Now that all 3 are done;

Microsoft: Not so interested in the games, but the backwards compatibility thing sounds amazing. Absolute opposite of Sony's concept of re-releasing games (not that MS are innocent either), I really hope this sets a precedence for future systems.

Sony: Brilliant games. Really blown away by pretty much everything on show except COD. No hardware announcements or firmware features, that bit was a let down. No bluray remote support? Couldn't watch their show live on their own system.

Nintendo: Great presenting and had some more niche games. Wii U feels relegated to smaller download titles in the run up to the NX. Again no firmware mentions. Star Fox's flying sections look great but the vehicle switching looks way too disjointed.

Sony did announce their new PS4 media player. You can download it right now, it's supposed to bring the media center capabilities to the same level as PS3.

Did they announce that during their event or was it after? I don't remember seeing it during the presentation. Have downloaded it though and yeah, it does what the PS3 does! It's not built into the OS like it is on PS3 though, so you have to launch the app to browse folders.

The PS4 Media Player was actually before the E3 keynote. It sneaked out, no mention.

It's a difference in style really. Microsoft make a massive deal over software changes, to the point where I don't care, whereas Sony barely say a word about them.

Microsoft:
I don't find backwards compatibility to be a big thing at all. I never used it on my PS3, preferring to just hook up a PS2 when I wanted to play an older game. I then found their games to be entirely boring. Halo, Gears of War and Forza...sorry, but that's another round of tepid sequels. I really want Tomb Raider, but I'm willing to wait for the timed exclusivity to expire. Simply put, there was nothing in their conference that was new or exciting. Oh, and a new Elite controller that will cost $150. Ouch. They then blathered on about Cortana or something :/

Oh and the Fallout 4 Mods is coming to PS4 as well, so that isn't doing Xbone any favours.

Sony:
Massive game news, though not much for this year. Yes there are sequels/remakes (The Last Guardian, Shenmue, FF VII), but they're of games far more interesting than bloody Halo. Horizon and Firewatch look excellent, and despite the bad delivery No Mans Sky still holds significant interest. Sony had their boring bits - Infinity, COD and Battlefront. The latter is something I'll buy, but I don't think it holds up well at these type of events.

Nintendo:
Marking time until the NX arrives. They said they'll share more details at E3 2016, which would indicate a launch in 2017 to me. That really doesn't bode well for the next few years of Nintendo games as I can imagine some of the heavy hitters getting pushed to the NX from the Wii U (Zelda being a prime example).

Outside of the big 3, things I'm excited for:
- Fallout 4, obviously
- Kingdom Hearts 3
- Hitman reboot
- Deus Ex
- Star Ocean
- Project Setsuna

Many are calling this years' E3 the best in a while. I would agree. Games Galore!!!!

As a PS4 owner I'm really excited to have seen some promising games coming. The Last Guardian, Star Wars Battlefront, Metal Gear Solid 5, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, FIFA 16, Batman Arkham Knight (Coming next week and I'm pumped!!).

As a Wii U owner I was a little underwhelmed but I'm still excited about Yoshi's Wooly World and Mario Maker. I'm not a StarFox fan :( . I wish they would've announced a Wii U Metroid game rather than that stupid Metroid 3DS ball battle game but whatever. Been thinking about getting a 3DS XL but not sure if it's worth it if I have a PS4 and Wii U.

Microsoft actually made me want a XB1. Halo 5, Gear of War 4, ReCore, and Tomb Raider all look sick.

My biggest issue now is that I can't justify buying everything. Can't get a XB1 or 3DS cause then I'd play too much video games, and I only buy like 10-15 games a year (all systems together, indies not included).

I missed Nintendo announcement. I assume that means I missed hearing all the exciting wii u games this year

Pilotwings ?
F-Zero ?
Animal Crossing ?
Luigi Mansion ?
Fire Emblem ?
Pokemon ?
Mario Sunshine ?
New Metroid Prime ?
Kid Icarus U ?

;) can't wait for all these IP's to come to my wii u

Oh well - thank god for the 3DS

--- just caught the skylanders announcment. Oh great all I need is more reason to spend hundreds of euro in another new collection. Seriously I'm over run by Skylanders, now amibo meets skylanders ? That's like mixing heroine & cocaine !!! :)

Xenoblade looks great, thank god it's this year. But seriously star fox looks awful. The god awful namco GameCube version looked better and that's not a compliment.... I would happily have settled for Starfox Adventures HD Remake than that awful looking thing.

Shenmue 3= Shocked me the most! (out of the whole event)
-On a side note, I am kind of surprised this was a Sony game given that Shenmue 2 was on Xbox?

Technically, Shenmue 2 was a Dreamcast game that former Sega of America chief Peter Moore brought to the Xbox because he was angling for a job at Microsoft. The game was already out for the Dreamcast in Europe and Japan at the time. That decision ticked off the fans because they didn't want to buy a new console just to play Shenmue 2. Most of them just imported it, especially since the EU version had English subtitles. Even Gamestop, if you can believe it, offered import copies for sale in North America that were bundled with a boot disc that would allow the game to run on an NTSC Dreamcast. Personally, I did buy an Xbox back in the day primarily for Shenmue 2 because I didn't own a Dreamcast at the time, having borrowed a friend's console to play the original.

As I said before, there's no way Shenmue 3 would come out on a Microsoft console, I would primarily say since the Xbox in all iterations has been a non-starter in Japan. The Wii U would have been an interesting choice because you could have integrated features into the gamepad, a la the Dreamcast's VMU. Given Sega's other contractual obligations to Nintendo, if the Wii U were selling at the pace of its immediate predecessor, I think we could very well have seen not only Shenmue 3, but also the long-rumored HD re-releases of the first two games.

Naturally, by process of elimination (and disregarding the PC at the moment), that leaves Sony as the only viable hardware/software partner to take on this project. A while back, Sony was asking fans what franchises they most wanted to see revived today, and Shenmue was at or near the top of the list. Now, it's unclear what role Sony is playing in this besides offering the game for digital download on the PS4. I have to believe they're going to wait and see the outcome of the Kickstarter campaign before committing large amounts of financial, marketing, and other resources.

I also have to think Sega is watching this as well, and if the Kickstarter is as wildly successful as I hope, they will give the green light on the aforementioned Shenmue 1 and 2 remake.

if you get a Harmony remote (with the hub) you can have a remote for your PS4

I kind of knew some of that (definitely not in that much detail).

good to know, thanks for the explanation

I just watched the Minecraft thing again, and aside from that annoying bitch's unbearable voice, that was really a fantastic presentation.

What do we actually know about Hololens? Is it standalone, or an accessory for pc or XBO? When does it hit the market, and at what price level?

Minecraft VR could be even more intriguing. Unfortunately, the chances of supporting Morpheus are rather slim...

I read that Hololens will be a stand alone thing that will be compatible with the X1 and Windows 10.

I honestly can say only thing I'm excited for on the Xbox side is I'll be able to play Alan Wake again because my 360 burned out and the OS change. The controller is nice but not at that price.

More dark souls is always good to me.

Bless

You must mean your Nintendo NX...

That just strikes me as too fast, unless Nintendo have been dicks all along and have been working on the NX for years already. Christmas 2016 would be a good time to launch in terms of sales, but I simply wonder if the hardware (and hence production) is ready that quickly.

Oh, totally forgot. That Star Wars game of course! A dream come true..

..basically ignoring the fact it's EA and I pretty much abandoned Origin 100%. That'll be (hopefully) as amazing as the multiplayer footage suggested. I don't mind if it is Battlefieldish though, never been a fan of military shooters but Star Wars...

you guys probably saw that already but it's hilarious, especially the guy behind camera (sadly the actual gameplay demo did literally nothin for me :()

If your TV supports smart link you could just use your TVs remote control too
It does! But what I love about the PS3 as a media centre is the whole system wakes up when I press any button on its BR remote, and then it all switches off when the TV goes off. That's the kind of ease I want from the PS4 (plus the PS3 boots a bit faster!). I really really want to box up my PS3 and free up a HDMI slot!

As for all the Nintendo stuff, it's disappointing for E3 but they also hold 3-4 Direct shows a year and they also do a lot at TGS. I mean yeah there aren't many big games coming to the Wii U barring Mario Maker and Xenoblade! I expect Smash Bros and Mario Kart will be supported for a while longer too.

I didn't hear anything until someone mentioned it on Twitter. I'd like a quick run through of what's coming up, OS-wise. Less fanfare than what MS gave them but enough that we know about them!

I thought Microsoft did a better job than Sony this year with backwards compatibility and more exclusive announcements.

I don't understand why people are so hung up on backwards compatibility.
Xbox360 has Xbox backwards compatibility and it was a disaster.

If you look at their launch titles, there isn't a single AA or AAA game on the list. AA or AAA studios have zero incentive to enable backwards compatibility. Actually they have a negative incentive to do that. Unless Microsoft is prepared to throw a ton of cash at AA and AAA studios its not going to happen outside of Microsoft owned property.

That is why we didn't see a single AA or AAA during the presentation.

The idea that RockStar is going to let someone play their 360 version of GTA5 on their One is delusional.

From what I can tell this is a universal emulator. Think of it like the PS Vita and PSP b/c. Games were released in waves as they were tested and approved. If it really is a universal emulator then the developers don't have to do anything, it's all down to Microsoft. So I reckon we'll see a much higher percentage of compatible games.

BC is big for other people because it means freeing up a HDMI slot, a power socket, space, one less device to maintain. In the case of Vita and 3DS it means playing games upscaled and smoother gameplay due to newer hardware. It can mean shorter loading times, ability to use newer/more ergonomic controllers. It is only a good thing.

Assuming emulation performs adequately, it's a way better solution than Sony's total ripoff and high latency streaming solution for backwards compatibility.
