Early 2009 Mac Mini - 1x8GB SODIMM?

I cannot find the answer to this anywhere so would appreciate some help.

I have an early 2009 Mac Mini (2.0GHz Core2Duo). I also happen to have an 8GB SODIMM (single SODIMM, 1x8GB not 2x4GB). Now I know the early 2009 models can address up to 8GB of RAM but will they work with a single 8GB DIMM in one slot (while leaving the 2nd slot empty)?

I only have a late 2009 and 2 x 8GB 1333Mhz doesn't work.
8GB in upper slot only - doesn't work
8GB in lower slow only - doesn't work

I could only use 2 x 4GB 1333Mhz
