Apparently I've been defying the laws of ... reality or something as I've used my 6 Plus, 6S Plus, and 7 without a case, without drops, and without damage.

Impossible apparently!

So have I, but I'm not risking it anymore. I'm scared I've jinxed it! My sister was the same, and a week after she said that, she smashed her iPhone 6!

Will the iPhone 6 design finally be retired for something new? Surely Apple have to do something different for 2018. Perhaps healthy iPhone X sales will ensure that they opt for "all screen" designs across the board next year.

The iPhone 8 Plus 'surfboard' design looks especially horribly dated.

My guess is iPhone X and X-plus next year. Assuming Apple can get enough OLED screens, that is.

I didn’t say my assessment was true, it’s just « feels » and pop psychology and that guy could just be a rich loser bonehead, every option is possible when doing those snap assessments.
;-)

I actually don’ Know what possesses people to register on an apple forum and say these kind of things; it is a mystery.
I rarely seen these kind of things in neutral or android oriented forums. Somehow Apple makes these people angry.

My comments may not always Be stellar but îm at least in the right place to make them. What’s that guy’s excuse?

I understand. I think most people on this board are Apple users. The old school ones like me (joined many, many, years ago) got on this board as Mac users. Some of these people can be a little bitter. And yes, some just make absurd comments that can be infuriating. But I see that as going both ways. Back when the iPhone 4 came out, my first day with it (I got it on release day) was a frustrating mess. It would drop every call I made. You would be talking and at some point realize there was silence on the other end. I log onto this board and there is a huge thread about this problem and so many people were saying there was no problem, and the people reporting it were idiots. Pretty frustrating when you experienced it first hand.

I think that kind of frustration is similar to you or others actually owning the iPhone 8, liking it, then having others post how bad/boring/overpriced, etc it is. You feel like, wait a minute, I have it in my hands, it's really good, what are these people talking about.

Return of the glass back is the best part. The iPhone 4 was an incredible design, and I definitely think this will hold up better than the previous design. Might make some of that case anxiety go away - I'd probably be brave enough to go naked from day 1. Something about the aluminium back always felt very fragile, as well as slippery! Don't think I'd feel that with a glass back. It's a shame they kept the edges aluminium (which is soft and will crumple/dent on impact), they could have given them the same brushed steel that the iPhone 4 had - which held up really well if I remember correctly.

Hopefully the glass back is something that sticks around for some years to come! Which it should if Apple want to keep wireless charging as a feature.

I wonder if this means we'll see the return of iPhone 4-style bumper cases, as people don't feel the need to protect the back so much!
Have you seen the drop tests? It seems the glass back is quite fragile. Not a particular concern for me since I always use a case, but folks that go naked are taking a BIG risk. Definitely more fragile overall than the 7. I too wish they had used stainless steel for the band but I guess that would make it too similar to the X. Still unsure if I will upgrade this time or not..

That's not true at all. All drop tests I've seen have put the 8 under unreasonable strain to cause breakage, because their goal is to break it. It's also been proven to be almost impossible to bend - making your statement completely false. Glass IS more durable than the tin can thickness aluminium backing of the previous iPhones, but it will shatter if you try hard enough. My guess would be that it'll survive about 99% of regular drops that occur from ordinary use. Only in extreme cases will it shatter entirely. Whilst Apple have not claimed to have engineered indestructible glass, the iPhone 8 is definitely built better than the 7.

YouTubers are out for the clicks. Shattered iPhones get clicks. Going with the agenda that the iPhone 8 is weaker because it's made of glass gets clicks. They're not a great source for real world facts. One YouTuber I saw - EverythingApplePro - did everything he could to get the iPhone 8 to break. When it inevitably did, he'd say, "Well, that wasn't as strong as I thought it would be." Having literally gone to great lengths to cause massive damage. It's Fake News.

I like the glass back.

But, when you look at the 8 from the front next to the X or the Galaxy the iPhone 8 looks dated.
The X is not bad looking except for the notch. The Galaxy is just plain ugly. If that is what a "modern" phone is to look like, then I'll take dated any day. The curved edge glass was a bad idea when it first came out and it is still a bad idea.

HAHA dream on. Do you remember all the 4 and 4s phones with broken backs back in the day? I'm not talking about the goofy "try to break it at any cost" tests or the moronic "bend" tests. Yes those are click bait. Search around some and you will see some legitimate tests using actual drop testing machines. The 8 does appear more bend resistant but that is a non issue as far as I am concerned. Phone damage is usually caused by dropping of course and the 8 will be more likely to suffer damage that will render it unsafe or at least unpleasant to use. If you drop a 7 (or 6s or 6, etc) and the back gets damaged, the damage will be unsightly but not likely cause any usability problems. A broken glass back on an 8 is more likely to cause problems especially if it starts flaking off. Don't get me wrong, the 8 is a really pretty design. Just put a case on it! :) Also for the record, I am no iPhone hater or anything. I've had every primary regular size model since the 4s. Wife has had 3 iPhones, daughter has had 2, we have 3 iPads, iMac, MacbookPro etc. Definitely an Apple household for sure.

The glass does fine for drops of any reasonable distance. When it comes to bending and scratching, however, it's significantly more resilient than the 7/7 Plus.

So, with the new era of phones, it still survives reasonable drops without damage and gets huge upgrades to surviving bends and scratches.

I can definitely see where the gaps are. I wish they had done a better job at build quality.

I went to the Apple Store to check out the iPhone 8 Plus. Looking at the glass back where it meets the frame, it wasn't the quality I was expecting from Apple's previous products. There were some tiny gaps. Some seemed larger than the others. It felt like Samsung Galaxy S6 all over when they switched to glass back (a little better than that, but still), they too had that problem sandwiching glass and aluminum together. On Galaxy S7 they fixed that.

I was in an Apple store today too over issues with my 7 Plus. I thought the glass looked very strange. It didn't seem to fit together very well.
