The back of the iPhone 8, 8+ kind of reminds me the iPhone 4, 4s aesthetics which feels premium and reflects the Steve Jobs good design (ignoring the hump from the camera). And I don't understand why people are complaining about the glass from cracking, like it was the first time Apple did that...

You know, Porsche does modernize its 911, while keeping the shape cues almost everyone recognizes and loves.

If you look at the last 4 major versions - the 993, 996, 996 and 991, it's obvious that design changes. This is not so obvious at all between the iPhone 6 to the 8, they basically look alike. Even minor Porsche revisions like 991.1 vs 991.2 have more changes (particularly inside the car) than say, the iPhone 6S vs the 7.

Apple has been running too long with this design and the problem with the iPhone 8 is that is looks really dated. It's back to bezel-land one more time. The design wasn't that nice to begin with, and now it's just cringe-inducing at that price.

But you get cookie points (Tim Cook doesn't award brownie points) for comparing a Chinese-made, run-of-the-mill consumer item with an iconic luxury sports car that only very few people can afford.

But does Porsche radically change the design of their vehicles every 3 years?

Well, talk about a biased article title...
Early adopters are always heavy fans, so yeah... what do they gonna say: what a bad phone...?

Macrumors really have to be less biased towards apple. Yes, it's an apple website, but that doesnt mean everything is perfect what apple delivers. Some criticism wouldn't be bad.
Same for the iphone X

Or people can buy whatever they want.
They cant always...

If you NEED iOS for some reason, you are locked to the phone they release in the future...
That's why a lot of people want good hardware too

No, since developing a car is on a whole other level than designing a phone...

You know what looks a heck of a lot more dated than the design? That grid of icons which hasn't changed one bit in ten years. A complete overhaul of the UI to a more modern variant would do a lot more to give iPhone a fresh new look and visual aesthetic.
While I don’t disagree, the row of 4 icons serves its purpose and leaves no doubt about the brand of phone. It’s an iconic look

Upgrade from SE to 8 plus
Feels so large and is afraid that it will always slip from my hands
No more one hand use

They are quietly expanding the portfolio that's why they are doing it. Majority still think Apple sells only one phone while the truth is they have portfolio of 8 phones now currently on sale, that's only one less than whole Xperia range. From 6s to 8+ there is only $50 difference from each model up, you basically get the same phone but with beefier internals and different color and material options.

It's quite a clever strategy from their side and it goes like this; You want a good phone? Go with 6s. You want a cheap compact phone? Go with SE. You want to show off with your phone? Go with X. You want a good camera? You have to go at least with iP7. You want even better camera with some gimmick tricks to make you feel like a photographer? You need to go with iP7+. You want wireless charging? You have to go with 8. You want that Jet Black finish? Have to go with 7. And so on.

Apple knows their customers better than they know themselves. To me the phone with least amount of compromises value included in that assessment is SE. To me 6s/7/8 are ergonomic nightmares, too thin to hold properly, too slippery, too prone to damages and they all look like Android phones unlike iconic 4/5/SE dseign

I'm not sure why more people aren't seeing this. Apple has slowly expanded their lineup of phones and are really now competing in the middle and higher end. They should no longer be looked at as high end only. With the release of the X, I think they will really diversify the line.

"I got my iPhone 8 Plus this morning and I am moving from an iPhone 7 Plus," said MacRumors forum member earthdog. "Honestly, I am already struggling to find a good reason to keep it. The differences are so slight. I am going to use it over the weekend to see if I can justify the move. I really want to love it, but right now I just am not impressed.”

So, first he got the phone, and after the purchase he seeks a reason for the upgrade ? Brilliant.

I’m enjoying my iPhone 8+ I picked up today. Love the glass back and general feel coming from a 6s. I have noticed the top gets quite warm after I take a couple of pictures. Anyone else find this or is everyone hell bent on X?

I am so over this 4 year old design.

Agreed. Apple keeps rehashing the same design. They didn't have to go bezeless with the 8. But a little trim would have been nice. And maybe even a home button redesign.

The problem is the 8 is a tested and tried formula which results in a nice iterative upgrade. The X is the one that feels exciting and new but that cost!

I’ve been enjoying the same grippyness on my 7+ Jet Black for the past year. Glad all the colors have it now I guess. This was the reason I got the JB color.

Said it before....... it’s just a phone.

Don’t buy the 8/plus if you don’t want to, buy if you do. Return it if you don’t like it, keep it if you do. If people like it ( or not) leave em be.

Buy the x if you want, or don’t. It’s just a phone. I won’t be listening to fan boys nor naysayers either way.

Nope. I think the people who will be waiting months for X might have regret-gate.

Or perhaps they don't want to buy another 4 year old design iPhone and they think it may be worth the wait. I am one of them.

So how would you re-design it?

It have already been re-designed. It's called iPhone X. This 8 version is just a non sense in my opinion.

The first 3 iPhones 2007/2008/2009 were the same design.

2010/2011/2012/2013 practically the same design actually. Just the 5/5s stretched.

They were no where as similar as the last 4 versions. I mean not even close. We are talking about identical design (minus antenna bands and glass back)

Wonder if we'll see the return of 'bumpers' - but maybe TPU this time so the phone doesn't end up scuffed to heck?

Also has it had the grip test yet?

It does. I'm using mine right now & the added weight makes it feel ~ packed. I dunno how to verbalize it.

glad you're enjoying your new toy and like how its feel, but the extra weight makes it feel heavy, spacial when you coming from lighter phones (like SE) you feel the difference...

People who overspend on an item generally will find nothing wrong with it; see Apple device buyers across the board. Must justify outrageous expense for personal sanity soothing.

The -gate for this phone will be regret-gate in a month.

Well it has to be something-gate right? Can't have an Apple release without something for the haters!

I mean, there are still people quoting Jobs' infamous "Don't hold it that way" statement. Or should I say, misquoting it as, "You're holding it wrong". Yet we aren't even a year past Note 7's burning up people's pockets and being banned on airplanes but nobody seems to give a crap anymore.

You keep referring to 4 versions and 4 years. It's been 4 versions and 3 years since iPhone 6.

Us Apple users must not be complacent to whatever Apple puts out. Otherwise we are always bending over and getting minimal upgrades. Vote w/ your wallet.... Have an open mind and call a spade a spade when one sees it. Avoid the brand loyalty by always siding the company as if they did not wrong.

This is so unrealistic. People are invested in an ecosystem, switching for a feature or two means losing any paid app functionality without repurchasing. Could even mean gutting IoT devices from your home. I'd be going from CarPlay to Bluetooth audio. The wrench an Android phone would throw into my modern life would be a lot bigger than my open mind could handle.
