Uhhh... I can't think of a single reason why Apple's implementation of multitasking won't work perfectly for 99.9% of people. It does background music, GPS, etc. I mean, I am not trying to render a 3D model on my device here. Plus, app switching will be incredibly fast on a 3GS, iPad, and new devices.

I just don't understand your complaint AT ALL. The "true multitasking" arguments that many people have just don't use any consumer-based logic. They are 100% geek and technical arguments that don't matter to real-world people.

I think it is still unclear what exactly Apples multitasking means for existing apps. My previous example was getting a phone call in the middle of playing GTA:CW. If you haven't saved, you just lost all your progress because the app quits. Now the question is do apps have to have the fast switching programmed into them or is it taken care of by the OS? That could be what some people are worried about. As it is I was under the impression that all the apps were supposed to save state, but obviously, I am wrong.

Am I the first to see this ?!?

Anybody see this ?!? On item in the new API caught my attention..

AVCaptureDevicePositionRear
AVCaptureDevicePositionFront !!!
AVCaptureFlashModeOff
AVCaptureFlashModeOn
AVCaptureFlashModeAuto
AVCaptureTorchModeOff
AVCaptureTorchModeOn
AVCaptureTorchModeAuto

nicee.....! :)

Not sure what this means, but your enthusiasm interests me. Explain

Empty space is beautiful. Typographers and designers call it "whitespace", where there is nothing. There needs to be a balance. It's very Zen-like.

This is the problem with a lot of websites. Everything crammed together. Nowhere to rest the eyes.

I agree. Sometimes simplicity is good. Let's all chill and appreciate all the OS update goodness that we are about to receive.

these are states you can use in your code..

but basicly it means the new OS supports a frontFacing Camera device.. and a flash .. and a torch.. wich will supposably be a led-flash/torch.

It indecates that a front facing camera will be on an iPhone OS product. (iPhone 4th generation, iPod touch 2nd generation, or iPad 2nd generation) It also indecates an LED camera flash (not adobe flash( will be on an iPhone Os device. I'm guessing a flash and front facing camera will be on the next iPhone suppsdly the iPhone HD

Apple has also integrated Grand Central Dispatch into the iPhone OS -- a technology introduced with Snow Leopard to ease the use of multi-core processors. The current iPhone currently only has single core processors, though there have been long-standing rumors that Apple might use the multi-core Cortex A9 in the future.

IIRC, Grand Central Dispatch is useful, not only for multi-core processing, but for client-server and remote "cloud" computing services. Could be very interesting if Apple heads in this direction. Any time your phone or iPad needs to crunch on something really big (fancy image filter say) for more than a few seconds, it might be faster to send parts of the job off to your Mac, or even to Apple's big farm in NC.

imho

Did Anyone Notice?

I was happy to see OS 4 in action. I think it's a great improvement on the current one. Can't wait to use it.

I know this is immature but did anyone notice the B/W topless pic in the photos section?

It made me laugh.

Holy hell. That is an incredibly non-intuitive way to implement app switching and folder creation.

The average person is going to have no idea pressing the home button twice will show open applications. Nor will they realize they can drag one icon on top of the other to make a folder... if they even figure out that pressing and holding an icon will make it moveable in the first place.

The more features that get added to this OS, the less usable it's becoming. My friend had no idea, for instance, that if he held down his finger he would get a magnifying glass and the ability to reposition his cursor... not to mention cut and paste.

Multitouch is nice, but secret gestures are not user-friendly. Where is that vaunted Apple UI design?

If people don't watch the videos and take the time to learn their iPhone's in's and out's, chances are they can live without the features anyways.

The multitasking shown in the videos is going to be more for more intuitive users, I'm pretty sure the only reason why they put that in is for the fanboys. Most people can live without multitasking, on their fricken PHONES.

No one needed 512Mb harddrives in their computer either.

Don't you think it's pathetic it took all the way to 2010 to offer a flash for a camera, when even the most basic of "smart phones" have been doing it for over a decade now?

I would disagree.
What's pathetic is the performance of most smartphone flashes.
Actually make that most compact camera flashes as well.
I would call them redeye inducing and harsh shadow making devices.
The point is you are only getting a very limited additional functionality,
that in many cases can make a worse picture than just using available light.

All apps have the "ability" to save state.
Developers have to actually "add" it to thier app.

That's because the "average user" doesn't need to do either of these. They have less that a half dozen pages of apps total, and use probably less than a dozen apps regularly anyway. If Pandora is frozen in the background and not playing anything, or using any significant CPU or memory, they won't even care that it's "open".

That's the magic of Apple's method.

Ok then, tell me what kind of smart phone you were using on 1999? The answer is none. And it didn't have a freaking flash if they existed. Because the Apple digital camera had just came out, less than a megapixel. The palm pilot had just come out. Sported 256k of memory I think and a wonderfully black and grey display. It certainly didn't have a camera and it sure didn't have a flash. There weren't any blackberrys, oh yes there were, they were only a texting device. No phone. No camera. The phone I had- wait hardly anyone had a phone because they were huge and you got 100 minutes/mo for around $50 if you were lucky. Most of us had pagers and you stopped and used a pay phone if you had and emergency. What grade were you in?

that's the beauty. They don't have to know. Those are all features for the power user. All available if you do any of the basic tutorials spoon fed to you when you get a phone. Perhaps a little video pre installed would be a good idea though. Nobody needs to know how to switch between open apps. It just works. Nobody needs to know how to rearrange the icons. They don't need to know about folders. And Id argue that the magnifying glass pops ip all day long by accident, as do the wiggling icons.

I just watched the Keynote and I am so screw#d. I want it for my phone so much, but I live permanently in a local roaming zone and the data usage is prohibitive. I'm worried that If I get OS4 I'll never be able to afford to turn on my phone again lest it connect automatically to the data-network. I have a year and a half of my contract left! I want to be able to turn my data-network access off while my cellular and wi-fi remain on, this would be the perfect solution. I spoke with my provider abut just turning off the data-network without changing the terms of the contract, they eventually agreed and said they did it but physically nothing changed.

Can't you turn off data roaming in the settings? I thought that's what it was for? Been there for 2 years now.

Wow That's Amazing...except...

....I already have the best multitalking UI Multiflow on my jailbroken iPhone. It's a copy of palm's brilliant and intuitive way of multitasking. A double tap give the page and I can swipe along and then tap on the app I wanna open. But seriously Steve well done for being so leading edge. I also already have my own/video background, own ringtones that I didn't have to pay for,mi-fi,free tethering and I change carriers when I travel to another country, by popping someone else's sim and save a fortune. And whilst I'm on holiday, I can take 7meg pics,Night shots and videos all on my 2yr old 3g!!! And all after replacing the pathetic 1100mah battery with 1800mah one...

WAKE UP FANBOYS, OR iSHEEP AS I LIKE TO CALL YOU, JOBS JUST DRIP FEEDS YOU TECH THAT SHOULD BE ON ALL IPHONES YEARS AFTER IT WAS COMMON PLACE. DO THE MATH...
FANTASTIC IPHONE HARDWAREX(OPEN SOURCE APPROACH)+(ITUNES APP STORE AND CYDIA APP STORE APPS)XFULLY PERSONALISED & CUSTOMISED PHONE=UNBEATABLE!!!

Has anyone seen the new sms changes and incorrect spelling - red underlined and replace word when selected incorrect word, followed by some alternative options?
