Quick video of 21" tear down. There is no way I would want to attempt to replace the ram myself after watching this, but it is possible after breaking the glue ...

http://blog.macsales.com/15932-what-does-it-take-to-upgrade-a-2012-imac-21-5

Got a question for you. Or if not you, anyone who reads this and knows the answer.

Say I were to get a 27" iMac, and I want to upgrade the storage from, say, an HDD to an SSD at some point in the future. Do I have to sell my iMac and buy an entirely new machine, or can I take it to a certified Apple repair shop, and get them to swap one out for me without voiding my warranty? Can I provide my own drive, or do I have to buy one directly from Apple?

The VAT isn't Apple's fault...

But I think even when taking that into account there is still some foreign market markup going on...

Buffer for a variable exchange rate. Sometimes apple loses, sometimes apple wins. They are usually on the winning side though.

That is the entire premise of windows 8, touch for the sake of itself.

Indeed. It's all about Microsoft's self-gratification… or to put it another way, Microsoft wanting desperately to report some tablet sales. If they have to do it by shoehorning a desktop operating system in there too, so be it—usability be damned!

Who cares how it looks? I doubt anyone has been laid because they had a sleek and stylish computer.

...then again, I've never been to many 'cons. Maybe I'm not hanging out in the right circles. And admittedly, if there were one computer that would get you some action...

Uh, what are you talking about? Who cares about what things look like?

Let me tell something. Apple cares about what the INSIDES look like. They care about the looks of things no one will ever see. Actually, the REALLY, REALLY care about what things look like.

We ALL really care what are stuff looks like.

It's not about getting laid or showing off.

Design is important and I do want something that is aesthetically pleasing. Like clothes, jewelry, cars, watches, speakers, stereos.........you can get items that meet the minimum requirements or you can aim a little higher. If a computer is nothing more to you than a tool to get stuff done, then fine. I prefer my toys not to look like Dells or Alienware boxes.

Apologize in advance if this has been beaten to death already, but:

Is the 680MX a stronger GPU than the 680M? What exactly is the X? Is it short for eXtreme!!!! or is it code for "gimped"?

It's a stronger card. Unfortunately, I can't find any benchmarks for. It. I'd like to see exactly how it compares to the desktop 680 myself.

The X stands for "better".

Edit:just compared it to the desktop 680 specs. It literally is the same GPU downclocked. Now I'd like to know how much of a difference it makes.

An apple Authorized repair shop can do the drive replacement for you, and still keep your warranty intact.

Surely that price can't be right! The same system costs 2.649,00 euros ($3.444,79) in Germany...

I'm afraid it can be right.
The price in US$ is tax-free, and Apple always had a thing for screwing non-Americans.

The rates on the US websites are not inclusive of taxes... Whereas the European websites are inclusive of all taxes... And AFAIK European taxes are generally a lot higher...

Don't count on it, the top end games like BF3 is going to struggle at max on that 2560x1440 display. Even the MX.

The MX will be about 10-15% faster than the regular well benchmarked 680M in BF3 at 1080p you're looking at a 33FPS average, so if we're being generous and we see a 15% increase in FPS it's about 38FPS on 1080p. Pushing about 25% more pixels than 1080p you're looking at about 20-25FPS.

Turn down some settings and it might reach 60 but it's not going to be near max, I'd say medium at best, and I'm not too sure about the CPU as it's a fairly CPU taxing game.

I bet the MX options also going to cost a fortune, and here's the best part, in 1.5-2.0 years when games are pushing hardware forward you've got no upgrade avenue besides to turn down settings and down.

Not trying to be a dick but if you're even semi serious about gaming on a PC you might as well just build your own and get a cheaper iMac, by the time you pay for all the upgrades it's probably going to be a cheaper option than souping up an iMac that isn't going to be able to cut the mustard now and into the future.

Bu... bu... but it's thin!

Well, all the port locations are retarded. Most screens are against a wall. I'm constantly spinning mine around to plug in USB or FireWire. But I have things permanently plugged to tb, so it's pulling on those cables every time. Stupid.

The GPU on the high end 27" is pretty damn close to one. You'll easily be able to run just about any game at native resolution with all the settings bumped up about as high as they'll go.

The poster said "design level" graphics card, not a gaming card. A good gaming card is not a good choice for running Maya or Vue. And a card that makes for good productivity with Maya or Vue (often) sucks for gaming.

Really...Why say u? As a Vue user, I would have thought the opposite (but I am not a gamer).

Or this...

...which is the second time I've posted this picture today, in response to the same tired argument.

Most people griping about monkey arms or whatever are only doing so because Steve Jobs said something back in the day, and now they're regurgitating it nonstop in an attempt to look smart.

You know, he was right...when it comes to vertically standing monitors. But for screens you can slide right in front of you and tilt back? There's no reason not to have them touch enabled. They'll be as comfortable to use as an iPad.

I saw someone study that, and he said that you can actually get you neck tired after long periods of time. There is a reasons why monitors are vertical.

maybe it's just me, but it doesn't seem too ergonomic to have a touchscreen for a desktop. a tablet.. yes.. but desktop my arms would have to keep hovering in the air frequently to do tasks if i were to really forego the traditional keyboard/mouse

A lot of tech bloggers and journalists have no clue what they're talking about. I like the Verge, but they sometimes say some really dumb things, like what you just pointed out.

I can't wait to get one of these monsters. I'm glad we can install the RAM for the 27-inch. I'm going to OWC for that.

OWC 32 GB = $195
Apple 32 GB = $600

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2012_27/DDR3L

Better still I got an upgrade to 16Gb for $0 just by asking, all I had to do was get Apple Care now and not wait 11 months.

For most 16Gb will be more than enough for the next 3-4 years or longer.
