In 3 of the 4 written reviews (can't watch the video on my iPhone) the big winner was... Scrabble?

Does anyone else think this is just wave 1? It seems like everyone is forgetting the 3G version coming out later this month. All of this hype for the wi-fi version, which sorta ties you down. With the 3G and the GPS,(lets not forget the apps that will go along with that model) to me I think it will open up this thing even more. I wonder how many people are waiting for the 3G one. And all of this hype is only over the wi-fi for now..... Exciting

Who cares? Their units have replaceable batteries, right? That makes those units far better according to many people here.

:p

I never understood this design request. Who wants to carry extra batteries, stop and reboot, etc. I have a Nextel at work and don't carry a pocket of batteries around. Why would an iphone, or iPad user want to. I mean really. the fact they battery is built in probably doesn't matter to 98% of the users.

I'm glad of two things:

-Reviewers now recognize the fact that this tablet is the "tweener" we've all been waiting for, not an oversized iPod touch, not a PC/Mac replacement. It does what it needs to do, and every well at that. (Except for some form of rudimentary multitasking, I will admit that it is a missing feature, but hopefully should be here by 4.0.)

-The iPad is getting a universally great first impression.

For what it is worth, the second I order my 32GB 3G iPad, my iPod touch is gonna leave. It's the product I've been waiting for, and the iPod touch while good, isn't what I need anymore. iPod Classic + iPad + iMac + flip phone = :)

Absolutely. If the iPod was the tool of the last decade, think about how the very first iPod compared to the iPod touch nine years later.

Now think what the iPad will be like in 2019 and we can have chills of anticipation.

You are new to this site. It is very popular with complainers and people who think Apple can suspend the laws of physics or the economics of consumer electronics manufacturing.

Many of these people continuously whine about almost everything Apple does and even more about things Apple doesn't do. My guess is that many of them have deep-seated issues in self-confidence and their own personal worth. Perhaps it's a not-so-muted plea for attention

And I think a few of them are simply bitter that they didn't buy AAPL in early 2005 when it was $44/share.

:p

I've come to expect it here, I was first reading this article on some other website that had Walt also doing an 8 minute video, and it seemed every review of his article/ipad was negative.

No big surprises from these three. NYT, damned with faint praise. Uncle Walt, typical review, USA Today, same.

What their readers are going to take away is that the iPad is for consumption, not for creation, great battery life, brilliant screen, promising content in the works, and every single kid is going to want one for Christmas.

What will be the game changer is the App store.

In addition to people who genuinely don't like the design of the iPad for whatever reason, there are also contrarian types who love to criticize, trolls who love to cause trouble, people emotionally invested in other options and driven to run down anything Apple does, folks paid (in various ways) by Microsoft to say bad things about anything Apple does.

I usually care less about what these "pros" have to say, but I have the same vision as Mossberg with the iPad being the game changer for UIs.

I'll be confirming this for myself when my iPad arrives.

Verifies what I thought - not a serious content creation device. Basically a big iPod Touch with a few extra bells and whistles.

If you want something on the go bigger than your cell phone then it could work. If you want something portable to create serious documents, etc with then you'll want a regular laptop or even a more capable netbook.

What's a "serious document"?

or the 1st iMac vs. today's, or the 1st iPhone, vs. todays (and the upcoming one)
This thing IS really going to go over big, and I predict a lot of "I told you so". I can't believe people will think it will flop. Does anyone know how many Newtons were sold over its entire run?

I guess I better lock in my 3G so I can get in to the first group of them being shipped. I think once this is out, more demand will hit, people will regret not getting the 3G, ( or simply pass the 1st on and buy another) and Apple will have to do the same as the 1st wave, and have a shipping delay for the "non 1st reservers" of the 3G. And if next years comes out with a camera, this 1st one will still be usable, just gift it to a family member. Or do the world a favor and convert someone with it. Ha.

What's a "serious document"?
This has been covered in several of the reviews, so please go back and reread them.

It means things like really big spreadsheets or, at least to a writer, a long article.

The exact words "serious document" might not be in the reviews, but if you have high-school level English, your reading comprehension skills should be sufficient to identify the key points and examples.

Precisely, an app may cause this thing to show up in a hospital, job site, etc. It's not just about iPhoto, eBooks (I have yet to EVER see anyone reading a Kindle, but this is obviously a big deal for somebody) and watching movies. Just wait and see. Not too many are focusing on this part which will be the big part of the picture that is missing right now.
