I think this has to be isolated to certain units, mine has been rock solid on several different Wifi Connections and I've had no issue with Charging, but I know some who've had.

God. Yet another oblivious fool! "Mine works fine, so it must be a fluke!"

I guess YOUR intact iMac 27" w/ no cracked screens means there's no REAL problem. Or yellow tint to the screen.

Care to step into the world of reality?

I love the Haters, we have a few at work, that think just because they don't have a use for one then no one else does. Hey no one's forcing you to buy it, but If I have to hear you run me down one more time for buying an Ipad....

Are you QUITE down deflecting???? Care to take a crack at the ISSUE at hand? The issue is problems w/ Rev A. Not "this thing isn't useful".

I have drop connections on my ipod touch3g. connecting to my wifi. so with the ipad shouldnt be a problem.

It's envy. Pure, green envy.

And here's the kicker: before you know it, the haters will have one too.

Ah, our resident psycho sounding off. I guess your TYPICAL one-way street doesn't apply to NON-Apple products, eh?

I guess that means YOU will have a Droid phone soon. You fool (to put it nicely).

This one goes out to all you lovely consumers out there...

http://www.boingboing.net/2010/04/02/why-i-wont-buy-an-ipad-and-think-you-shouldnt-either.html

I particularly like this bit...
The model of interaction with the iPad is to be a "consumer," what William Gibson memorably described as "something the size of a baby hippo, the color of a week-old boiled potato, that lives by itself, in the dark, in a double-wide on the outskirts of Topeka. It's covered with eyes and it sweats constantly. The sweat runs into those eyes and makes them sting. It has no mouth... no genitals, and can only express its mute extremes of murderous rage and infantile desire by changing the channels on a universal remote."

Just reminds me of the pages and pages of fanboy apologists every time apple makes a dud.

Typical denial and tunnelvision.

Irony: opposite of expected outcome...

Funny, yes.

But not ironic...

(Rain on your wedding day, Alannis Morisette? Not irony...just bummer coincidence.... Sorry, pet peeve of mine.)

I love Apple to death, however their tendency to keep all details of a product secret until launch means that they have a very limited group of beta testers. Unfortunately, you Rev A people become the beata testers.

Ironically, yesterday I received a class-action settlement check of $37.50 for the scratching issue on my 1st-gen Nano that I picked up on day 1.

This is just one of the reasons why you never buy a Rev A product.

Good luck to all of those who just couldn't wait to get this big ipod touch. Hopefully yours are okay.

Really, you are still naive enough to call the iPad a big iPod touch? Do you know anything about the iPad or even seen a commercial? Spend 15 minutes with an iPad and you will understand. If so, you wouldn't make such foolish remarks.

For what it's worth, I've had no WiFi issues at all. WiFi works fast and reliably for me at all times. So it's not a universal problem, although I don't doubt that some users are having a problem. But it's important to note that there are others with no issues.

The USB charging thing is something I noticed. It doesn't charge while syncing, but it tells you that in the message bar. Then when it is done syncing, and it is in sleep mode, it charges just fine. So for overnight topping off, no problems. This is with my late 2006 MacBook Pro.

No wifi problems here. I use the iPad with my 27in iMac and it works ok. Think that iMac has a high power port.

There is definitely something wrong with the wifi signal. I am in my house at a location that should have a solid three bars, but it keeps fluctuating between 1-3. It's working fine, but something is up.

As for the battery charging, I have no problems since i have pretty recent macs and have also been using the power adapter at night.

It is quite a positive thing that several days after launch these are the only complaints that are surfacing - to call these points major is definitely overkill. No wifi problems here and who would think they could charge a tablet computer with a 9.7" screen via a USB port? Seriously...

Fanboi damage control better contain this quick....

This thing is supposed to be "magical" remember?

I use such a telephone company router at home with no problems most of the time. My IPod Touch and IPad work fine with it. But going to the local coffee shop, etc. I have problems. I don't think that asking them to change their router or settings would be appropriate. So I suspect it is a problem with my device. The IPad and Ipod Touch are designed to be used 'on the go' and should work with the standard wifi routers without change. After all, isn't wifi an international standard?
Problem with home routers is many people use the router that their DSL / Cable company supply (ie router with built in ADSL). Some of those are not the best quality, depending on company and brand the ISP provider chose to use.

I have even seen home routers with an internal antenna and ask why? router position in the home also means a lot. my router is on my desk (as I have my macbook and my work dell hard wired to it). My wife who is clear across our home (70 ft a way) using wifi on her mini, it can lose connection if I close my office door or sit directly in front of the router (where I have the router I cannot put the antenna fully up).

I need to get some longer cables and move my router, as I found that if I move it closer to the office door (or I am not sitting in front of it) and leave my office door open; she does not lose signal.

Also routers with two antennas or antennas you can extend like rabbit ears also work better.

Also, be aware of where your router is and the type of material in your home. My church building has cement cinder block walls (as most older churches), so wi fi is out of the question. also older homes that used more wood and plaster in the walls tend to cut back on the signal as well.

This is a digital signal which uses line of site. Much like how my over-the-air TV stations get better picture, but tend to lose signal if something gets in the way. Analog signal just bounces off everything, so it is not an issue.

Well, even my wives blackberry curve won't charge on a standard USB. It requires an extra USB plugged in to charge.

When i saw this I thought it was an actual problem.

And I'm sure the wifi could be boosted in a software update. If input down $500 on one I'd be pretty upset regarding wifi though

Not too bad

These don't seem like massive problems do they? There will always be initial teething problems! Biggest one here - I can even buy one yet! As for the charging issue isn't that why they are supplying a wall charger? Here in the uk with my iPhone I didn't get one!

I love the "do you connect your laptop to you desktop to charge it?" comments the most. So, when addressing its limitations, people say "no one ever said it's a computer". But, when talking about charging it, it's now a "computer". So, what exactly is it? And don't say "a totally new category". Tablets have been around for ages.

I've got a question to the new iPad owners out there... Maybe it's a complaint, maybe not...

64 GB is the highest storage amount you could have purchased. For those that purchased the lower storage of either 16 or 32 GB, (my question) are you wishing you had upgraded and purchased more storage? Especially after you synced with your computer and now have your photos (if any), tv shows (if any), movies (if any), music (if any) now stored on your iPad... or are you happy with the storage choice you made and have plenty of room left to spare?

And for those that bought a lower storage capable iPad and synced with their computer to have all their stuff carried over, what size iPad did you get and what kinds of stuff did you carry over and is now on your iPad and how much storage do you have left over?

Just curious... Thanks

No, I stuffed my pad full of apps, put some music and pics on, and still have 10 gig free. Besides, its not meant to be your media server.

iPad Wi-Fi issues

My brother-in-law got one and he thought the iPad wi-fi issue was an old wireless router. The snail-like pace brings up memories of the old dial-in access.

Fanboi damage control better contain this quick....

This thing is supposed to be "magical" remember?

oh, its pretty magical.. My wife doesn't give .02 about technology and she's the one that waited in line for it. My two little girls have been fighting over it since we got it. I have the wifi thing, but didn't think anything of it. I only have "G" too. Wireless isn't blazing fast, but not bad. Yeah, I've had to reconnect a time or two, but so what? I also noticed the charging thing and it seems to depend on a lot of factors. Even my top of the line BTO 27" got the "not charging" message, but not every time. So what? I let it go to sleep and it just takes longer to charge that way. If I want it fast I plug it into the wall. Not sure what all the hub-bub is. I bet if 300,000 people scrutinized all of our work outputs they'd find plenty to bitch about too.... I think it comes down to 3 types... the "OMG, it doesn't meet all my self validation criteria!" They will always complain. The fanbois will say its perfect even if it isn't, and the rest of us will say, this is a pretty cool gizmo. It can always be improved, but pretty sweet bang for the buck, and 1000x better than any other company that's tried to put a product in this space.... As usual for Apple!

As a previous poster pointed out, you wouldn't expect to charge your laptop or netbook from a USB port would you?

Not for a laptop, but considering the iPad is a big iPod touch and not a laptop, I do think it should charge. My iPad charges fine on my MacBook Pro but does not seem to charge on my Dell laptop. I guess it charges while in sleep mode, so I'm experimenting now to see how quickly.

I don't plan on taking it to work to often, but when I do I might have to schlep along a charger, though so far battery life is real good.

Well, how would YOU classify it?

It is not a phone.
It is not an e-reader.

Is there a strict definition of netbook? or laptop? or tablet?

Dictionary dot com, computer: an electronic device designed to accept data, perform prescribed mathematical and logical operations at high speed, and display the results of these operations.

By this, an iPad is a computer. But so is any cell phone, or e-reader, digital watch, even, strictly speaking.

So, an iPad is some kind of computer. But it doesn't seem to fit into previous models of e-reader, netbook, tablet, or laptop.

It may or may not be a new thing. But if it isn't, then what IS it? I don't have one and haven't seen one, but in talking about them, I've used "like" a lot but not "is"...

p.s.- kas23 seems to imply that the iPad is a tablet, but haven't tablets also always had physical keyboards and largely been a modified version of a standard laptop?
