I disagree. I went from the original iPhone to the iPhone 4, expecting to be blown away by the speed difference. Guess what? Not much faster at all. Camera is still a closed shutter _forever_ while launching. Text messaging, maps, etc. slow to respond. Typing characters just as slow as ever - I've typed a whole word and then look at the screen to see the letters i n d i v i d u a l l y appear. I still love my iPhone4, but I can't imagine how you could have seen a difference from the 3G to the 3GS when Original to 4 was minimal improvement. Don't get too excited for the 5.

I don't know if it's your phone or your eyes that are messed up... but my 3Gs was WAAAY faster than my orignal iPhone... and my iPhone 4 is WAAAY faster than my 3Gs was... Maybe some people are just hard to please?

haha. well, i don't think it's either of those things. but seriously, i wanted to LOVE the speed of my iPhone4, i was just really surprised at how little difference there was. doesn't your camera take a long time to launch? that shutter comes up and, damn, the moment i wanted to photograph has passed before i can take a pic! i mean, it is a bit faster, just not a huge improvement.

Yep. Hopefully the battery life wont suffer due to larger display.
It's not some random schmuck who green lights final product designs at Apple.

It is doubtful that Steve will let that happen. I think one can call him "detail-oriented."

Have a little faith in Apple.

The camera does take forever to launch on my 3GS. Drives me insane. But the overall speed is a vast improvement to the 3G my mother is using. It pains me to have to do something for her on her phone.

You have to realize that the 2G(or 3G) iPhones had a 2mpx sensor with no (auto) focus. So even if the iPhone4 has an A4 chip x times faster than the old iPhones, it has to launch a far more sophisticated sensor(and a display with higher resolution).

Its like saying you had to wait x amount of time to launch angry birds on the original iPhone and then you launched Infinity blade on the iPhone 4 and were dissapointed because it took the same amount of time on each of them.

I don't know how you do it. I applaud you.

3G -> 3GS -> Black 4 -> White 4 -> Pending 5

Well some people either cannot afford to buy an expensive phone every year, or they don’t need to buy a new phone every year (most people probably fit under this one).

Also, you are aware that from Black iPhone 4 -> White iPhone 4, nothing actually changed apart from the colour, right?

I hope we can get some pics of the actual device soon

I love all the mockups, it would be really dissapointing if it's the same look as the iphone 4 (even with upper management not being happy with that design, it's all speculated)

please, what is different w/ this guy from loop and the guy from AT&T that makes them a SOLID SOURCE; MacRumors I expect you to explain why he is better than all the other ones to be able to call this rumor a solid lead...

I think everyone is citing everyone else as their "source", with nobody actually in the know at all!

Most of these stories just re-iterate what we've already seen on MacRumors here... I think this website is probably the primary source for journalists.. whose stories then get retold on this website!! Like a mega circular chain of whispering rumours!!!!

It must be HILARIOUS to be an Apple top exec knowing their plans, and reading all the back and for on the net...

Bring it on! I need a new iPhone now more than ever, my iP4 was blacklisted and is now an expensive iPod Touch. =/ (Turns out the dude I bought it from got it for free off a new subscription and then decided to just disappear and not pay for anything. So, IMEI blacklisted.)

Hmmm, so you can't just get a new sim? I don't believe they would black list the device....

My sister has a friend who works at one of them ATT stores, they say the dumbest things. I already don't like ATT, and it might not be like this at all the stores but I know they say things just to get a sale. I remember when the verizon iPhone was coming, she was like "no it's not" and now they are like "ATT is getting the latest iPhone first, and then verizon will get it 30 or 60 days later" and a bunch of junk.

She works sales but that's what you should expect from sales people. I doubt this guy really knows what he's talking about. He's probably right, saying September to October launch, but that's almost as accurate as someone saying a new iPhone will be released this year or in the next 2 months.

This could be just sarcasm that I'm not detecting (I'm fully in support of a standard sarcasm font, I seem to miss it a lot). If you are being sarcastic, please ignore what I say here.:p

But just in case it's not, you are aware that a VP is a bit more reputable than a sales person, right? It doesn't mean what he says is true (CE-Oh No He Didn't!) but I would hardly equate their knowledge to a sales associate.

I COMPLETELY agree about the camera. In fact, in my experience the camera launches slower now than on my old iPhone 1. However, almost everything else seems to launch faster or run faster than on the previous generation, by a very noticeable amount, too. I've historically been quite surprised by the improvement in speed. Just out of curiosity, do you jailbreak your devices?

Coming back to the camera: this is actually a really annoying point for me. I desperately want a camera app that launches faster. I can't count the amount of times I needed to take a picture but the app takes far too long to ready itself. The camera is almost worthless to me because of this. Here's to hoping the quick camera feature of iOS significantly speeds this up!

EDIT: Also, where he heck is the source for this? There's not even a quote of the alleged confirmation, just a quote from the VP *after* the fact. Damn...

I just want the damn media event date to get announced already. I mean, it's almost the end of August and we still have no idea on when Apple plans to hold their event to reveal the phone.

I went Original - Black 4 - White 4

I skipped the 3G and 3GS b/c i felt like the curved plastic back, besides being bad ergonomically, felt cheap.

No, I don't jailbreak. And yeah, I do notice that apps load faster. But some areas, particularly text messaging, still are slow. I'm still happy with my 4, I guess I just expected to notice a bigger difference between Original iPhone and the 4.

This is exciting for me. I've been using the 3G for other 3 years now, and I'm just tired of how slow it is. I hardly use it anymore, because of all the waiting just to do anything. The maps applications is especially bad, just trying to type in a location and find it is painful. Something major changed when they released the 3GS, because the difference between it and the 3G is like night and day.

Anyway, all I'm hoping for is 64GB Capacity, 8MP Camera, and the new Dual Core A5. It feels like I've been throwing away $100/month for last few years, and I look forward to being able to use my phone again.

I am glad it's not just me.
Yep, my iPhone 3G has the same issues as you described. Still works flawlessly, but just too slow. I will keep it for my son to listen music/play games and jailbreak it to take on international trips and make local calls.

It's weird. I went from a 3G to the 4 and I remember first opening the camera app outside the Apple Store and it was wicked fast. Over the past year, I don't know if it is the restore, camera roll, number of apps in the background or what, it has gotten worse.

My next phone I will be reluctant to restore from my backup. I may just setup as a new phone.

You're joking right? You have to be the only person on the planet who thinks the 3GS was bad ergonomically over the square iPhone 4. Either that or you don't understand what ergonomics is.

At least the camera app thing will be completely resolved by iOS5. That instant ability to take pictures will be a godsend. Definitely don't like how long it takes, nowadays, to bring up the app and ready the camera to take a picture. It's not impossible, but it certainly puts a damper on (in the moment) pictures. Being able to do it, right away, will even allow you to reach for that iPhone a lot slower and still take the pic. (Less possible accidents that way)

On the contrary, of the many discussions I have participated in online, the only people who think the 3G has good ergonomics are those who don't understand ergonomics.

Briefly:
Ergonomics is not based on how the phone LOOKS, it's how well it physically interfaces with a human. The curved back appeals to people who look at it and think "wow, it's curved like the palm of my hand, that must be great ergonomics!" Unfortunately, most people hold their phone by the EDGES, they don't cup it in the palm of their hand. In fact if you held the 3G so that the back conformed to your palm while talking on it, your hand would have to be fully open, fingers extended, and the phone pressed up against your head with your palm. I don't know, maybe you walk around all day like that, but it sure isn't how most people use their phone. The iPhone 4, however, has nice flat edges that are PERFECT for grasping while talking on the phone. They give very precise control and allow for a secure grip, unlike the curved edges of the 3G, which promote "rocking".

This is exciting, however I don't expect the new iPhone to have huge differences. Maybe it will be faster, with 32 gb and 64 gb models. And of course it will have iOS5.

take it easy

Why is everyone so excited about the new version when the current one is not working properly (e.g. battery issues due to background running of junk apple native programs)?

i have no idea what you are talking about. i hold my 3g by the EDGES and it feels comfortable. i held others iphone 4, bb9000, bb9700 the same way...and they all feel the same. how do you hold your phone
