Early Verizon iPhone Reviews

In the area where I am AT&T is much faster than Verizon's 3G network.

I average about 3-3.5 mbps down and 1-1.5 up. My VZW mifi will get <1.5 mbps down and up!

To me, data speeds are way more important than an occasional dropped call so I'll be sticking with at&t.

Not only that as more leave att to join verizon, hopefully voicecall on att will improve. i will stick with att for now also.

losing internet because of a phone call so much reminds me of the dial up days. shuddering...

Sucks for all you who have to choose between faster data and dropped calls or more reliable service and dropped data.

Glad I have reliable service and fast data.

It's funny. Whats the big fuss over AT&T vs Verizon. What matters is the iPhone is now available to both carriers. Verizon users who wants to stick with them can now have the iPhone. Nothing wrong with that. :)

Nothing is wrong with the Verizon users..., it means more to people who have trouble with AT&T reception and looking to switch to Verizon... the switchers... that's where the money is, in these Verizon vs AT&T tests ;)

So we've got the GSM iPhone on AT&T. We're getting the CDMA iphone on Verizon. Where is my iDen iPhone? Nextel needs to get on that!

All joking aside, this is what I had expected. Everyone knows that Verizon has the largest, most reliable talk network in the country. But I had a feeling that they had a big mouth about their data.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Verizons data speeds were a key reason that caused me to switch back to AT&T. I routinely got (500, 1k] downloads whereas my AT&T counterparts were getting (1.5, 4.5] in side by side comparisons. Fortunately for me I live in an area that has good voice on both carriers so the choice was easy.

So note sure if you are saying you aren't with AT&T or Verizon, but as I have long said it really depends on where you live. In my case, AT&T has as good if not better coverage than Verizon. So I get reliable service and fast data with AT&T. If I lived in SF, things would be different.

I can't help but laugh at all the people who before said Verizon's network would certainly be MUCH faster than AT&T's. I just have to laugh. Like you honestly forgot that BEFORE the iPhone EVERY and I do mean EVERY cell network really wasn't that loved by ANYONE?! They ALL have their faults. There is not one, nationwide cell service that doesn't have the best coverage, fastest data, cheapest pricing, best customer service, best cell phone, doesn't try to limit what the cell phone can/can't do, doesn't try to nickel and dime you.

The BIG deal with the iPhone initially was it BUCKED the cell system. For once, a phone manufacture was able to force their way and say "no, this is how OUR phone should work. Cell company, YOU work with us." THAT was the revolution. That was the big change. It wasn't about being on AT&T because they were better, AT&T was just willing to bend. I just hope we don't go back to those days, sadly I'm worried it was just bucked and not broken - hence the crappy things we have now with tethering (e.g. why should I pay an extra service just to hook my computer up to use data through the same device?).

I have a question about Verizon 3G service...
Since you can't do phone call and use the internet at the same time...
What if I have skype and Line2 running 24/7 on the Verizon iPhone? Does that mean my regular phone won't ring and get sent to voicemail?

Skype uses data, meaning you *can* use Skype and other data services simultaneously. It's only "normal" phone calls that are affected by this limitation. (Not sure how Line2 works, sorry. :-/)

Phone calls have priority, meaning if you're using data and you get a call (or make a call), the data connection will be terminated for the duration of the call. The only exception is if you're in Verizon's 2G area, where phone calls will go to voicemail if you're using data. (I'm not sure how that works considering the push notification service maintains a constant data connection, but Verizon's 3G network is much more geographically widespread than AT&T's, so most people won't have to worry about this.)

Ha Ha LOVE IT! CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW AT&T? No wonder you can talk and use data at the same time... it takes forever to get the data. Have to use that time constructively..."hold on, it's still loading...":apple:

So they tested an iPhone that has iphone network subscribers versus an iPhone that currently has no current iphone network subscribers. Seems accurate.

As we've been saying...

"- "This Verizon version of the iPhone 4 seems to have none of the same antenna issues [as the AT&T model]"

Gee, surprise surprise. The "antenna issue" exists solely on AT&T, which implies it's not an antenna issue from the start.

The antenna issue has been observed on numerous carriers throughout the world.

It's called Three in the UK.

Compare

ATT Better at:

  • Speed
  • Data and Voice Multitasking
  • International Coverage
  • Rollover Minutes
  • Free Wifi
  • Battery Life (GSM better than CDMA)

Verizon Better at:

  • Coverage
  • Fewer Dropped Calls (esp NY and SF)

So, if you have good AT&T coverage, it's a no brainer. The feature that I use least on my phone is the "phone". Data and speed are much more important.

Speed Test Results

From Engadget via 9 to 5 Mac. Verizon is able to prevent network congestion because they block it at the source!

Wait, AT&T is faster after all?

Verizon FAIL.

And that is even before the millions of new data sucking iPhone customers are on the network

No data during a call? Isn't that a huge step back?

For once I'm glad for our mobile phone networks in the UK!

Honestly - I couldn't care less. I have the iPhone since day 1 and never ever had the need to browse the web or whatever while on the phone. If I'm on the phone, I actually talk to the people and listen to what they say. Case people can construct cases where you have to lookup something while on the phone - but at least for there was never the need (but at least I could if the need would come some day in the far future)

same here, I've never had a dropped call w/ at&t.

Probably depends on where you live. I never had a single dropped call. But I get often calls from a friend from Atlanta - he is on the iPhone4 and has to call be back every 10 minutes - no matter if he calls my iPhone or my land line (yes I am that old fashioned and still have one)

For many people it comes down to the choice:

(1) reliable phone calls and slower data network (and none while on the phone)
vs
(2) fast reliable network vs dropped call (but data network while the call lasts)

You pick based on your preferences (and features available at your location)

Again: this is not for all people - some have no dropped calls on AT&T and some see slow network on AT&T

Since upgrading from 3GS to iphone4, dropped calls are almost non-existant for me (except for weekdays at 5:01pm).

Other reasons I'm not going to VZW:

Data is cheaper on AT&T (assuming less than 2GB)
Texting is cheaper on AT&T (1000 texts for $10)
Of course, simultaneous data & voice
Faster data speeds . . .

When I had the 3GS, I was always longing for Verizon iphone. I even ordered an HTC Incredible, and, if they hadn't pushed back their delivery dates so much, even past the iphone 4 release, I probably would be using the HTC Incredible right now. So glad I tried the iphone 4.

Thanks apple!

I'm so glad Bell and Telus in Canada decided to abandon building on their CDMA network in favour of their brand new HSPA/UMTS network. I guess it's easier when you only have infrastructure for 34 million people vs. 300+ million, but no one misses CDMA here.

So, with Verizon, your friends, or anybody with access to your mobile telephone number, could annoy you by calling your mobile all day long whilst you're browsing the web, thus terminating your connection?

I don't live in the US, thus have no experience with Verizon or AT&T, but surely there must be a way to prevent the above situation?

There certainly is. Find yourself some better friends. ;)
