I had the 2 data plans that did not disappear even after a few billing cycles. I ended up calling c/s and giving them the IP4 IMEI #.

I just called customer service and said I needed to give them my iPhone IMEI. After taking it, she said "Oh, this is an iPhone so you need to keep the iPhone data plan on there. We'll leave that" and completed processing the change. I checked online and just shows the 1 unlimited plan now and I'm on it

Here I come Pandora and Netflix unlimited!

Edit: For anyone attempting this, make sure you select the $30 unlimited data & messaging for quick phones when you switch to your dummy phone IMEI and say you're using the same SIM card. You don't even need to turn it on, just keep using your iPhone. If you can't access data like me, while on wifi point your iPhone to http://unlockit.co.nz and follow the instructions. This should allow you to use data until you get the text. It took 5 days for me to get my text. If the original poster still checks this out, please update your original text with a note that you may not immediately receive the text messages and it may take up to a week.

If that phone is considered a "smart phone" I'm pretty sure you can keep the unlimited plan.
Messaging & Data Unlimited: Quick Messaging/Basic Phones
$30.00 Unlimited Unlimited Select

Its a basic phone ..... Could i basically "skip" a step, since i will be ordering my iphone since i already have the 30 dollar unlimited plan?

I am going to call CS and clean up a few loose ends with my discount and I will mention that I would like to make sure they have the right IMEI. I would like to see just the one plan listed.

Kind of confused...

Ok, so I did everything last Sunday. I called AT&T CS and got my IMEIs changed and data plans switched. I did all the steps to the letter. I looked at my OLAM and it was on the correct $30 data/messaging plan so I was stoked and started the waiting process. Well, the text never came. It's been 6 days since I made the switch. I looked at my OLAM today and I'm still on the $30 data/messaging plan. I did a *data# and I got a strange looking text. I can't figure out how to post a pic (I'm making this post on my iPhone).

But it looks like this:

Next Bill Cycle:
11/18/10
Data (MB) : 4250.1 of 2048
Overage : 2202.3 (Deactivated)
Data (MB) : 1069.6 of Unlimited
Messaging : 25 of Unlimited

It would appear from this text that I'm now on the Unlimited plan, but I never got the text and my OLAM is wrong still.

So I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas about what's going on.

Also, I've read every page of this thread and can't really find any answer

Thank you in advance

This happened to me. I actually had to call the CSR and switch the IMEIs back to the iphones and then call a day later to switch it back to the non-smart phones. It's a pain to do this but it should work. You might want to wait another day to see if you get the texts but if not, then try this and I got the texts in 9 hours after reswitching. No doubt the CSRs weren't too happy and were questioning why I was switching so much. I just said I was debating on selling my phones on CL and changed my mind.

Same here. Had to switch back and then do the process over. Worked great the second time.

From the Slickdeals post of this thread:

(don't!) Change your new iphone data plan to a grandfathered unlimited data $30 a month plan
NOTE FROM THELNEL52

I apologize for this abrupt deletion-

Slickdeals recently received a nice note from the a large law firm contracted by AT&T demanding that we remove certain content form this thread that "induces [users] to defraud AT&T".

We don't agree that there's any defrauding going on, necessarily, but we also don't want to pick a fight w/ a giant company, so we are going to comply with their request and remove everything that they have characterized as "offending" while we try to sort everything out.

This will be updated when we have new information.

Not working!

This is the second time I've tried this and this time I got the 2 text messages. However, when I logged into my account, I saw that the $30 for Non-Smartphone data plan was replaced with iPhone 3G 2GB (No Visual Voicemail) data plan.

I don't know what to do anymore.

I think this loophole has been officially closed. I have personally done this on my line in the past and was successful. I just tried to get my wife's iPhone 4 line back on unlimited data though and after having her on the $30 basic plan, the system automatically added the 2gb plan, not the unlimited.

My "activate using an iPhone 2g" approach worked. I activated a new line using an iPhone 2g. Waited a day, went to the AAPL store, upgraded to an iPhone4. Unlimited data remained. This was confirmed after my billing cycle started over.

I'm selling the 2G if anyone is interested. No guarantee it will work for you, however.

EDIT: did this 3 weeks ago.

As I posted earlier, I tried this method earlier this month and on the 9th of November my wife's got received the automated texts telling her she had automatically been switched to an iPhone appropriate plan. When we checked OLAM to see whether she had unlimited, she had been added to the 2GB plan.

I have done this myself previously on my own iPhone and was able to get the unlimited data, so I think in fact this loophole has been closed.

I'm sure the 2G iPhone method works fine though, it's just a matter of getting your hands on one (which is pretty rare these days).

What exactly you trying to do?

So, has anyone tried this lately? Does it work still? I was able to do this a few years ago successfully, but haven't tried again lately.

Anyone?
