This will not work. Your previous account with AT&T stays online for 90 days after you terminate. Which means if you decide to come back, all the next rep does is re-activate it.

In other words, you are in for a surprise and non eligibility status again.

You were answering my question right?

You know what else works?

Paying what it ****ing costs. If you don't want a contract there is a no-contract option available to you. In fact there are two. One is an early termination fee. The other is to buy non-subsidized phones. AT&T is actually doing you a favor by offering you a very expensive phone for $500 instead of $700 (full price). They did the same thing last year by offering you a $600 phone for $200.

I'm not trying to defend AT&T or anything but it seems as if this thread (and hell, this whole forum) is full of babies who scream and cry if their parents don't let them get the candy at the checkout counter.

A bunch of entitled jerks.

Want an iPhone 3GS? Pay what it costs then.

Im telling you Macrumors needs like a post of the day or post of the hour! ( yours would make the cut)

This does actually work. You'd be surprised how often things like this change as well. I used it to get out of my 3 Mobile Contract here in the UK.

contracts are different in the UK, but the point here is that you can't start a new contract immediately after cancelling your old one, and whenever you cancel you lose your number.

This is common information. It gets rehashed every time an iPhone comes out.

Here's the deal, guys. If you're an AT&T customer already, you can't do any manipulation of lines, etc without being subject to the 90-day restriction. If you call and cancel one line, you will not be eligible to add another line for 90 days. If you cancel the whole contract, you can't get another one for, yep, 90 days.

This means you WILL lose your number, since numbers reenter the pool after 30 days, and you can't request a new number when you go to get the new phone.

This only works for people who want to switch from OTHER carriers. If you want to ditch your own carrier, and sign up again, there is a (logical) penalty for that action of not being able to regain service for 3 months.
Thank you for being the voice of reason. Do you all REALLY think cell providers have not considered this? 90 days before you can sign up a new account, number is lost after 30 days, thus you lose your number to save a few bucks. Good job.
Thats the truth there folks. You cant cancel a contract and start another one the next day.
+1

Bingo. You cant cancel citing a rate increase, then agree to the SAME INCREASE 24 hours later.

This is the problem with the world. Everyone is trying to game and scam the system in an effort to get an item they don't deserve at a price they equally do not deserve. I get a feeling of satisfaction when I buy a product that I worked to earn the right way. What kind of satisfaction do these people have trying to game a system to save some money. Its pathetic really. You people who do this really do disgust me. And I am only 20 years old and I believe in doing things the right way, how old are you people? You act like children.
