I find that i eat terribly in the winter/spring, but in the summer/fall when my garden is ready and fruit trees are ready to be picked clean i essentially turn into a vegetarian and eat only my own home-grown fruit and veggies.

I love how picking an apple off my tree and eating it on the way to work makes me feel great all day, but i cant stand to buy fruit in the store (unless is tropical fruit i cant grow at home) because its always disappointing and not up to par with my orchard.

I'm 6'4" and weigh about 165 (last time i checked). Yeah, im one scrawny sob, but i find its actually difficult for me to gain weight. I started eating alot more protein and worked out for about an hour (all the time i had :/) three days a week and gained a whopping 0 pounds of muscle mass. My Dad was the same way when he was young, and now he is a pretty buff fellow, so i'm not going to stress too much.

Do lots of cardio! On average I do anywhere between 1 hour to 90 minutes of straight cardio. Which usually is a warm up on the elipticle then running at least 3 miles. You will lose weight FAST that way and if you eat right. Your stamina will also skyrocket.

Drop the soft drinks and drink water or "real" green tea, not the bottled or canned stuff. Helps pick your metabolism up and is good for the arteries. Dont forget a good quality multivitamin.

Why is that exactly? I weight about 130 lbs (59 kg) and I'm 5' 9". My BMI puts me at around 19.2, which is perfectly normal.

How much do you suppose people should weigh?

I got a friend who is your size and weighs a bit over 70 kg - looks quite unhealthy. Maybe you are in better shape than him. ;)

I think the rule everything in moderation is the best way to go. Over protecting your body by cutting too much stuff deemed unhealthy out might make your body oversensitive.

Its good to 'abuse' the body i.e. introduce it to a wide range of foods once a while so it can be...'tougher'...i.e. develop better resistance/be more adaptive

Milk is bad bad bad

Read the china study - no milk .... no cancer
who in their "right" mind would take something made by a big fat black and white animal with 4 stomachs made for babies only and comes out of a nipple that rubs on the ground next to an ass thats made by a beast that eats only toxic substances and is full of hormones fat and disease!

What is moderation?? 100 yrs back moderation wasn't a fizzy drink a day or a pack of crisps a day! moderation means nothing unless you think about what you put in your GOB

:D... I do like milk, but have not directly consumed homogenized milk for half my life now, only 2%.

I suppose if I were to approach from your perspective, I would find eating the "big fat black and white animal" would be worlds worse than consuming its fluids. The smell of red meat cooking is rather unpleasant to me, but what's worse is the smell of swine cooking!

I've been able to control my weight by eating a balance of meats, vegatables and whole grains. Resistance exercise also generates muscle which is expensive for the body to maintain.

I know people have had success with vegetarian diets but be careful. A few friends of mine who previously were at a healthy weight became slightly overweight when they adopted a vegetarian diet. I've found that many people end up eating french fries and pasta when they go veggie.

A lot of people go obese when they have an omnivorous diet because they only eat fast food. Same thing.

Most people actually lose some weight when they start a vegetarian diet.

Oh sure, eating two quarter pounders with cheese and large fries every day will certainly cause you to gain a lot of weight while gaining few nutrients. However, simply cutting the meat out of those quarter pounders will not help the person much--and that is what I mean.

I think that many believe that if they do nothing else other than not eating meat that they will be healthy and lose weight -- which is misguided. You can be perfectly healthy and feel great without having to give up meat--the best source of protein.

If a person transitions from a fast food diet to a vegetarian diet and loses weight--its because they've also made other changes to improve their diet and health. Cutting meat is not necessary for the vast majority of people.

I don't think anyone here is stating that if someone wants to lose weight they should go vegetarian. But it is true that if someone does a healthy vegetarian diet it's not difficult to lose some weight because by cutting out meat from your diet you're also cutting out a lot of fat.

But no one should do a vegetarian diet simply by cutting out meat. Anyone who does that is just stupid. A vegetarian diet is much more than "not eating meat".

And actually I don't think you should consider that meat is good for you just because of protein when most people who have an omnivorous diet actually eat TOO MUCH protein and there's lot of health issues associated with that.

lol have you ever even seen cow? Since when do cows nipples drag along the ground? Last time i checked grass wasn't a toxic substance either so as long as you know where your milk comes from there are zero problems. Plus last time I checked every baby drink milks and the human population still exists so it can't be all bad :)

Who in their right mind would eat a plant that grows out of toxic soil, fertilized with animal waste and treated with toxic pesticides?

Please, one can make any type of food sound unpleasant by describing it in a certain way.

Eating fat does not cause people to become fat. In fact, it's the opposite. People get fat because they consume foods containing lots of refined sugar, refined flour, and chemical preservatives and additives.

The only fat you should be concerned about are hydrogenated vegetable oils (trans fat). Sapiens (and carnivorous animals) have been eating fatty/high cholesterol meat for tens of thousands of years for maximal health. Vegetarianism and veganism are the result of modern day phobias brought on by bad nutrition science, ill-informed nutritionalists, and poor/biased scientific studies.
