You didn't try the local cuisine then? I wouldn't call it junk food unless all you ate were fried falafel (or tamiya as they call them there) from street carts.

I never touch street food anywhere in the world but Egyptian Tamias are the very best, i mean the one you buy from proper shop.

Also liked sugar cane juice, guavas and mango juice absolutely the best.

Why ever not?

Properly prepared, street food can be brilliant.

Belgian frites are brilliant from street vendors in Brussels, and I have had corn on the cob strolling through Zagreb or Istanbul.

What about proper restaurants?

Have you never asked your hotel for recommendations for places that served good quality, local food?

Never asked the colleagues from that country - for recommendations of places to see, restaurants in which to eat, - you may have met in the course of your work?

There are many restaurants with nice Egyptian cuisine yes i tried them. Its a hit and miss, sometimes the food is fresh and nice sometimes is not.

Three blockes from my hotel there was a Pizza hut so almost every night we use to walk there and enjoy it.

You travel to Egypt and then proceed to eat at Pizza Hut?

I can envisage doing that once, perhaps, in a period of six or so weeks but nearly nightly?

Never.

Yes every nigh but only small size. The good thing about it was we use to walk for a very long distance so it didn't felt heavy for the stomach.

My wife use to swap between pasta, pizza and other by me i just like the pizza. Day time of course we eat different.

Weather its a junk fast food or principal meal how many times do you eat out per week/month?

For some, cooking is considered waste of time so totally depend eating out but not sure how common it is.

Sometimes when i feel like it i grab some fast food and also dine out once a week with my wife
About once every other month. Never with my wife.

When I was in NY I loved street food as a treat no matter the ethnicity, including the notorious if misnamed "dirty water hotdogs". Same with walk-in shops either uptown or out in Queens that offered ethnic fare to go, empanadas, Cuban sandwiches, Malaysian specialties made by expats from Penang, etc.

And Sixth Avenue in midtown at lunchtime was food cart heaven. Used to grab something from there at least a few times a month and export it to the then newly renovated Bryant Park, sit on the grass, admire the flower gardens, catch a few rays, sometimes in summer there were stand-up comedy shows... it was a lunch hour worth taking away from the standard lentil soup at desk routine, for sure.

Also really fun at work were birthday celebrations for some East Asians on staff. We'd take a four-hour lunch on some Thursday, maybe a dozen of us, take the train down to Chinatown and up into one of those no-name fourth-floor restaurants where there's no menu and no English spoken, you just go with someone who knows the place and they bring out the food... and the food.. and the food...

Yes!

One of my favorite memories of our last NYC trip two Christmas ago, was running out in the __insanely__ cold weather at like 1am, I had on my Uggs, boxers and a trenchcoat, hahahaha, me and my buddy hit a bunch of carts in time square (for the whole family), I was carrying this huge bag of falafel, had yogurt running out all over, roasted nuts, a bags of sausage dogs (he flew in and grabbed a pizza on the way back, I left him for dead :D)

We had a LOT to drink :p

Sounds amazing.

I miss working at my previous job for many reasons, but my soon to be retired supervisor used to bring in awesome food for the department (Mainly pies and stuff from the farmer’s market stands in 30 Rock). We would all treat each other.

Now I work an Avenue away from Bryant Park. Finally tried a Food Truck earlier this year but further up town (a nice Omlette from the Eggstravaganza truck). We’re spoiled for choice, but my body requires I eat simple no matter the cuisine. Sounds wonderful though.

I basically am back to more veggies and protein. Trying cut out the sweets, but I am happy to be getting more greens into my diet.

Given your love of Japanese culture, you're already more than probably aware that some Asian cuisines offer excellent vegetarian dishes; and stir-fried greens from an Asian restaurant or indeed, food truck can be amazing.

And Chinese culture too. Yes, Asian veg is amazing.

I do eat fish, chicken and eggs (and pork in my wontons if the pork includes ginger and greens), but I’ve had some wonderful Asian vegetarian things. Vegetable tempura when done right (I.e. crispy batter) is delicious.

Thanks for the tip. :)

I try to limit to 3x/week. Some days I'm so busy, I eat out 5x/week. Usually I'll pack a lunch if I don't need to stop, otherwise it's Taco Bell or the like.

I eat out a few times / year.

I think that food that I prepare at home is much better for me.

It's certainly much cheaper than eating out.

I remember now the only street food i had was a kebab in a truck, it was delicious i give it 8/10.

we eat out more in the summer

we had an excellent bowel of vegan Pho the other day.

Living in this part of the country has major benefits as far as various cuisine goes. I'm very spoiled. I feel the same in NYC, too. PNW also has some amazing places to eat nowadays among breweries, that is.

2-4 times per month. I'm lucky my wife is an amazing cook. I'm pretty much useless in a kitchen.
It never occurred me to ask you how often you ate Portillo's in college.

When I lived in Champaign there was no Portillo's. When I started working on the north side of Chicago I went once or twice. After I moved to Austin I probably went to the one in my hometown once.

When I was in school, Jimmy John's was the place to go. It started in eastern Illinois and it was headquartered in Champaign.
