Taking a chance on an 800mhz 14'' iBook G3 from 2002. I missed having a Dual USB iBook, so I've been looking around eBay and came across this 800mhz model for a good price. I like that this iBook has a DVD/CD writer combo drive. There's no OS or HDD, so I will have to use my external SSD. I plan on using this iBook mainly for OS 9, though I'll run Jaguar on here too until I can get a G4 PB to run Jaguar on.

It arrived yesterday and it works. There were some surprises, however. First, the optical drive doesn’t work. Had to use my external FireWire CD-RW drive to install OS X. To install OSX, I burned a copy of the 900mhz iBook G3 install discs. It was the closest match I could find.

Second surprise was that the mouse doesn’t work. Had to use a usb mouse.

The install went well and then I got my third surprise when I clicked the “About this Mac” box. This iBook is actually a 700mhz model instead of an 800mhz.

Final surprise came when I finally got the internal optical drive to eject and discovered a retail copy of Leopard version 10.5.6.

I’ll install OS 9 another day.

The irony of that is striking :) Congrats on your new toy! Keeping fingers crossed that the GPU won't die.

I’ve had some time to mess around with this 1.33ghz ibookG4 and there’s some things I’ve noticed.

The thing is just icky dirty. It’s not obvious at first but it just has gunk in all of its cracks n crevices. I am definitely taking this thing apart for a deep clean.

There is an intermittent GUI artifact - a line that shows up & goes away located right at the top of the dock. I’m thinking a crimped lcd cable perhaps?

WiFi Works but is pretty blah. I’m literally sitting right next to my upstairs airport & I get a wimpy 2 bar w/ internet robustness ticked. It works but I find this weird. None
Of my other macs PPC or otherwise does this.

Anyhow I haven’t done a clean install yet as I want to salvage some software on it so that may fix some of these weird quirks. Updating to 10.4.11 at the moment. We’ll see how it behaves.

Yep, 10.4.11 improved quite a bit from wireless speeds to browser compatibility. Next step is to clean this thing up, max out the ram etc.

Here's an iPhone 5 16GB that I bought from eBay UK for £12 GBP. I found it in the spares/repairs section and very helpfully, the seller had explained within the listing that the battery no longer held a charge for a sufficient period. Once I won the bid, I also ordered a replacement battery for next to nothing. They both arrived on the same day (how's that for perfect timing?) and after ten minutes with a screwdriver and a putty knife it was restored to perfect working order . :)

Just picked up a clean grape imacg3 w/ matching kb, puck mouse & loads of os & software cds running 8.6 for $15.00 bucks at the thrift. Couldn’t pass that up.

Will get pics later.

Nice find! I've never even seen an apple product of any kind at a local thrift store.
I was able to pick up a Bondi G3 on craigslist for $25 a couple months ago though, so I can't really complain too much.

On FB marketplace I just picked up two 23" Cinema HD displays + Power bricks and boxes for $100. I'm really excited to get my MP set up with them and see why people like them so much!

Iphone 5 series was my favorite form factor. Truthfully, I really liked the 4 with its squared off aluminum surround & buttons, but preferred the elongated design of the 5. The Iphone has never been quite as cool since (especially when the removed the headphone jack  )

Nice score!

I have a black 5 that I got for free but cannot figure out how to get around a password unfortunately. I guess there's a way but haven't had the time to thoroughly research it, so it lives next to my 4s in my drawer.

I am a huge fan of the aluminum cinema displays. I use one every day and love the color and tight resolution that is not present on my acrylic 23 cinema displays - love those too, but more for the asthetic pairing with period PMG4 machines. Anyhoo, those 23 inchers are an awesome score & I bet they'll kill next to eachother :) My dream is actually to get two of those 30 inchers (freaking love love those) but the cost is prohibitive. That and I dont really have the space at the moment. Oh boy tho, if I could dial in a pair for a good price, Id figure out how to make space for them.

Thanks. Quite a few bargains can be had in the spares and repairs section. :)

Yeah, I was quite dismayed to discover that Apple has removed the headphone jack from the iPhone range. Typical of them, really.

Is it an iCloud password or the main passcode for the phone? If it's the latter, your solution is right here. ;)

If ebay is so damn worth it, why are G4 TI 1GHZ so damn expensive, and also Quad G5s ? Even the crappy low end G4 powerbooks are expensive, including the 9900 1139/1138 - I have seen over 600 dollars ! I believe this is the endgame now we are in for PPC. Once ARM macs come out, PPC will be very very high on ebay since its been gone for over 13 years.

They're usually not selling for that, no.

I mean, people will list for stupid money all the time. I saw someone selling a G4 Graphite with a 15" Studio Display for £600 just yesterday (providing original receipt of purchase for £3k! - yeah mate that was 20 years ago...). It will never sell for that much. To be honest I would question spending anything more than £100 for most PowerPC, unless it has something very special about it...

You're not wrong, it's all selling for more, most of this stuff definitely didn't go for like $150 a couple years back. The thing is, most sellers seem to be selling things based on model, not spec, so you could get a Jobs era Powermac for about $150, no matter what's inside it.

And the number of times I've seen Mac Pros listed as a G5, and vice versa, is incredible.

Yes, look forward to seeing a pic. The 'grape' G3 doesn't turn up too frequently, and the 'lime' even less so. I have a few (now working) snow G3's that I saved from the dumpster, but they are taking up space that the 'little lady indoors' gets peaved about. One day I'll have to swap her for a lime G3.......;)
