That's pretty much exactly what I did. Bought a late '09 MacBook to use just as a bedside machine for Facebook and Netflix for $110 last September, and it serves both functions and more perfectly. I'm sure they're even cheaper now.

But according to reviews on the internet, they do not work well. Where to buy? Can anyone advise? Or is it easier to buy a Samsung IRC18650-22F and replace the six cells yourself.

This 2011 13" MBP was described by the seller in their eBay listing as non-working and only suitable for stripping down for parts because it no longer booted, as can be seen here with the flashing question mark and folder icon.
Credit where credit is due, members of the LEM FB group confirmed my suspicions that the fault lay with the SATA cable rather than anything serious and so I took the plunge and gambled with £90 GBP. After all, even if the suspicions turned out to be unfounded, I could always re-sell it to someone who needs a donor machine because as you can see, the condition is immaculate.
After replacing the SATA cable and installing a new drive, I cloned my existing Snow Leopard - El Capitan dual boot setup from my MacBook 5,2 with Carbon Copy Cloner via FireWire and Target Disk Mode, rebooted the MBP and waited for the moment of truth.
Hurrah!
Everything works perfectly and the finishing touch was booting into Snow Leopard to flash the Superdrive to RPC-1 so that I can watch whichever DVD I please without the annoyance of region restrictions. (On particular drives, VLC can't always bypass this issue unaided, so flashing to RPC-1 wherever possible works best.)
If I want to purchase a legal copy of a film from wherever in the world and watch it, no-one is going to stop me. Especially when it involves classic films.
I'm using this as my new driver for academic work but I'll keep the trusty MB 5,2 as a backup. The addition of Thunderbolt and FW800 are nice bonuses to say the least.

I recently purchased a liquid damaged 2012 13.3" MBP. Cost me $70 and lacked an HD, battery, and power adapter. The HD and power adapter were no issues for me as I would have replaced the HD with an SSD I already had as well as having a spare power adapter.
Upon arrival I plugged it in and it powered on and worked fine. I installed Catalina on it and all is fine. I decided It was also missing the bottom case screws, HD bracket, and battery screws. I purchased all three for a grand total of about $6. Given all was working I decided to purchase a new, OEM battery for $26. The system is now fully complete and I think the total cost, including shipping, came to $125. It's in almost perfect shape cosmetically and well worth the money.

Speaking of MacBook 5,2 I managed to get one in good condition for only £35 + shipping. To my surprise the original Apple battery is on 100% health, and with some added RAM and an SSD it now boots to Snow Leopard and El Capitan - soon to be a triple boot with a little Minty goodness

I am also looking at something on eBay currently, but I'll keep it a secret for now and post here if I win.

Most Linux installations will ask if you want to keep OS X and so will only take over the free space, then add an OS chooser (Grub) on startup of the MacBook. If that fails you've still got the Option key to get back into OS X, or your Carbon Copy if needed, although I always keep my backups on a bootable external drive.

Thanks for the info! Once I get more time, I might try to put Mint on my MacBook then. Do you know if the wireless card is supported in yours? I know some wireless cards aren't supported by some distros. I could probably steal some space from SL given it's not as hungry as El Cap and I store everything on external disks anyway.

Yes, wifi is supported on your MacBook but you need to install it from the System -> Additional Drivers section of the app menu. You can do this from the live DVD for testing purposes.
I think there's an option for additional drivers to be added when you actually install Mint.

They make good OS 9 machines. If you're feeling adventurous, you could try Cheetah (for laughs) or even coax Rhapsody aka OS X Server 1.x onto it. @LightBulbFun has done this IIRC.

Scored another cheap bulk auction with these neat cards in it. I’m thinking Ill slot the 66 in my Cyrix box & the 100 in my B&W.
Haven’t looked into these to see if they’re compatible but immediate thoughts were wireless cards for my PII & PIII gaming boxes. I’ll totally slot one of these lil guys into one of my PMG4s if they’ll work. Just haven’t gotten that far yet - been kinda busy.
Update: So the belkin card has drivers for 10.3 & 10.4. I think it’s going into my Blue & White.

Ive got one (forget the spec) in my MDD and is seen as native airport. it is vastly superior to the Apple airport of the time. When I get a chance I’ll get it’s info for others who might be looking for a pci wireless solution. Pulled that one from a dumpster Acer box I found.

You need to flash the Promise controller to make it Mac compatible. It will turn it into a Sonnet card, as those are otherwise identical. The factory utility for that exists but has not been made public yet. Keep an eye on the Storage section of the MacO9lives forum.
