It's not a discount coupon... it's a cash-back system of advertising from Microsoft. Basically, their model is that they get paid by their advertisers to direct you to their sites when you search for purchasable products. Then they pay you some of the advertising revenue in the form of a rebate. So far, several of the rebates have been insane -- like 25% off at eBay. They're not getting $75 to direct you to eBay and buy a $300 product -- that's a Microsoft loss leader. But they are paying you $75 to buy a $300 product at eBay after you searched.

You can find out more here:

http://search.live.com/cashback

You sign up for the account, go to live.com, and search from there for your product. You should see links at the very top that say Live cashback. If you follow those links and buy, you get the rebate specified.

Sadly, the ones for eBay are not appearing for most people right now, so they're not usable right now.

Cholidaynov2008

If you need a coupon, I got this one in my inbox yesterday:

CHOLIDAYNOV2008 for 10% off (up to $100)

Now is the right time to get a MacBook. I don't need one, but if I were to buy one I could get the 2.4GHz model for under 1k. WOW

coupons are not transferable and are account specific.

The coupon code may be the same, but unless you specifically received the coupon, you cannot use it.

thanks for ur replies mohan & raj..k hmm...
there is a 50$ mail in rebate offer on amazon and amazon doesnt tax the products which means i could get a 2gig model for 1250 bucks as against 1360 on the apple store.

should i go for the amazon offer(expires tomorrow) or pray hard for a ebay coupon?

update:
there is 7% cash back offer for jr store?

does it matter whether i make the purchase from apple store/reseller?can i trust them?

Well MacMall has it for $1238 and eBay has them for cheaper.

MacMall is an authorized reseller, many people on eBay aren't

MacMall also includes parallels and a free case with some mail in rebates…

I would highly recommend (if you can) waiting for the live cashback to return and then getting the MacBook on eBay from an authorized retailler - you can get it for under 1,000.

If you don't like waiting, go the MacMall route.

Maybe the ads are only showing up in certain states, and if you (or I in this case) use a proxy to search and get the ad to come up, perhaps I can get it.

I'm not sure how I'd go about doing that, since I'm behind a proxy already, cause of my stupid school.

Well if you read thru this thread the Ebay link dissappeared on my latest search too. Hopefully Microsoft is just pulling it temporarily until they up it to 30%:D

Oh, right, I missed that. Yeah, hopefully... I was planning on buying a laptop for a friend, and for myself. I had already bought an Acer Aspire One for my dad, but didn't go through the process correctly (I didn't have a Live.com account at the time of the purchase) so I'm "fighting" for my money with Live and eBay, communicating with them...

Yea there is quite a few hoops they make you jump thru but it is worth it.

I didn't receive this coupon and used it. No problemo with it yesterday. Saved me 78 bucks on a camera body and then 200 with live.com cashback.

I've purchased from JR before and they are very reliable and an authorized Apple reseller, with no sales tax outside NY state. Their prices are pretty good, especially with 7% cash back.

thanks for the info ref26.so its better to buy at places like these. The student discount on apple store means nothing..

Raj:
where do i apply that coupon?if i buy from j&r i get a 7% cashback. does the coupon warrant an additional 10% discount :D

Someone at slickdeals said that they talked to an Ebay rep about a 1hr ago and that Cahsback should be back up

But, I wouldn't really count on it.

Having said that, It does appear to go up and down so there's some reason to think it will pop back up.

(im buying like mad with this. Almost too good to be true :D )

Apparently the rules change often, but on my last reading the limit is somewhere over $2000 at this point.

Who knows.

Well it's gone right now. You will have to wait to see if it comes back.

But i've bought about 5 things. They wait two months before they actually pay you so who knows.

looks ok.
