Apple has always asked top dollar for what they sell. Sometimes they have the "best of breed" but that's usually short lived.

The mini has never been best of breed if you just look at the specs. Nexus 7.2 was better and cheaper.

One thing buyers got before was a price reduction on prior models, but look at the iPT... It's still the same price and got no update.

The mini go a joke of an update and wasn't state of the art on spec at the launch last year.

Apple is shooting themselves in the foot by expecting that anything they do will be seen as God like and the buyers will buy on command, no questions asked.

As a developer, one of the better things about Apple was that they only have a few choices, less fragmentation.

This is what they bashed MS over, it was confusing over versions of the OS... Pro vs RT...

Apple really dropped the ball here, the mini1 is now a joke, wasn't well received based on outdated specs upon release and is now still in the lineup? WTF is Mini1 doing in the lineup?

They need to come to terms with the fact that you can as more money _IF_ you offer what the people want and keep it updated.

IPT, sill in the lineup without a price change? WTF?

I hope the mini3 sales are so bad that they wake up.

Someone need a dose of reality.

I've never seen this much negative written about any Apple release.

Hello! The IPad Mini sales blew away the larger IPads. How in the world can you say the Mini was not well received?

Great point, it was more about the specs. The Mini came out with no retina and was priced much higher than the Nexus 7 which had a much higher PPI. Although the specs where not impressive, the overall size/design was a winner.

Good point about blowing away larger iPads... that's one of the reasons that I'm pissed... Apple seems to be pushing us towards Air vs Mini, yet we (at least many of us) want the mini.

I think this brings up yet another point, we wanted the mini, in spite of the specs ... the mini was late on Retina, and other issues, yet we STILL wanted it. This should have been a HUGE clue for Apple. ... yet what did the Mini get... touchid... just plain sad.

This is a "bottom line" decision. They have TONS of "extra" parts from the Retina Mini and know they can dump these new minis on the morons out there who say "the third generation is obviously worth the extra $100".

We should all be happy the Retina Mini is now $100 less and run out to get one if we haven't already. It's the steal of the century for the best tablet Apple makes.

That is exactly the way I feel and pounced on it Sunday. And the price might even drop lower making it that much sweeter. I will just ask for a refund of the difference, I have 45 days so I will be on the lookout.

My OG iPad mini is starting to get sluggish for some things. Debating on the Mini 2. Mini 3 isn't even worth considering. I actually had to have the Mini 2 and Mini 3 specs side by side to even see the difference. I thought there was a typo. They should have just called it the iPad Mini with Touch ID or something like that. The Nexus 9 is looking great.

Rmini at current sale price is a steal. Stay alert and weave your way through sales inclusive of BF and you have GRAND LARCENY my friend!

And you still can get $150 for a trade in on the first Mini with no hassle whatsoever. Just head to Best Buy. So you would even be exceeding grand larceny.

I'm surprised they ever made a mini to begin with.

Maybe just a knee-jerk reaction to the Nexus 7 :D I almost wish they didn't do the Mini1 because it wasn't as good as the nexus7 and made it OK for Apple to put out a non-retina display in a retina world.

I wonder if Jobs would have allowed a non-retina mini? He was more of a "we'll sell no wine before it's time" guy and would have either forced it retina or held off till it was done right.

My Mini 2 is the best upgrade of tablet I've ever made. I would gladly pay iPad Air pricing for an equivalent model. The only thing that got me now is how badly depreciation has hit the Mini 2. Really surprising, but I guess those are the market factors that exist outside of how good the device itself is.

Consider yourself the minority. I think a lot of former Mini users are now getting the Air 2 instead this year because it represents a much better value. Apple has effectively made it enticing for Mini users to fork over more money and upgrade to the Air 2.
If you're the type of person whose usage scenario is the same for both devices, this is probably true. For some of us, it isn't a choice. I'd love the iPad Air 2, but it's too large for me to use at work. The Mini is the perfect size and has become a vital part of my daily operations. I would have loved to have the A8X, or even the A8, along with other upgrades and improvements. That Apple forces us to go to the iPad Air 2 to get them means nothing for me, because no matter how much I pay, that iPad Air 2 isn't going to fit into my work clothing for easy accessibility.

The only people who seem to be complaining are those who upgrade every year, and they've got more money than sense.
People will complain for a variety of reasons, and there are certainly plenty of people with "more money than sense." Your generalization isn't going to make anyone feel any better, though. For what it's worth, I use my iPad mini in a professional environment (medicine), hand-writing notes, searching electronic textbooks, referencing things in online databases. Faster load speeds and faster search speeds are always welcome. The retina iPad mini is good, but I could always use more speed and less frequent reloads as I shift between programs. At this rate, I'll be someone who upgrades this particular device every year until the mini achieves a level of performance where I don't notice that I'm pausing multiple times per day waiting on it.

I probably don't represent the majority of upgrades, but I also doubt that I'm the only person who has these needs. Please take care with your generalizations. I'm glad that you're jumping into the retina iPad mini at such a good price, though. It's a fantastic device. It's just frustrating to think of how much better it could have been if Apple had given it the same attention that it gave to the iPad Air.

More money than sense? I could choose to insult you or simply point out I was looking forward to an 8X chip. I'm a very mobile person. I am not home often. I am a man. The iPad mini fits in my back pocket. The air does not.

Then you have more money than sense. An 8X chip would mean in the grand scheme of things a minor improvement over last years mini for a device that isn't designed for highly processor intensive work. It's like buying a new car every year for a minor engine upgrade. Pretending that you have substantive reasons when you just want something shiny and new is a bit rich.

I honestly despair of this place since the iOS devices were released. It's been nothing but an influx of whining newbies who take it as a personal insult that Apple won't release devices that conform to their exact personal specifications. It's not as if it is an actual big deal like the mythical G5 Powerbook (which people actually needed for work).

Yes, for professional use. Not for people whining because they want shiny new things.

Please take care with your generalizations.

I did. It's you who is treating an obviously soft generalisation as a hard one – an old sophist's trick.

Yeah, in today's world, you couldn't get 100 percent of people to agree that water is wet.

Not only that, but the idea that such an unbelievable statistic is cited without a source by a supposedly competent CEO should be seriously insulting to the intelligence of Apple customers. But apparently, most are too brainwashed to even question it.

Must....not.....discuss.....similarities......with.....today's......politics.

@Ledgem makes an excellent point. Many are of the opinion that these tablets are for content consumption and that a faster processor wouldn't make a difference because the device is not of intensive processor use...

Well, it's not just my opinion. Apple has teamed up with IBM (imagine that) in order to develop enterprise apps... Even Apple sees the tablet as more than just a consumption device.

It's not just that Apple is not putting the best foot forward on the mini, it's that they are out of line with the pricing of other products like the nexus 7.

How is it that the Air2 get so much in upgrades and the Air2 is the price of the Air1 last month yet the Mini3 is the same price as the mini2 last month?

ledgem makes an excellent point about the size factor in business. I've been asked to make event-planning software, part of the specs is that a group of workers have to connect to each other and perform on-site tasks with several controlling various events. This is in a manual labor environment and holding a full pad just doesn't work, yet processing power is important.

I think Apple and IBM as well as others see the future, we're in a race to put out the best apps to address the growing demand, Apple just made it so that I now need to look to other products.

Charging $100 for touchid on one device and charging $100 for touchid, A8X, thinner design, barometer, camera, etc... is clearly wrong.

I don't know what apple was thinking with this one, last year it was a difficult decision deciding between air or mini even with the washed out display, but this year? Hell, I wouldn't even consider the mini for a second.

The mini 3 is a piece of crap and apple is foolish for releasing this piece of garbage. Anyone who absolutely wants the mini form factor should just buy last years mini and save money.

Seriously, let's just say it. Look at the facts.

No Change
- A7 processor, no A8
- Presumably still 1GB of RAM.
- No mention of display improvements (especially color gamut).
- No form factor or weight improvements.

Upgrades
- Touch ID (not particularly useful on a tablet)
- Faster Wifi (nobody transfers huge files on a tablet)
- FaceTime camera (nice but not important most of the time. I'm not even sure this is an update, apparently they just stuck this on the slide because they didn't have enough real upgrade to fill it in with)

On top of all that, the iPad Mini 2 hits the 299 price point. It's basically the same tablet for 100 dollars less.

I love my iPad Mini 2, and it looks like it was a great buy one year ago, because the new iPad Mini 3 is essentially the same tablet.

Actually, the wifi hasn't been upgraded, it'S not ac

Stereo speakers

Anyone else disappointed with there being no stereo speakers with his update - sound quality has always been poor.

Considering what was added to the Air 2 from the 1st one, a huge disappointment is a huge understatement. :)

mini air on the way, rest assured!

I'm not fully convinced of this. I really hope your right.

How many think Jobs would have released the Mini3? (play the sound of crickets)

They should stop thinking about thin and give us real camera and battery life, make a real tablet "for the rest of us"

I don't know what was a bigger disappointment between this and the Mac Mini.

On a related note, I feel the same about the iPhone 6's speakers.

But as it is, this is perhaps the first time an iDevice is looking like a solid 2 year period before getting a (proper) upgrade.

Assuming you only mean devices running iOS, the iPod Touch would like you to notice that it is also still rocking the A5 and half a gig of RAM.

I hope this is a chance for the iPad Air to shine through the Xmas season, and that we get a refreshed Mini 4 in less than a year. I had seriously been thinking of upgrading from my first-yen iPad Mini, but there's no way I'm buying a new piece of hardware with a processor slower than that on my iPhone.

I can tolerate an iPad Mini that's six months behind the Air in tech, but not one that's been held back a full generation.
