I'm sitting here, as I write this post, on an emac...I don't think I'd particuarly want to swap it for anything other than an Imac (and those are a good few hundred pounds/dollars more)...So please Apple, keep the eMac going. A nice speedbump and a better graphics card is really all that is needed to keep these baby's sound!
"Amen" to that my english brother from a different mother...

The eMac is ideal for my home...tight budget...3 kids all using it.

I do not worry about it getting knocked over...(duh)...I can wipe fingerprints off the screen without "loosing it" when my kids poke at the screen...I might not be so saintly if my next screen is an LCD.

Cheers!

Couldn't they put a nice peice of toughed low reflection glass over the LCD?

And what if the LCD unit just looked like a half depth or thrid depth eMac. That would still be plenty stable...

The new eMac like a old iMac G3!!

I hope so. New eMacs in iPod mini colours would be interesting, Silver for schools and business, other colours for home users.

I still hope that the CRT goes for a 15" LCD...and colours and G4 used to distinguish them from the iMacs

I think Apple should bring back that colors like the person above has suggested. I have a Bondi iMac and I prefer the form factor of it over my eMac. I think Apple should bring back Sage, Indigo, Graphite, Lime and all the other cool colors. However, I doubt they will ever go back to colors unless we're talking about a iPod Mini.

there is definitely something to be said for the durability of a big, stable, hard plastic, inexpensive, all-in-one machine like the emac. i think that if apple takes away this line in favor of a version of the 17" imac, they will lose a demographic that once basically supported the entire company: education.

there is no question about the durability of a big piece of glass versus the fraile plastic covering of an lcd screen.

i don't have kids yet but when i do, my iMac is going to be in for it, just like the rest of my belongings.

eMac

I don't know why everybody rags on the eMac. I mean, it was originally made for education which means it can stand to most things little kids and other people throw at it. I think the eMac has some life still left in it; If they in someway re-worked the form factor with the CRT and put a G5 in it, I think it could still last; If they redo the eMac, it would be nice to have these specs:

eMac 1.6GHz G5 Combo: $899
1.6GHz PowerPC G5
256MB RAM
80GB HD
17" CRT Screen
nVidia GeForce FX 5200 64MB Ultra

eMac 1.6GHz SuperDrive: $1099
1.6GHz PowerPC G5
512MB RAM
120GB HD
17" CRT Screen
nVidia GeForce FX 5200 64MB Ultra

This means that Apple would need to update the Graphics Card on the iMac G5 (which needs to be anyway) to a nVidia GeForce 5600 FX Ultra or something with at least 128MB memory. I mean, if you're paying $1300-$1800 for a computer, have something a little better than the FX 5200 Ultra (and in no means am I ragging on the FX 5200; its a great card but is a older, budget card). Drop that card into the eMac G5 which would be better than the ATI 9200 card currently in it AND it would support the "Core Image" included with Tiger. I doubt these configs would ever happen, but you can dream can't you?

Update eMac's specs to today's world and make it a silent computer. I don't like the idea of phasing out eMac either... :(

The durability of the eMac is very obvious. At the Chestnut Hill Apple store, they use the eMac in the children's corner. They get a lot of use.

True. But the design is old. It was a good design, but it's been around since 1997 in one form or another. It's time for some new blood in the eMac line.

I was there Saturday, they had iMac's not eMacs.

The store did have ONE eMac. It was fully decked out, with Creature speakers and a keyboard for audio.

Introduced in April 2002 and dedicated to education, the eMac had an all in one form factor like the Lisa of 83 and later Macintosh computers such as the 512k of 84, the Plus of 86 and more recently the LC's which stopped being shipped by 96. The iMac, which came out in August 98, marked a return to the consumer market with the familiar form factor in transparent, sculptural plastic.

The eMac and iMac have been designed respectively with utility in mind on the one hand and consumer seduction on the other.

Problem is the eMac is anything but seductive anymore.

When was the last time you saw anyone fawning over the eMac?

Yesterday, actually. My brother thought the all-in-one CRT model was a thnig of the past since the iMac's went to the lampshade/G5 looks. He is a PC user with a crapola monitor and is tired of fighting the uphill spyware battle on his laptop and was asking me abuotmine. When I showed him it, he loved the design. He doesn't want to spend a lot of money, and the Mini isn't really what he is looking for.

The issue with a emac with a G5 is heat, i proposed you have a slower G5 (IE: 1.3-1.5) with a LCD in there for heat reasons, then just slim it up a little bit

I was just in the Mission Viejo, CA Apple Store yesterday, and there was an eMac there, much to my surprise. But all the "kid's station" computers were iMac G5s. Lucky kids! :)

So that means that the store has made changes since I visited two Sunday's ago. It definitely indicates that the title of this thread is true. I wonder what they did with the for eMacs that were at the Children's corner?

Apple US have same day delivery still...

Apple should make the eMac into an LCD. Now before you flame me, let me explain. The eMac design is out of date. In my opinion, it makes Apple look bad. Now don't get me wrong, besides being over bulky, it's a good design. It just needs to go sooner or later. It could probably last another year with 1 or 2 speed bumps, but I can't see it lasting any longer than that.
