eMac updates are expected as early as tomorrow...

ThinkSecret reported on 1GHz high end eMacs approximately 2 weeks ago with speeds ranging from 800mhz to 1GHz.

More recent supports suggest $799, $999, and $1299 pricing, hinting at a new model at the low end with steady pricing on the other two models. Speeds are expected to range from 800MHz to 1GHz.

A Page 2 article also suggested that new Apple updates are expected this week. eMacs remain the top candidate -- though Apple also has revealed that new music will also become available on May 6th. International support is expected to follow...

well, not many schools that I know of down here use eMacs, they still use the older and at the time cheaper iMacs

Mac 6th?

Let's rename all the months to match up with our favorite company. Next, June becomes "Jobs," right, then what?

Dang, you guys are quick about fixing things. Why?!? It's so much fun to mess with typos!

Well, I guess this means the CRT iMac will be officially retired, even from the education store. Or maybe they'll lower the price even more, to $599? That would be fantastic. Schools are so cash-strapped the prices really need to be as low as possible.

a 1 ghz g4 superdrive for 1299 or whatever seems like quite a deal to me.
this emac update might actually make me lean towards getting a cheaper emac as compared to the 17 imac.

well this is good to hear, even better if its tomorrow, my newspaper teacher is waiting to get some new emacs, we will see what apple brings to the table.

$999 for 1Ghz?

nice.

i'll take one please.

any word on whether or not it will include DDR SDRAM and the faster bus (133Mhz) of the iMac?

Great buy

The eMac has always been a great buy. I bought mine reluctantly as a cheap stopgap, only to be surprised at the power it has. It will last me a good long while! GREAT screen, surprisingly good speakers, even for music, and great looking too.

I hope you can BTO a CD-R or Combo for the bottom model--almost a necessity for backing up and sharing. Then that would be a really nice low end! And if you can afford the 1GHz + swivel stand (highly recommended) and 640 RAM... you have yourself a nice machine!

Adding TV out is really nice--I'd play DVDs that way if I could. I suppose the iMac will get that next time.

Are we missing something that might be implied?

You can't just give out a 1GHz machine at that low of a price with that many features.......it will cut into the iMac sales.......

Lower iMac prices? Updated iMacs?

If the iMac prices are lowered, then the PowerMac is a real bad deal.....new PowerMac pricing to clear inventory? new low-end 970 announcement?

Maybe i'm reading a bit into it, but you can't give away a machine equivilent to the top-end consumer machine without a ripple effect.......either of apple making an adjustment, or in customer's purchasing decisions.

While this would all be great, I don't think we'd see quite that big of a ripple on a random tuesday in May... too close to WWDC and other reasons, but mainly because that would be a pretty huge step for them to take without anyone (present company excluded) even having a guess at it.

I, however, wouldn't mind it in the least.

October has GOT to be Cupertino :D

You should check out Core Computers as 2khappyware.com.

Could this be the begining of a new price point? Could this be some of the steps we heard about to gain market share? Hmmm.... I like the sound of this.

Could this be the IBM effect? CHeaper chips means cheaper computers.

ANyone know if IBM is making G4s now that Motoslowa has given the go-ahead?

eMac, comes standard with iTunes 2

I was just looking at the eMac's on the Apple Store, and noticed they advertise it as coming with iTunes 2: "gives everyone easy-to-use tools for organizing and managing their entire digital audio collection"! Wow, now I can't WAIT to get one of these :D.

I wonder what new and amazing features will come with itunes THREE!!! Getting giddy just thinking about it . . . . . .

Um, you can and it won't if the 1 GHz machine in question weighs twice as much, is 5 times as noisy and has a 10 times crappier screen on it.

When the emacs first came out a year ago, I thought they were too good of a deal (by apple's standards) to pass up so I got one. A year later I have some mixed feelings. The screen is slightly blurry, flickers unbearably at its highest resolution and is hard to look at for a long time (like most CRTs in my opinion). It is pretty powerful and it was definitely a major upgrade from my lombard in terms of performance, but if I had it to do over again, I might have shelled out a little more for an iMac, or waited a little longer. As it is, I think I'm going to end up owning this thing for a lot shorter period (maybe 1.5 yrs) than I normally would keep a computer for (closer to 3 yrs).

Just a little warning before you get excited about 1 GHz eMacs.
