You make a good point about the iphone 4. However, like many people have mentioned it will be a two year old phone. Many of the new features will be geared towards the newer products. Like facetime over cellular, there has to be 4g in the next iphones..


Anyway, after two years I think it would be time to upgrade to a new phone anyway.
 
New hardware- business tactic

Apple is in the business of selling new hardware. Your (and my) iPhone 4 can run these features but might not do as well. Apple needs us to upgrade hdwe every 18 months or so, that's a business tactic that has worked for them. The JB community proves this hardware is capable update after update. I had 3G FaceTime on JB iPhone 4 as soon as it was releases using my3g app.
