Embracing the Notch: How Are You Adapting to the Most Controversial iPhone X Design Decision?

Really, cut into the display and park icons? Hmm. Unless I'm not understanding, doesn't sound too elegant.

well..

and no.. not cut into the display.. cut into the bezel and fill that with more display

People are very adaptable. Learning to ignore the notch is of course human nature to adapt to unchangeable things or their surroundings. The bottom line is that it was and always will be a poor design compromise between the different hardware groups. As a person who builds apps and is also a graphic designer, I hate the notch, its design compromises visually, and the work to work around such a silly and honestly lazy choice. Looking at one every day only makes me upset that the company with more resources than God had to allow such sh*&&y design to prevail.
For people who don't mind it, good for you.
For people that hate it, and know it's a bad design, vote with your wallet and do not buy the iPX.

You know design isn't just about how something looks, it's also about how something works. Face ID works really well and I'm fine with the notch for that feature. I voted with my wallet and bought the iPhone X. It's the best smartphone I've ever used.

LOL...there's only two choices:
A. Bezel at the top without extra screen space
B. Notch at the top with extra screen space
There is no coherent argument to be made that the bezel would be more functional than the notch. So it's purely an aesthetic issue, and also one where many people incorrectly believe that Apple requires developers to overlap live content with the notch.

When people say they hate the notch, this is the alternative. A comparison of a notch free iPhone X (with hidden sensor housing), iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone 8.

That looks weird because the corners are needlessly rounded, if they were straight across it would look more elegant. That is like a dumpy LG V30 :)

It's actually, "B. Notch at the top with limited extra screen space with limited use.

Notice how all the responses are "I don't mind" the notch, as opposed to "I like it". I don't think anyone actually wants it, but we can accept it.

The thing that drives me nuts is the alignment of the time and icons. They should be centered vertically instead of bottom aligned with the notch. It looks so bad and I can't believe more people aren't bothered by that.

I agree. Also, it's not just the notch that is the compromise. I'd lump the rounded corners in there too.

I'm also a developer, and in order to accommodate the ridiculous notch and rounded corners and the new "safe" margins they create on the X, I'm having to write the kind of code I absolutely loathe... if-else exceptions for one stinking device. So now there are these conditionals sprinkled everywhere to accommodate what is essentially unusable space anyway.

iPhone X is to iOS developers what IE was to web developers... the stinking turd you have to work around.

Which shows the bottom of the phone incorrectly, and would push the clock / status icons back into the regular portion of the screen, providing the normal bar of wasted space at the top of many apps and the home screen.

I like the display extensions on the X for those items. But, it’s a personal preference.

Don't like the notch. Looks like a poor design that doesn't flow with the rest of the screens, sticks out like a sore thumb to me. I know it doesn't affect the overall use of the phone although whenever I see it, I find i don't like the design and get a negative reaction every time I look at it. I don't think it's something I'll get used to, as is the case with any design that I don't like the look of.

That's fine, there was nothing wrong with the clock / status icons to begin with, no wasted space. The current guidelines required that apps build in a "safe space" for the new iPhone X design, negating that "extra" space.

Rounded corners removed. You'd appreciate it is looking sharper.
The notch is completely unnecessary.

Hmm… To me that looks pretty good. I have a hard time accepting the notch, but I haven't used the iPhone X, so what do I know. Of course it would be even better if it was ”all display”, but I guess that's difficult when you need all that Face ID hardware to be somewhere.

Don't like it, to be honest.

Looks boring and generic, and you're losing display area from the top and bottom of the device.
You're actually not losing any real space. Apps are required to build in a "safe space" for the new iPhone X design, negating that "extra" space.
