It’s an easy issue to get up in arms about.

It’s a non-issue if you actually own the phone (in my experience). Don’t even notice it. Minimizing, or multi-tasking, the screen image does *not* have a notch - almost creates the illusion that it is not there.

Due to OLED - the notch disappears in the kindle app (black background, 1MM:1 contrast ratio), and I *love* FaceId.

Of the available trade offs - I think the right decision was made, and it’s an amazing phone. The most exciting since I dropped blackberry and bought my iPhone 4. The larger screen on the 6+ was long desired, but this feels like a game changer.

Screen is tall enough to block notch from your eyes, people mostly who talk about notch negative way all the time are the ones who have never seen the phone in real life.

If you look photos and videos about iPhone X the notch is all you see. In real life when the phone is front of your eyes you hardly ever see it, landscape is different thing but i hardly never use phone in landscape so i can't say much about landscape usage.

I can't f***** stand it. It's hideous and it's the reason I'm switching to Samsung after 8 years of being a loyal iPhone customer. I don't want a notch eating into whatever I'm watching or doing, and I don't want to try and hide it. Honestly I'm fed up, calling the iPhone 8 "a brand new design" and even calling it the iPhone 8 is laughable, and the iPhone X which I had high hopes for has that stupid notch but MOST IMPORTANTLY it's the same width as an iPhone 7/8 so when you're watching videos they'd look the same as on 4.7 inch iPhones unless you zoom in, in which case you don't only lose the top and bottom off of what you're watching, but you also have that NOTCH eating into it from the side... I know this is not an issue to a lot of people but it's completely unacceptable to me. It's such a missed opportunity in my opinion. If it was a properly bigger display like say the 5.5" 7/8 plus display but without the bezels (or with minimal bezels), that would've been the most perfect portable device design. Instead we get this tall notchy thing... And why the hell didn't they at least have black bezels on either side of safari when browsing the web instead bright white empty space?

I like the notch more than I expected. In fact, it gives it a bit of a 3D effect - when a pic is zoomed under the notch, I like seeing that the hardware is ‘above’ the photo - almost like you could peek under the notch and see the hidden part of the pic. I know, weird.

I think MacRumors blows the Notch out of proportion more than anybody else does. The majority people I know that don't even frequent a tech forum and have purchased the iPhone X, don't even Speak of the notch. Either you accept it for what it is or You shun it altogether, simple.

So when you screen shot with the X, does the notch get included?

This happens...

Edit: Just noticed the very appropriate but completely accidental ‘home bar’ underline in that screenshot. The bar is annoying.

Given the question, I would imagine the feedback here will be largely positive - since it'll assuredly be self-selected towards individuals who purchased the phone, and people who are bothered by the notch won't be buying the X.
Given that thought process, I doubt I would see as much vitriol over the subject that I do in the iPhone and Alternatives to IOS section of the forums.

It is a polarizing item on the current iPhone product list & I have lost count of all of the rambling diatribes I have read on Twitter, iMore, MacRumors, and other sites over it. Many of which from people who have never held the device.

I understand and respect their opinions though, there are many examples of devices from Apple I hated in the past as well.

Well, they have to put the sensors somewhere! It's really a trivial issue. The phone is growing on me... but I'm still going to hold out for the next generation of it in 2018. Can't wait, notch or not.

I also look forward to a future version of iOS where they dispense with the bar at the bottom of the screen too. Unnecessary.

The only time the notch has been a problem for me is when I adjust the volume in Instagram. The volume level goes along the top of the screen and you can’t see what the level is unless it’s very high or very low. Any other time, and I don’t even notice the notch.

For me, the most controversial design decision is the removal of Touch ID.

We see how Face ID is problematic in many cases. Touch ID has none of those issues. I want an iPhone X with both Face ID and Touch ID.

"The Notch" just seems to be more of a distraction from the lack of TouchID than anything. Maybe they can figure out how to implement TouchID in the screen for next year's Xs model.

I just have no understanding of why there needs to be a notch. I'm sure it's fine but I can't see the point when we know based on Samsung's Galaxy S8 and Note8, that it isn't necessary?

After using it for some days, FaceID has actually less issues than TouchID to me.

I can use gloves, I can unlock with wet hands, and swipe up is way faster than the home button.

Yes, esp. the gloves thing. Never occurred to me until I had to pull out the gloves for the first time this season. It was so awesome to not have to punch in my code or take off my gloves for Touch ID. Apple should do an ad based on that.
