I had no problems installing Emoji Free on both my iPad (4.2.1) and iPhone 4. Once it's installed (follow the directions) all you have to do is add "Emoji" as a keyboard in settings.

I guess there are a lot of "secret" ways to enable it from reading this thread, but I went for the simplest possible method when I was tinkering with it a few weeks ago.

It was difficult on the original firmware for the iPad. With 4.2.1 it is now exactly the same as enabling it on the iPhone. Perhaps even another version back but I've noticed that the literal "Emoji" keyboard is now an option. 🙂

No problems "installing" emoji in my ipad.
Install any emoji app. Add emoji in the keyboard settings. A globe icon should be beside the space bar. Also, i don't use a japanese like other emoji app. It is embedded in the english keyboard.
Hope this helps.

I second that iOS 4.2.1 allowed me to install emojis no problem whereas 3.2.2 didn't work so well.

Emoji keyboard works on iPad w/ iOS 4.2.1

I can also confirm that the installation of the native Emoji keyboard works on the iPad with iOS 4.2.1. FTR, I have a 32GB iPad 3G.

Steps:
- Download "Emoji Free!" by Awesomest Software. It is listed under iPhone Apps (not universal..), but it works fine for iPad.
- Actually run the application once it's downloaded.
- The app will give you directions. Basically, go to Settings and enable the Emoji keyboard. For me, the only two International keyboards I have at the moment are: "English" and "Emoji."

Troubleshooting:

- If you've run the Free Emoji app and still don't see the Emoji keyboard in the Settings, exit the Settings app (double-click for the multitasking bar and close Settings), then open it again and the keyboard should show up. This happened to me.

- If you are able to add the Emoji keyboard, but the global icon doesn't show up on the keyboard, then you may need to exit the app you're using to test. For example, I was trying different methods and testing input in the Notes application. Once I finally enabled the Emoji keyboard, it did NOT show up in Notes. I had to exit Notes, then open it again, and boom - Emoji!

How To Use Emoji On iPad

Ok, so to use emoji on your iPad, just stop buying all of the apps, because the emoji are already there. To get to them, follow these steps:
1. Go to setting
2. Click on keyboards and turn on the Japanese keyboard.
3. When you want an emoticon in your message, switch to the Japanese keyboard, and type "emoji" Then, the emoticons will pop up in your keyboard.

I know it's a pain in the butt to use it this way, but thats how you have to do it for now I guess.
