My GPS shipped - it will be here hopefully by saturday USPS delivery. If not, it will get here by monday.

The gps unit is the size of a deck of cards. What you have to understand is that it is a really excellent GPS unit that supports 66channels and battery life of about 40+ hours constant usage.

When I get this all setup and video recorded, you'll see the beauty of this combination.

I'm not knocking on people who paid more for a 3G unit, but you just cannot compare an external GPS unit to the one that is built into the iPhone. There's NO COMPARISON - this external gps beats it hands down - but then again, i'll know 100% for sure when i receive my unit and get it all working together.

Navigon (though not built for iPhone) - should work with JB'ed iPad via roqyGPS bluetooth stack. That app will support a huge list of NMEA gps devices. Navigon, tomtom, even google maps will work with roqyGPS.

I'm doing this too, my gps should arrive today but only cost me 10 GBP.

If people have a nokia symbian phone with gps then there is a symbian app called Extgps that can share the gps via Bluetooth to roqybt.

It didn't work with my e52 though but should on other phones.

Please write a review here in this topic. I am very curious about it, but someone in Holland didnt get it to work with RoqyBT

My gps has turned up today, it's a tiny key fob sized Bluetooth gps with 11hrs battery life.

The good news is it works fine :)
I'm at work at the moment but I'll post a video review later on tonight.

You sure are hyping this thing up a lot for having never even used it yet.

I'm just saying. A lot can go wrong.

I am very interested in this. The only reason I am getting the 3G model is for the GPS. I have a couple of small BT GPS units which I would rather use as one of them also keeps it's own GPX track as well as acting as a BT receiver. However I am a little sceptical that this idea will work on all GPS applications for the iPad. A good test would be to try a number of apps like MotionX to see if these apps see an alternative GPS.

It's worked in every app that uses gps so far that i've tried which is,

Maps
navigon
tom-tom
Star walk ( without the gps my ipad digi compass wouldn't work in this app, now it does)
Puniverse

If you name some more apps I'll try them and show them working later

Can you try MotionX GPS thanks

This is a pretty awesome thread. I'm not a fan of jailbreaking simply because I like it when I -don't- have to do that, but if I can save $120, spend $60, JB and still use GPS, I just might be down for that.

It works :) I'll include it in a video later. I could in theory use it on the go along with my Nokia phone as a wifi hotspot if you want me to demo it outside.

No thats totally excellent news thanks. I have just dug out a Columbus BT GPS I have which I am going to try shortly on the wifes WIFI iPad that I have jailbroken. It it works here I might have a rethink about the 3G I was going to get.

Known compatible bluetooth gps list here

My receiver only cost under 10gbp so im pretty chuffed!

I am having probs running MotionX. It wont pickup the GPS. I have the stack running and can open the GPS window in the stack and see position etc so everything that end is working. But I kick off MotionX and it just sits looking for a GPS. (spinning red globe and weak signal). Did I miss something in the process?

--update--

It is working after all. In MotionX the coordinates are working and updating as I move. It appears that the status of the GPS isnt transferred so hence the spinning red (no gps) globe and weak signal. I suspect these aren't covered in the NMAE sentences that are transmitted to the iPad.

Does it work ok in maps? With mine, if i dont use an app that uses the GPS for say 10mins then my GPS goes into sleep mode and i have to turn it off/on again then open roqtBT again ( not sure i need to open it again but i have done so far)

I just edited my posting above. It was working just looks like GPS status isn't transferred.

you're quite right, it's saying low signal not locked on but it is clearly working. Sorry i didn't spot that when i quickly fired it up! I'm still playing while at 'work' :)

I was nearly in the dog house. I just mentioned I was having a rethink on the 3G version I was going to get and the wife noticed. I promised her this 16GB WIFI when I get the 3G one. I have had to reassure her in no uncertain terms this 16GB one is on loan from her till I get mine WIFI or 3G. Phew.

Which brand is it? Can you post a link?

Thanks,

So I'm assuming roqy doesn't allow you to "tether" the gps from an iPhone to your iPad? That would be so cool!

I have mine working excellent with jailbreak ipad and roqyGPS

I'm using a normal Bluetooth GPS

Software that work so far

GPS Drive
Motion X
Google Maps
Google Earth

Does it work with Navigon and TT? I read that when you are driving the GPS falls down and only gets up when Wifi spots are in the neighbourhood.

Hopefully someone can test this for me?
