Any links to reliable and quality gps units for a decent price? something ~30 would be sweet! Even better if it's from amazon (i have amazon prime)

Does it work with Navigon and TT? I read that when you are driving the GPS falls down and only gets up when Wifi spots are in the neighbourhood.

Hopefully someone can test this for me?

I turn it off my wifi, and only used the GPS, all programs mentioned before worked great except of google maps wich didnt load the map but it showed me the location.

No offense to OP or anyone else but if there isn't going to be a Jailbreak subcategory here, it would be awesomely helpful if people would somehow indicate that Jailbreak is required in the thread title. I sometimes end up reading through 1/2 the thread before realizing that Jailbreak is required. Yes, I had at least a suspicion that this was the case and yes, I AM nitpicking. :)

Not that I am against jailbreaking (my iPhone is jailbroken/jailbreaked/jailbroke/jailbreakered/jailbusted-out!). As for iPad, I am holding out for a) more reasons (like this) to jailbreak and b) an update or two from Apple. Not that jailbreaking could be any easier....

eTip, backgrounder is all the reason I needed to Jailbreak my iPad. it takes literally about 30 seconds to do so why not?

Also, note that this doesn't require a restore from a hacked ipsw or anything. It's like quickpwn/blackra1n

Have u tried navigon with the car moving. Navigon will do the route and pinpoint my current location but after that it will not move as I drive.
Tom Tom 1.3 won't even detect my gps signal from roqybt.

Here my set up
iPad wifi 3.2
Roqybt 0.9.8-3
Navigon 1.5.1
Holux m100. ( gps recievrer works great on my iPhone 3GS)
Signal from holux is excellent according to roqy on my iPad

Please help.

No, I know - and good point. Other than pure laziness and procrastination, I guess I have no good excuse. ;-)

Get a GPS for location services, a MIFI for 3G, a keyboard for typing, a bunch of cases for various occasions, a stand for watching movies, a dock for charging, a camera adapter to load photos, a cleaning cloth, put on an anti-glare screen protector, other accessories for your specific needs, and a big bag to put in all these things, and you will be all set.

Very simple, really.

LMAO!! Dude, that is funny...

In ref to the RoqyBT and external GPS receiver, I too have ordered a GPS receiver (Bluetooth) $34 for my iPad. I am jailbroken so I can use and have already downloaded RoqyBT, so in a few days I should get the receiver and report back with my findings on how good it works:)

I received my unit today - but late as usual - I hate USPS - lazy bastards.
(see very first post for images)

Anyway, took some quick photo - I did drive all the way home with the unit connected to my iPhone 3GS - one word: AMAZING PERFORMANCE.

SIGNAL LOCK INSTANTANEOUSLY WHEN STARTING NAVIGON. I did not receive one signal drop period.

I will setup a video shortly to demonstrate all of the kick ass features. One thing to note: the 818x even works INDOORS! I don't know how the heck it does this but it does get a clean signal lock of about 7 satellites indoors away from a window!!

I'm very happy with my 818x - I will test on iPad but preliminary tests shows that the iPad wifi has issues with NAVIGON; so I will test on tomtom software. On iPod and iPhone, it is PHENOMENAL. Worth every penny just to get a clean signal lock on the iPhone/iPod touches!

Here is a video of the QStarz Q818x bluetooth device hooking up with roqyGPS in an iPad.

COLD BOOT - which means you flip the switch on the GPS unit to NAV (on) - the signal takes ~30 seconds to lock.

WARM BOOT - which means you leave it GPS unit on or in auto on/off mode, it takes ~1 second to a max of 15 seconds (in my test runs, it took only <10 seconds) to lock on satellites for signal lock.

inside iPhone 3GS - navigon doesn't even look for GPS signal, it just locks in immediately. VERY impressive - I don't have a tomtom mount to test, but I can detest that this 818x is so impressive, I had a signal lock when the damn thing is inside my glove compartment and also INSIDE MY REAR CAR TRUNK!! It's that sensitive! Lock on is so fast and I never lost a signal during my 26 mile commute home!

Here is the youtube video of it syncing with roqyGPS. Once it is synced, just exit roqyGPS - you will see a bluetooth icon in the status bar but your normal bluetooth can be off or ON working in parallel to roqyGPS!!

Proof in the pudding?

Here is navigon detecting the QStarz bluetooth navigation unit.

Remember, this is NOT an iPad 3G - it is an iPad WIFI only model.

I've seen the great Hardware and the great software, and the you-tube video connecting to roqyBT. Even the start up video of Navigon on the iPad. But no one has yet provided proof that it is actually tracking while driving or at least moving with the iPad. I've heard some of the bloggers mention the roqyBT works on the iPad, but not actually working with the resident apps, i.e. Google maps, Navigon, TomTom. Can someone nail the proof so we can put this baby to bed? Thanks... Still waiting for my GPS receiver to come. Everything else is prepped and ready on my WiFi iPad.

Like I said in my post, there is some tracking problems with the Navigon - it does MOVE! When you select show map option, it will track your movements but it's quirky at the moment. This is on iPad only. I believe it has to do with the GPS data functions inside navigon since it is not designed for the iPad, I'm sure if they release an iPad version or an update, it may work flawlessly.

Google maps work just fine. You can mywi tether it with an iPhone and googlemaps functions great. So it has much to do with navigon and iPad itself. I will test out other navigation software and see what the results are.

If anyone wants to get a gps unit, this one is really sweet!
Made in Taiwan, NOT CHINA! That's already a good sign ;)

Thanks for the info Bro...

FYI, here is a very interesting video I found that reportedly shows the WiFi iPad connected to the TomTom car kit and running the Navigon app on the road. Guess you would have to break the carkit to modify it to connect to the dock of the iPad since it justs cradles the iphone. I have a TomTom car kit which I use with my iphone, but it's rather costly to destroy to try this out. Maybe I can find a used one and see if it works...:)

No problem man - I want to help you and others! :)

I did want to get a tomtom car mount and use a dock cable to plug into it and then into the ipad - but that would set me back $120+tax!!

I said screw it and checked out other options that lead me to this setup. I am going to try copilot - will report back soon!

:)

I agree...this is the cheaper route and honestly, I'm just doing it for the fun of it. I really can't see me using my iPad in the car while driving for Nav. It just takes up too much real estate. My iphone rocks for that using any nav software. But Hey! I love to tinker...:) Hopefully, as you mentioned, the Nav app makers will update their apps to run smoothly on the ipad. And when they do, we'll be ready...lol

Googlemaps has ZERO problems. Here's a very late night video I shot while driving by myself around town using my iPhone but with googlemaps running on the iPad WIFI using myWi to tether to ATT3G.

(sorry for bad video but you can clearly see googlemaps working flawlessly)

I didn't record the 4+ miles I drove without recording just to test out navigon and google maps.

Nice Work! Be careful driving and videoing...lol Braver man than me...lol
Nice to know that Google maps works...:)

Thanks - but I'm so pissed right now - i got ripped off by that scum bag matthias ringwald developer of BTStack GPS - the damn app is a real scam.

DOESN'T EVEN WORK WITH GOOGLEMAPS NOR NAVIGON (it doesn't even see the gps) while roqyBT GPS picks up the signals and relays to each app with ease.

I swear, this is the sole reason I would love to pirate all the apps - sort of like a try to buy - especially when this developer gives you a demo version which it seems to be working great - then when you are lured to buying the actual app, it doesn't work for *****.

Absolutely pissed...where are the good morals/principals behind making a product?!

You have said in a post above that Google maps does work. Even provided a video. Confused.

I said, BTSTACK GPS app is the ripoff.

roqyBT GPS app works 100% with the gps devices and with googlemaps/navigon (navigon has tracking issues but it does work albeit not 100%)

Sorry, I only knew about and tried roqyBT.

no worries - just do not, I repeat, DO NOT PAY FOR THAT BTSTACKS GPS - it sounds all great and ***** compared to roqyBT GPS, but it does not work for iPhone nor iPad. I got a $5 educational lesson.
