Anybody else see this article on Engadget?

http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/14/how-to-enable-multitasking-gestures-in-ios-4-3/

It shows how you can enable those 3 and 4 finger gestures in your iPad running iOS 4.3 for a $5 purchase of XCode. I'm downloading XCode now to see if it works on the first generation iPad as well. I guess Apple included them in the public GA of iOS 4.3, but just hid that functionality until the app developers have a chance to adjust to it.

EDIT: 4 and 5 finger gestures -- not 3 and 4 finger gestures.

UPDATE: Yes this works on the first generation iPad AND you can do this with XCode 3 which can be obtained for free with a free developer account (as LSUtigers03 and other posters have pointed out)

So a developer account is not needed? All I do is pay $5, hook up iPad, click one button and I'm in?

Or sign up to the free part of the dev program (link above from LSUtigers03), download xcode3 for free, and keep your $5 to use for something else.

is there a difference between code 3&4?
i'm downloading code 3, should i be downloading 4 instead?

XCode 3 would do the job. It's a free download at Apple site. There are already threads about the same

I love how people refer to the a secret. As if apple doesn't want us to activate them. It's all about marketing. If someone has a windows pc and sees his friend using the gestures and thinks "why cant i activate them on my windows pc" he'll sure buy a mac after some time.

Yeah, I'm probably going to enable this (by either xcode 3 or the impending jailbreak), but I'm concerned about what Apple is going to do in iOS 5.

Apple may release these exact gestures as is.... but I'm thinking that these gestures were only given to devs because Apple actually has other plans for them. Apple was only testing the gestures to make sure that 4/5 finger gestures worked cool with the devs apps.

I think some of these gestures will stay the same, but I'll bet you that at least one or two aspects of the gestures change to add new features in iOS 5 (widgets, notifications, multitasking UI, etc)

And when this happens I will have to re-learn the way I use the gestures, and then complain about how I liked it the "old" way more :p

This worked on my First Generation iPad just fine.

But but apple could't do that could they. I mean what about the children.

yep just read it and printed it for use when the new ipad arrives for my wife:D

I set this up yesterday on the new ipad, it is really nice. I figured out the four finger and five fingure gestures... What are the three finger gestures?

I enabled gestures on my iPad 1 using the free Xcode 3.2.6 download from developer.apple.com. Using the 4-finger swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar will save my Home button.

I installed Xcode 3 from Mac OSX install disc. But after I launched Xcode 3 I cannot find Devices menu. Where is it? I went to Windows -> Organizer, I cannot find it.

Just an FYI-

It is possible to enable them using a PC with VMware. A little complicated, but possible. I didn't know anyone with a Mac :(

None -- I just had a typo and put "3 and 4" instead of "4 and 5" -- sorry.

Can anyone see if the twitter app updates?? I enabled the gestures last night and my twitter app (the official one) doesn't update any more, wondering if it's the twitter app or the gestures or coincidence.
