I can see him sitting there with the camera in his hands, i dont know what you guys are talking about, face it glossy looks nice (to Apple fanboys) and matte functions nice (for professionals). Get Owned. End of story.

So what kind of "professional" are you? And what group of "professionals" gave you the job of representing them? Because I don't recall voting for you at the meeting.

I want everyone who claims they know what all professionals need to post their portfolio site, like I do in my sig. That way we know you have at least a little bit of cred on the subject. It still won't make you right in an objective sense, but it will at least separate the grumpy codgers from the deviant art tweens and the spread sheeters who just like pretend.

I prefer matte over glossy and I wouldn't consider myself as any kind of "professional". When I am surfing the net, I really don't feel like seeing myself. I am hideous as it is, mirrors tell me that. I don't need my laptop to tell me that also!

Wait a minute! Spread Sheeters need love to. Besides ...... people with businesses love us around this time of year and we sure can use the extra screen real estate while working in Excel or Numbers '09 (if you're into that kinda thing) ;)

Spread Sheeters for Glossy '09 :apple:

im really curious about the viewing angles of the new 17" matte version.
could anybody do a quick test with a picture and look at it from the right-left/up-down and tell us how far its viewable in angle? roughly..

Here is a glossy picture. This is a fully lite office with windows and big lights overhead. Who can spot the glare? Can you see me standing behind it with the camera? I can't...nor do I ever see myself.

Ditto, I haven't noticed the glossy reflections or anything mine too

If your theory is true, then why does Apple, a Multi Billion Dollar company only produce a range of "Pro" Machines in glossy format (The 15" Macbook PRO) Go Figure, now please, go get "owned".

I work in an office with 12 other graphics designers, all of us use Apple machines and yet not one of us has a Matte Macbook or Macbook pro, (other than the iMacs), so are you saying we aren't professionals?

Your usage of the word owned shows me your probably some teenager just wasting time "trolling".

Go here and tell me that you dont see yourself. http://www.digitalhive.org/login.php?returnto=/

Or try watching a movie with a lot of dark scenes. Just a few days ago I watched an episode of "LOST" and literally in the dark jungle and the dark scenes.. i was truly "LOST" in the glossy screen. I wanted to see Kate and the other cast members.. not myself in every other scene!!

Thank God I have a dedicated Sony Bravia xbr6 hdtv. And not a samsung (also glossy) is another issue itself but I wont go that far.

Sadly, Apple has turned from appealing to the "professional" to more like the "consumer." This is why the 17" hi res mbp which begins at $2799 with the mac pro desktop are really considered "pro" machines.

Pretty much they are targeting the consumer market as they have the biggest sales. Notice that since 2005 and back, Apple has never sold any notebooks with "glossy" displays. I guess the consensus tells them that the consumer division does the best in business and attracts the most customers.

On the other hand, I know some graphic designers that prefer glossy because of the over saturation effect that they prefer. Because to some professionals their reasons for glossy displays are that it matches the final work that comes out rather than the less saturated look of the matte displays. But I honestly believe this to be true back with ccfl backlighting but not anymore with the led backlit matte screens.

Ha ha ha! Consumers are buying high end $3000 laptops? Really? Are you kidding or what? Netbooks target consumers. Apple doesn't even make those.

Yes they do, as a choice.

Nope, it looks like something they rushed out the door without thinking it all they way through. It should either have a grey outline like the Air, or a black bezel to match the rest of the lineup. It really looks like one of those White MacBooks that someone swapped the keyboard from a black MacBook and then took a sharpie to the edge of the bezel..

Whatever helps you sleep at night. Enjoy your parts-bin looking machine.

15inch MBP does not have the matte finish. Otherwise I'd sell my current one and get the the unibody 15incher.

Funny I thought the black finish was something they rushed out the door without thinking it all the way through. Matte has been around for years, and that design was definitely not rushed out the door. They've merely reinstated perfection back into a flawed product with the latest MBP 17

I guess there is no way to convince a fanboy, if they released the silver on black matte, everyone will cheer for them and scorn people who say they wanted a glossy display over it. I'm simply waiting for Apple to come to their senses and give pro users a real choice.

15" mbp tops out at $2489 with a student discount its not $3000. This is why I said the 17" mbp now with matte option (probably for the professional graphics designers) and glossy for the consumers that like the "ohh pretty shiny look."

And the Mac Pro desktops as being pros as well.

Dont even bring netbooks into this conversation because it wont hold up. You can also say that pdas and micro pc's are consumer level products as well.

Also, I consider a $5000 Alienware gaming rig desktop a consumer level product, so a $2500 fancy laptop for the consumer is very realistic.

You keep using the "pro" word. Portfolio site please!

Definition of a professional would help to. What do you consider a pro since you keep lumping tons of people into the consumer bracket?

I consider "pro" to anyone whom really need color accuracy for graphics design or rendering contents to make a living.

Basically someone who uses their machine to make a living and solely relies on their machines. Not someone who just buys their notebooks just because they "like" it or "prefer" it for hobbies on the side. Someone who "needs" it to make the $$$ to pay the bills.

I can tell you even though I prefer the matte and like the expensive models, I fit in the "consumer" area as I dont rely on my machine to support or make a living for myself. And its just a hobby/toy for me.

And basically for the consumers (thats me) I prefer matte and there is nothing wrong with glossy either. Its the same thing as customers who buy professional photos where you can get them in glossy or matte as well (I was in the photo business for a while).

Does the matte version have the screen covered by glass, or is it plastic?

Would be interesting to hear if there's any difference in the rigidity of the two screen types.

From what I know so far, the matte screen and its bezel is exactly the same as the previous gen mbp (no glass over the actual screen itself).

You don't know what you're talking about... stop.

$5000 gaming rig is a consumer PC? I had to stifle a chuckle there.

Some netbooks have the best screens for a graphics designer. Apple has just changed their business plan, the 15inch MBP is more or else considered more like a 15.4inch macbook rather than the pro and the only real pro laptop is the 17 inch.

I hope eventually the Macbook and Pro lines are merged, and each one is given a pro / consumer treatment (ie, you can stick matte 13.3 screens on a macbook)

Uh huh, a $5000 gaming rig is for people who play games for a living???? And dont even say that those gaming rigs are made for professional graphics designers and such because those rigs are targeted towards hardcore gamers.

Anyway you've just repeated exactly what I've been saying from the beginning, the 15" mbp has become the consumer product and the 17" is where the professionals can be had along with the mac pro desktop.

Okay, Apple needs to seriously consider getting that matte finish on the 15 inchers.

is it just me or does a silver w/ black outline look so sexy? It looks way more professional than just a plain black screen.

Now THAT'S a pro computer.

And please, those with glossy screens stop pretending to be pros. You guys are obviously of the Macbook crowd. I've owned many glossy screens and it doesn't come close to any matte screen I've owned.

Well aren't you just quite the little professional? Way to go Mr.Smarterthanme! I wish I had as much knowledge as you do.

I'm contemplating on the 17" mbp with matte screens now but I always think in the end.. its still only a TN panel...

So basically you are talking about an area you don't know anything about. You are not a "pro" yet you can define "pro" and speak for all "pros". Why do you even care what pros need if you aren't one? Why do you have an opinion?

You see, I'm not here to proclaim one screen type better than another. I just like the conversation to be logical and I don't want people pretending they are what they are not in order to sound more credible. It's just sad.

Maybe Apple needs to release an official definition of what a "Pro" user is.

I consider myself a "Pro user" because I use this computer 14-16 hours a day and this computer is how I make my money. I love the glossy screen but according to some people that makes me not a Pro user. :(

If you play games for a living you're a professional gamer... not a regular consumer.
