I unfortunately have.

Hmmm. I just switched from them in January. I liked their price plans and their network (which I think was better than AT&T). They just have (had?) no decent phones to pick from. I changed only for the iPhone.

Well the good news here is Palm only has a 6 month exclusive agreement with Sprint.
If it does well, they could offer it to other carriers.
I think that will benefit Palm in many ways.
("In six months, however, that could change as Sprint's exclusive rights to Pre expire.") - Fortune

Good. I can't wait. I'll be looking at this next year then if it makes it to AT&T. By then, it'll probably be a little more polished. This is not a knock to the iPhone (I love mine), but Apple's paternalistic attitude is kinda growing stale.

Why is a Palm Pre Review link under the iPhone Forum?? Shouldn't that be under news or something. I don't care about a Pre Review.

Because it is considered a legit against the iPhone. Why did you click on this thread then???

Funny, I learned about future features of the iPhone today. You know, pretty much anything the Pre does better...those are things Apple will certainly be trying to do in the future.

So now I know what some future iPhone feature are whereas you don't know.

I said 'Funny' because I'd think that you, as an iPhone forum user, would want to know stuff like where the iPhone is headed. But I guess not.

They [Sprint] just have (had?) no decent phones to pick from.

My girlfriend has been looking to upgrade her phone for the last six or so months and cannot find a single thing that she likes. I've been window-shopping with her, and haven't seen much of anything on their network that has caught my eye either. This one, however...

In addition, to all those saying it sucks that the Pre can't do voice and data at the same time...it wasn't that long ago that the iPhone couldn't either, but I'd agree that it is a bummer. :)

It looks like Palm gave it its ALL with the Palm Pre, in order to save their company. Hopefully the Palm Pre will save it...that has yet to be seen, but it looks like it'll sell quite nicely.

They needed to do more. All of these so called iPhone killers are merely catch-up devices. If the Pre had been released a year ago, then Palm would be in better shape. But the Pre is basically the same as the current iPhone only with hardly any apps and a limited SDK.

Now Palm has to catch up to the app store. That will take at least a year. That's another year for Apple to develop even more new stuff.

The company that kills the iPhone will have to offer something radically better and radically different. My money is on that company being Apple.

I gotta admit, the Pre looks pretty hot.

Here's hoping 3.0 has some tricks up its sleeve (not to mention some speed boosts).

Agreed. While I'll am an unabashed Apple fanboy and will be getting the next iPhone, I think the Palm Pre is interesting. However, these reviews are often far from objective. The true reviews will come when people own the device. The consumer will ultimately decide the fate of the phone, not the pre-release hype (see what I did there?).

Exactly. These reviews are NOT objective at all from Engadget, Gizmodo, BGR...they all hailed Android as absolutely amazing and the G1 as very good when it's a crummy device with an OS that is not that good yet. I cannot wait to see what consumers say about the Pre when they finally get it in their hands. I don't think you're going to see the majority of consumers care for this while they want the iPhone.

I want multitasking already. It's annoying waiting 20s to get back into beejive every time.

PCMag?

very good review, especially the videos. i'm very impressed with the pre and i'm glad palm has decided to come up with such a device to compete against apple. i really liked their multitasking features, it's a step up from apple's lack luster solution of the home button. nice also to see the bottom area is touch based (like the ipod scroll wheel).

Yet you cared enough about it to comment about something you don't care about.
Hmm... a paradox maybe? The plot thickens.

On topic, I thought the review was very well done and while I didn't really want to jump to Sprint, the review made the Pre very tempting. Plus I'm a sucker for pretty UIs. Yeah, pretty geeky I know.

Still not real consumers.

Any of these reviews are NOT going to be worth reading and basing any opinion off of. They may have used it for a week but they have not found the nagging issues that drive consumers away. Every phone has them.

And I bet PCMag is full of enough people who are just so set on the device being huge and great as much as Gizmodo and Engadget.

They said the keyboard is flimsy-feeling, lacks predictive-type, and is pretty difficult to use compared to most other hardware keyboards.

So just to be clear, you don't consider that a nagging issue that will drive consumers away?

I don't like the material used for the keys. Looks kinda rubbery sticky type. If anything, I'd just stick to a Bold keyboard.

That but major parts of the OS that people will hate. I want to hear from real people, not tech bloggers.

No voice and data at the same time? Lame.

I think that is the cause of Sprints network though.
Yeah plus no Visual Voicemail due to Sprint's infrastructure. Gonna bite them in the arse when AT&T and Verizon gets the Pre next year.

ugh...

CDMA tech is the limitation to data/voice. Why do people keep thinking its just Sprint?

And Sprint has visual voicemail on the Instinct....so its not a network limitation.

Excellent post. And so true. We have already seen a taste of the behavior.

I for one think the Pre looks excellent. I will probably be in line Saturday morning to buy one, and if all goes as planned will post review if anyone is interested, that way you can all get a "real consumer" perspective. I am a loyal Apple customer, and promise to be subjective as well.

I've wanted an iPhone since it's original introduction 2 years ago, but I'm now sold on the Pre. Also, gripes such as visual voicemail will most likely be addressed in future OS updates, and there are also rumors of a video recording app as well. As was said above, the instinct has visual voicemail, so it's not a network limitation...

IMHO, to argue that it doesn't look like and feel like a solid phone is utterly ridiculous. I've played with an unactivated display model, and it has good weight to it, solid build quality, and a small, but usable and well built keyboard. It's no iPhone "killer", and nor will any phone be. It is however a solid competitor, which even for you apple fanboys should be considered a good thing.
