I loved how in one of the videos he advances the track via the mini player in the notification area while in card view. You can see the media player app change (which party extends off screen) within it's card in unison with the mini player. Very slick.

The company that kills the iPhone will have to offer something radically better and radically different. My money is on that company being Apple.

Nothing is going to "kill" the iphone. But nothing needs to in order to succeed. A palm employee recently said that smartphones are currently 21% of the cell phone market. That leaves a LOT of room for Apple, Palm, RIM, and others to all succeed without having to cut each other's throats.

Exactly, thanks! Finally some reason and sense with a lot of the children and fanboys around here. Nothing can kill Apple. Also, Apple has not killed or even punched a dent in the finances of RIM, MS, or Google. There's room for everyone to play.

I love my iPhone 3G I've had since day 1, and all I heard was how superior Apple products were. I lived through a terrible launch and I remember very well how terrible 2.0's firmware was until about 2.1. Looking back at 1.0, I don't even see how that iPhone was considered a smartphone. Palm is releasing a very feature capable 1.0 device that is looking, so far, rather stable. Something Apple couldn't do on their 2.0 release. With stability already in place, Palm can focus on OTA updates that will add features. I just hope it won't take Palm until 3.0 to add some basic functions like video recording.

For me, anyway, it's mostly about the web browser. According to results Palm's browser is superior to Safari. I remember on my iPhone how I couldn't visit more than a few websites before I saw Safari crash on me. Apple has come a long way over the year but their fubar'ed 3G launch is still fresh on my mind.

I mean its true.

The Palm Pre is the biggest/most hyped phone since the iPhone.

And reviews looked like (for the most part) it delivered.

As long as the new Palm continues bug fixing and pushing updates.

It'll be great options for people looking for a smart phone.

The Android reviews also claimed it delivered. Consumers said otherwise.

Um...

What consumers?

The phone sold pretty well. Just cause it didn't push iPhone numbers doesn't mean its not a success on its own right.

I expect HTC Magic will do even better.

What? The G1 sold great. The goal isn't to surpass the iPhone or any other phone, it's to sell enough units to make a profit and please shareholders.

The G1 is on T-Mobile, which is still a bit less than half as large in subscriber base compared to AT&T. The G1 also has sold well and I haven't met anyone who has one that doesn't love it.

I can flash random Android images onto mine, whether they be the most recent development branches of Android or customized ROMs for yet unreleased Android phones. The hacking community is really robust and is quick to provide speed, stability, and functionality updates, as well as detailed layman-friendly instructions for installation(though really it's all the same once you're used to it, update.zip in root of sdcard, Home+End while booting, Alt+L, Alt+S, Home+Back to reboot when it's done).

Once you're on 1.5+ you don't even need to wipe your data, like system settings, contacts, apps, etc. when you upgrade to a new build. It's totally painless, and even if it wasn't you're syncing to Google so you could bring back your PIM stuff over the air in a few minutes.

And all I've talked about is the software, don't forget the G1 has the best keyboard ever. A number row? Dedicated period key?(Blackberry doesn't have this!) Dedicated comma and @ keys? Customizable keyboard shortcuts for launching/switching between apps? Every symbol available, from Pound/Euro to pipe, tilde, backslash, brackets, and curly braces. Not to mention being perfectly sized and spaced, and having good tactile response. It's also a great slider mechanism, the weird arc thing is weird, but it means it's easy to open and close while nearly impossible to open or close on accident.

Like I said, I haven't heard a G1 owner say anything bad about it, and pretty much all the complaints levied by reviewers on release are solved in any decent 1.5+ ROM(auto-rotate, pdf reading, video playing/recording, multitouch). People love to say these new mobile platforms will get better with time, but so far Android is the only one that actually has. I hope the Pre(and iPhone) is as lucky in the end.

It's amazing how close-minded so many Apple extreme fanboys really are. It's truly stunning.

Also, it's funny how often many of these same Apple extreme fanboys are all getting their "panties in a bunch." Why is that? Is it maybe b/c there's something that's actually good that wasn't developed by Apple?

Folks, I'm a big Apple fan and have been for a looong time (just look at my join date on MacRumors), but some of you folks really need to take a chill pill and OPEN YOUR EYES.

At least one good thing can be said about the Pre that even the most EXTREME Apple fanboy has to agree with:

Pre beats the cr*p out of the iPhone on notifications. Totally and completely. PLEASE APPLE FIX THE D*MN NOTIFICATIONS.

+1. I hope that maybe Monday (or at some point during the 3.0 OS life time) that there is an upgrade/overhaul to the notification system.

The Pre kind of reminds me of the original iPhone launch. I expect it to do well, and like others have stated, competition is a good thing. If I was making the transition to a smartphone today as I was back in '07, the Pre would definitely be on my list of phones to consider.
