Oh, dear.

I have a feeling that later this year, we will not see iPhone 5 or 6, but rather iPhone 4SS, you know, an even further enhanced iPhone 4S.

No shock here, I've been saying no to the metal backed iPhone since the fake pics started rolling out. You've got to know your audience here. Apple doesn't move backwards. Aluminum is the past, and glass is the present/future.

My only caveat being, liquid metal. I'm sure they are trying to build some transparent, indestructible metal, but I think that will be down the road a few years.

My prediction is a tougher, thinner, iPhone4 like appearance.

And instead of making iPad covers, the accessory they need to perfect are wireless headphones. Think less like the ridiculous white bluetooth headset they made for a few years, and more like the little CIA type things undercover agents put in their ears on TV! They need to be almost invisible (to everyone around me AND to me), make them a pair so one in each ear, and then I need some ability to toggle between hearing whats going on around me and hearing nothing that is going on around me. And while your at it, they need hi fidelity sound to showcase the new HD audio format coming out! Without something like this, its going to be hard to bring Siri to the iPad and especially the Mac.

Make it happen Tim!

Those pics were based off actual iPhone 5 design(s). There was an iPhone 5 with an aluminum teardrop back a la the iPad and iPod Touch. However the LTE/GSM/et al broadcom chip was a major battery hog which lead to the 4S being released as a backup until the LTE issue was manageable. Hence why so many case manufacturers risked even more than usual on pre-emptive iPhone 5 cases lol (sucked to be them). Siri was announced to us iOS developers as initially available for the 4 model, but that quickly changed when the 4S became the device released and Siri was made exclusive to the device for sales. (and it worked)

(negative vote for this? LOL ooookaaay :) )

A possibility? Oh dear. :(

Bigger screen means no Retina which I for one do not want. Want a bigger screen, all you have to do is jump into the fandroid church of enlightenment.

That may be. But in this age of high tech devices like smartphones and tablets they really do need some kind of protective gear given the fact that they are expensive.

Even so with all that emphasis on design, you would think they would think about you not having to cover them up to protect them...

I want a smart cover with better positioned magnets. My black leather cover is fine except, if the closed cover slides even a mm or two, the pad awakens, and this happens very often as I hold it while carrying.

Glass backed iPhone 5? Ooohhhh I can already here the millions screaming NNOOOOOO

I have never had a problem on my iPhone 4 but then again I have managed to not drop it more then 4 times and onto carpet, once onto the kitchen floor but it survived fine, thank God!! Still I was looking forward to a liquid metal back. But if they use Gorilla glass for the back as well as the front it may not be as bad?

No one complained about glass when the 4S came out.

I believe the back is already gorilla glass

Amen

If the "glass back" rumor is true, that's unfortunate (really am looking forward to an aluminum back, AKA mini-iPad). On the other hand, if the "larger screen" rumor is true, then I couldn't care less what material the back is made of...Apple take my monies! :D

What a stupid idea indeed

Glass backed portable device was one of the stupidest ideas, ever.

Based on my experiences with multiple iPhones the glass is far more durable than the old plastic backs.

I'm not saying that having experience with 5 iPhones in my house makes me the ultimate expert, but I am saying that for ME it worked out great so I'm glad they did it.

It's not gonna be an iPhone 5 because it's the 6th phone in line
Idk why people keep referring to it as that but naming it that would be stupid and not happening
iPhone 6 simply doesn't sound nice...
My guess... iPhone 4G
Yeah it might be confusing with 4 4S 4G
But it makes perfect sense with it being the first iPhone with 4G LTE

NEXT One is iPhone 7
That sounds nice:)

I guess he/she thinks 37M people are sheeple who buy anything Apple comes out with.

I still love the iphone 4 design so a refinement on that would be great.

If apple make a smart cover with rear protection i hope its as well as the normal smart cover. I dont want a back shell bulking up my ipad. I just applied a clear best skins ever skin to the raer and the ipad is kept perfect with minimal bulk.

I understand the concern people have over the glass and plastic phones.

But come on, now. We've had aluminum-backed laptops for years and most of them seem to be going around naked. I'm confused why the general public (who was perfectly happy with aluminum Macbooks) is suddenly scared of aluminum iPads.

I know a LOT of people who have full cases for their iPads. When asked if they're going to buy a leather backing for their Macbook Air they just give you funny looks.

I really don't get it.
One reason could be the things are damn slippery.
Have you ever dropped a mug?
Have you ever dropped Corelle products?

The what, now?

Yep same here. My plastic back on my 3G was all scratched up to the point of being dull on back and had a crack on it (same level of use/abuse my 4 has gotten). The crack being one that was common to that design (coming from the docking port) and very well could have been one that would form no matter what I did.

My glass phone still looks nice and pristine :). Well lots of smudges I'll admit, but that can be cleaned off. Of course I try not to drop my phones period, anything with a large screen will break easily (That is true of the old iphones too, just you more had to worry about the screen and not the back too). And hell, least the back is easy to replace from what I hear.

I don't want another plastic back, apple does plastic crappily (my macbook also had cracks everywhere and I promise you that one wasn't from dropping at all, it was the regular cracks on the keyboard everyone complained about to the point Apple would just replace the keyboard if you complained). And unlike most people here, I think metal backs look kinda crappy honestly. And they dent and scratch easy so it's not like dropping them doesn't have its own issues.

You completely missed my point.

Have you ever dropped a mug?

Have you ever seen a ceramic knife? While cheap everyday ceramics (like your mug) is extremely brittle, yes, it's high-tech counterpart is a different animal all together. It can still brake but no more than the current glass back on the IP4. And only a diamond can scratch it.

The back is most definitely not gorilla glass as it gathers scratches easily, the front will hardly get any. Also no one complained at the time, but ask people now and I am more then 100% confident you will get a barrage of people stating the glass back was rubbish as it breaks easily again most likely because it isn't gorilla glass.
Glass on the back also adds too much weight IMO to the phone.

Kinda like the HP TouchPad case in a way.

Either way, the back needed some sort of protection...this should work.

Now the price.....

Based on apple previous pricing.. probably $79

I'll wait for the clone cases to come out

I would certainly buy a ipad 3 case wich works together with the smart cover this time. especially because the ipad 2 became uncomfortable to hold in 2 hours in my hands.
If its from apple themselfs im sure it would also look nice. Go apple.

But they shouldnt charge alot more. 79$ would be unacceptable. the current smart cover price is just acceptable.

I hate the glass on my iPhone4 . Smashed it once already. Now with 2 yr timeframes to be eligible for upgrades (on Rogers/Canada) people will want to have a device thats appealing with function and form.
Android is storming through the mass general public right now.

Please give us:

* Larger/better screen
* LTE/GSM/HSPA all in one
* User profiles !! ie. So I can have phone automatically move to slient mode during 9-5pm then go on ringer mode after those times.
