It's funny. I questioned the iPad 2's not-so-smart cover a few days ago and got downvoted. I asked why people bother with it when it provides no coverage for the back. The response was 'dont lay it on its back then'

I'd never not have a complete case covering my iPad. I'd be very disappointed if it got scratched! IMO a complete cover is the best option.

What about polished carbon fibre for an iPhone or iPad backing? This would look great and be lighter and tougher than aluminium or glass.

Also how about an apple cover or case for the iPhone (and I'm not talking about the bumper) something revolutionary like the smart cover was.

It's not gonna be an iPhone 5 because it's the 6th phone in line
Idk why people keep referring to it as that but naming it that would be stupid and not happening
iPhone 6 simply doesn't sound nice...
My guess... iPhone 4G
Yeah it might be confusing with 4 4S 4G
But it makes perfect sense with it being the first iPhone with 4G LTE

NEXT One is iPhone 7
That sounds nice:)
4G doesn't make sense either. Current 4S is already 4G.

If youre going to take the childish nerd rage stance of knowing better than all the carriers and manufacturers... then LTE isn't 4G either per the original old of 4G.

Consistency!

Doubt it could be as thin.

Covers are not a sure way of keeping scratches off the back of the iPad. I have a Griffin smart cover with a hard shell back cover and the dirt gets right in there, nice and sneaky-like. If you don't clean it out every few days the vibration and slight movement between iPad and case will scratch it anyway.

Thinner? The iPhone is already pretty thin, I'd rather they keep the current dimensions and just make the internals better or give it a bigger battery.

Agreed. Of all the things I would like to be improved upon with the next gen iPhone, I have never thought it is too bulky and needs to be thinner.

Why a back hardshell case? It doesn't make sense. Not only is the backing aluminum but the sheer size of the device would surely cause so much momentum that it wouldn't matter....

Well I use just a smart cover and take very good care of my iPad. But never the less, I have a lot of scratches on the back. A cover like this is NOT designed to protect the device from drops, but rather just from regular cosmetic wear and tear. Had I had something on the back of mine, it would be in total mint condition. Whatever cases/covers come out for the 3, you can bet that I will have the back protected.

I'm not about to smash a phone I basically live on for work and shut myself out for three/four days on purpose. Just saying it's a plus.

I just pay $15/month instead of buying a case.

What is that under? Your homeowners policy? What insurance has no deductible, unlimited claims, and replaces your iphone on a seemingly regular basis? Seems a little fishy.

I understand the concern people have over the glass and plastic phones.

But come on, now. We've had aluminum-backed laptops for years and most of them seem to be going around naked. I'm confused why the general public (who was perfectly happy with aluminum Macbooks) is suddenly scared of aluminum iPads.

I know a LOT of people who have full cases for their iPads. When asked if they're going to buy a leather backing for their Macbook Air they just give you funny looks.

I really don't get it.

This might explain it:

Marware already makes this.

See that's not bad at all. I love the look of the ipad and iPhone. Just as someone mentioned, Steve Jobs didn't know why anyone would want to cover up something so beautiful. I went with the same idea and got the smartcover and the Speck Smartshell (clear) for my iPad. I love this combo and they keep the original look of the aluminum best to me.

Having insurance on my phone makes the glass back ideal. Every once and a while I'll accidentally drop it, and since it's all glass 50% of the time it breaks. BAM - new phone. zero-deductible and no limit to claims. For once, Apple rewards the clumsy. :D

No wonder insurance premiums are rising.

Just take care of your phone. Simple.
I work in heavy industry, my phone has survived because I am mindful of it.
It's called taking responsibility.

He's paying the premium and using the policy as it is written. If the insurance company doesn't want to keep paying, they would raise his premiums and/or limit the claims.

As long as he is not willfully damaging his phone as he says, there is no problem with using the policy that he is paying for.

To me the original Apple iPad Case was the best case money could buy: Slim, functional and protective.

I wasn't too thrilled about the Smart Cover, so I would love to see a more protective case for the iPad 3. I don't want mine to have a back full of scratches.

The only problem is that I recall Steve Jobs saying during its presentation, that the Smart Cover's function was to protect the iPad 2 display without hiding it's beautiful design (well, something like that).

Being the above considered, for Apple to go back to a more covering case seems kind of unlikely to happen, but not impossible.

Macrumors is talking like an iPad 3 exists. In all reality, there is no such thing as an iPad 3 seeing as Apple has not announced anything.

MacRumors do this for every rumoured and yet unreleased Apple product. As soon as the first few rumours start rolling in. MacRumors just "expect" the product and act like it's already released.

This did backfire in MacRumor's face though. When they said there would be a 2nd iPad release in 2011. When Steve Jobs himself said "2011 - Year of iPad 2". MacRumors believed the rumours and not the then Apple CEO. And paid the price. That price being virtual egg on it's face for not accepting the fact that the Apple CEO knows more about Apple then some random from around the world does.

This iPad 3 case rumour actually is one of the better rumours they have reported. Better as in it makes sense. Something I cam see many iPad 3 owners buying and it looks pretty snazzy too.

Yes, but the premium rises for people who take good care of their phones / cars / computers / etc at the expense of those who are flippant.

I'm not saying that it's the case with this guy, but some people use insurance as a way out of being more careful. The thought process seems to be along the lines of "It don't matter, I'm insured.", and like anything, this comes at a cost for all.

Just pointing out the obvious.

Why does everyone keep callin it the iPhone 5? It will be the sixth one.

1 - iPhone
2 - iPhone 3G
3 - iPhone 3G S
4 - iPhone 4
5 - iPhone 4S
6 - Definitely not the iPhone 5.

Just because they didn't call the 4S the 5, doesn't mean it wasn't the 5th iPhone.

I would certainly buy a ipad 3 case wich works together with the smart cover this time. especially because the ipad 2 became uncomfortable to hold in 2 hours in my hands.
If its from apple themselfs im sure it would also look nice. Go apple.

But they shouldnt charge alot more. 79$ would be unacceptable. the current smart cover price is just acceptable.

Umm the CURRENT price for leather smart covers IS 79$

Have you ever seen a ceramic knife? While cheap everyday ceramics (like your mug) is extremely brittle, yes, it's high-tech counterpart is a different animal all together. It can still brake but no more than the current glass back on the IP4. And only a diamond can scratch it.

Hmm, I haven't heard of that before, I guess if they use that, it should be fine!

But I still think metal should be the strongest solution for the iPhone… If they polish it like the iPod Touch, it will scratch easily, but anodized aluminium with a matte finish should be pretty scratch proof, and strong as hell!

You completely missed my point.

Well I got your point...
I just kinda ignored it cuz I don't really agree
Or believe rather..

That's what I'm sayin!! It's like people can't count or something

Not glass again...

I actually love the glass. It makes the device feel extra silky and smooth to the touch.

As far as protecting the iPad, I have taken these tiny foam/rubber feet you find in the hardware store and stuck them on the back. They come in a lot of sizes and are used to cushin impacts of drawers and cabinets but must be thin so they are not noticeable. The ones I use are about 3 millimeters across. They are basically the same color as the aluminum so are barely noticeable (come in clear too). This allows me to enjoy the look of the iPad and never worry about scratching the back because it float like a millimeter above what ever surface I put it down on.

Because 5 comes after 4.

Anyway, who cares what number it is given? Really?

Then his insurance company should limit his claims or refuse to renew. Simple.

Didn't Steve say that the reason they invented Smart Covers was to avoid covering the back, which looks and feels nice?

I really like the current Smart Cover, it can easily be detached and it only covers the front, which is the only part that needs protection. So what if you scratch the back? It's made of metal! Plus, it's the screen you look at.
