The expression "rule of thumb" originated in Colonial America. It referred to the right of a man to beat his wife with a stick, as long as the stick was no bigger than his thumb in circumference.

Along with this is the fact that women were considered chattel. That is, possessions similar to the man's horse, cow, or dog.

Real nice history.

Boondock Saints?

There aren't many examples (that I know of) but the easiest example I came across during my studies is in the Theft Act 1968. There is a defence of genuinely believing you had the right in law to take/keep something, and that is regardless of whether that belief was true and whether the law actually says something else. One example is that some people think 'finders keepers' is actually law, when actually it's not that simple, but they could use that as a defence to prosecution for theft.
Really? did not know that ignorance is a defence, never learnt that in the law classes I have taken
T-Mobile literally means Telephone-Mobile.
Apparently it is Telekom which translates as Telecom in English... so you sure? :)

It's Deutsche Telekom which is the parent company of T-Mobile, because T-Mobile is Telekom-Mobile, and from my understanding the english translation of Telekom was Telephone, but you're probably right so I'll go change that.

Telephone is Telefon in German :)

Neither Humphrey Bogart nor Ingrid Bergman said "Play it again, Sam" in the movie Casablanca.

On the other hand, these famous lines were in the film:
  • "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine."
  • "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."
  • "We'll always have Paris."
  • "Here's looking at you, kid."

A sneeze is equivalent to ⅛ of an orgasm.

Eggplant is a fruit, not a vegetable.

There are 5 porn pages for every 'normal' web page on the Internet.

Less than 5% of the worlds population control 95% of the worlds wealth

Cats can't move their jaws sideways

An owl can turn its head 360 degrees

4 of the 5 people who designed the macintosh were left handed (ftw!)

Google was a beta until 2004

Equivalent how? Energy used? Pleasure gained? Moisture ejected from body?

I think it is presumed ignorance isn't an excuse unless there is express wording to the contrary, and there are few occasions where it is allowed. If you want to go into the details (because you are sad like me!) there are two separate concepts- mistake of law (like the Theft Act example I gave) and simple ignorance (like in SOS for Trade and Industry v Hart 1982).

We've only had 'proper' Google for 8 years?! How did people find things out before Google?!

False on the owl fact. They can turn their heads as much as 270 degrees. When they reach this limit, they snap their heads back to the other side so quickly that it looks like 360.

You sure about that one? I had heard that factoid, too - but then read it was a myth.

I thought that they turned their head so rapidly it appeared that it swiveled 306 degrees.

Please explain the physiology - spinal column, spinal cord. Why doesn't it break the spine and twist the cord.

In New Jersey, USA...

The toll road "Garden State Parkway" actually has traffic lights. And the toll road "New Jersey Turnpike" does not. I-95 is an interstate highway that runs from Maine to Florida. In New Jersey, I-95 IS the "New Jersey Turnpike".

- The term "Upper Crust" comes form Ye Olden Dayes in the Feudal System when the top part of a loaf of bread was cut off and given to the most prominent guests or people of the house. The serfs got the lower part, which wasn't as delectable.
