Influencers, that is the people with YouTube channels. I often wonder how many people they ‘influence’. Some people may watch but are they influence?

Taking on Apple who have a lot more money to spend on advertising and lawyers is a dangerous game.
everyone mocking influencers seem to entirely misunderstand that when someone possesses millions of followers, whether someone actually is "influenced" by them is entirely irrelevant. they have a platform, lots of people view it, so it's fantastic advertising opportunity.

these people get sponsorship deals, loads of free stuff, etc. just to talk about a product, and sometimes they dont have to do any more than just make sure it is within view during a recording.

but yeah, keep laughing at people who make truckloads of cash. (not necessarily you specifically)

epic's insistence on trying to get the community riled up about this particular issue is really, and i mean really pathetic. fortnite is still played on all of the other platforms it is on, they still get their purchases. tim sweeney apparently has to die on this hill crying about how apple hurt his ego.

he really should just keep his company on track with releasing unreal engine 5 and move on from this. an extraordinary amount of money is going to be spent on this fight to no gain; judges already ruled in favor of apple, and they will rule in favor of apple again as this was a plain breach of contract.

not to mention...they're sending this to people who seem to be in favor of samsung, or promote their products more, so why should they even care? and it's adorable how they continuously focus this vs apple when clearly the insert explicitly states this is a problem with Google as well who didnt put up with Epic's bee-s either.

so...is Epic lowkey also thus publicly stating that they think Google is a less relevant company than Apple...?

I don't get it. Seems so simple to me. Apple created an App Store and set the prices. You want to use our App Store and have access to our millions of users, our cut is 30%. Always seemed a bit high to me, but hey it's their ecosystem and they can charge what they want. Epic decides it no longer wants to pay that price. If you aren't going to follow the rules, you can't play in our sandbox. Seems simple. Epic... go cry somewhere else.

Apple did exactly thr same with their Airpod Max, gave them to influencers and reviewers but yet the bias is so obvious because this is an Apple forum that the practice of 'influencer' gets derided when it's Epic but nothing when Apple does it.
Yeah I’m not getting the put downs of the influencers here. I know in other discussions we often quote or link to the social media accounts of influencers and reviewers. I think the outrage against Fortnite and Samsung is just spilling over onto the influencers who may or may not end up showing off this “swag”. Let’s remember the influencers didn’t ask to be sent this stuff. They get plied with freebies all the time and some of them still render an honest critical commentary. It’s on the consumer to discern who is a credible source of information and who is a complete hack.

Their cause is so sad they have to try and buy some good PR.
By taking a page from Apple’s own playbook? Ok then.
I think this situation is both hilarious and heartbreaking. Hilarious in the way Epic is trolling Apple by employing their own techniques against them, and heartbreaking in that so many like yourself are so pro-Apple that they honestly think an open app store is some sort of bad thing.

I don’t understand people who make comments about how they don’t understand people.
I also don’t get the appeal of Fortnite, it’s a crappy game and not fun at all!
People can have their own opinions about what they think about things.
No one is saying they can't have their own opinion. I'm saying when you have a stupid one, expect to be criticized. Not understanding why other people like something you don't is beyond stupid. People like different things, you'd have to be pretty dense not to understand that.

I hope you realize you’re doing the same thing? Also people are in their rights here to have an opinion of someone else’s opinion.

You think I am an influencer? lol I have like 40 instagram followers. Don't get too heartbroken over your assumptions.

"Influencers" exist because there's no real word for "an individual who happens to be an advertising property." It's an awkward word, but works for now.

Probably not the best time, but I wonder if influencer and influenza have the same root
Yup. Same root.

"mid 18th century: from Italian, literally ‘influence’, from medieval Latin influentia (see influence). The Italian word also has the sense ‘an outbreak of an epidemic’, hence ‘epidemic’. It was applied specifically to an influenza epidemic which began in Italy in 1743, later adopted in English as the name of the disease."

If Epic held console-makers to the same standard, then maybe they’d have more of a leg to stand on. For whatever reason, they’ve decided they can get away with it on iOS.
You’re comparing a stationary device with a specific purpose (gaming/media) to the general-purpose computer that hundreds of millions of people walk around with every single day.

It’s also doable to sideload apps now, it’s just way more complicated than it needs to be and is more of a hacky solution rather than a legitimate sideload method.

Why not lock down macOS too? I’ve helped too many friends uninstall Mac crapware they manually installed. It would be a 300 IQ move for Apple to not allow people to download apps outside the App Store.

Does repping a competitor's products seem really like a good way to negotiate with a former (and potential future) business partner? Sweeney should give up at this point. It's pathetic. This is like taking your new gf/bf to your ex's job after they dumped you.

The only reason why the playstation and xbox are specialised gaming devices is because their companies made them that way. What’s stopping them from running microsoft office? Why can’t I download netflix onto my nintendo switch? They certainly have the specs for it.

I am not opposed to the idea of locking down the macOS platform the same way iOS is. However, because macOS started out as a more open platform, Apple likely would not be able to do this without attracting a lot of attention and criticism.

Conversely, the iOS App Store started out as being closed and locked down, so it’s easier to rationalise the status quo.
