Epic is promoting an absolutely stupid idea !

Apple needs "App Discovery" competition first & foremost, as it has three benefits:

1.) Enables App Store consumers to circumvent Apple's obsession with promoting Game Apps, Apple Arcade, & Little Kid Apps.

2.) Will drive down prices; competition "always" drives down prices !

3.) Will enable select third-party App Stores that focus on NON-Game Apps to blossom !

4.) Top NON-Game App Developers will be in High-Demand, with the best making ~$50M USD per year, just like top athletes here in the States.

Dec 9th could be the very-start of a (long-overdue) Renaissance period in App Discovery !

Apple is doomed, but Epic's strategy is flawed !

They want to be that mega monopoly and with it take down Steam which already does much of what they are aiming to be and have done for a while. Having one store to rule them all would make it easier for users to switch from Android to iOS and back on a whim for the most part, but you can do that without merging Google Play and the App Store into The (Epic) App Store.
It’s called the internet and it uses webapps. There is no reason for Apple to invest Billions into developing a platform that does not pay them their determined profit margin. The Old Apple nearly died before taking up this way of doing business when Steve Jobs returned.

They don’t have to share their technology with 3rd parties. They do it to make a profit. If it becomes unprofitable, they will kill it like a Newton.

Apple promotes what is popular in the market. The App Store lends itself to what people want. Apple does not care what apps sells. They just need them to sell. If productivity apps were all the craz they would be just as happy because they are more expensive.

Wasn't Steam kind of the defacto Game store that started it all, then every greedy gaming company like Epic decided they wanted in on the money and turned it into a complete mess with stores of their own.

"Apple must be stopped," he added.
Maybe he should just have stopped selling games for Apple devices and then not car about Apple at all?

Meanwhile…
  • Mobile malware on the rise with the number of new malware variants for mobile increased by 54% in 2018.
  • Third-party app stores host 99.9% of discovered mobile malware.
  • More than 250,000 unique users were attacked by Trojan-Banker.AndroidOS.Asacub malware application.
  • 98% of mobile malware target Android devices.
(Source: https://purplesec.us/resources/cyber-security-statistics/)

Apple is not perfect, Google is not either, but they obviously do a much better work than others to avoid malware in their stores!

And by the way:

'Fortnite Mobile' For Android Installer Allowed Hackers To Infect Smartphones With Malware
"The previously reported Fortnite Mobile for Android security concerns turned out to be legitimate, possibly exposing millions of Android gamers to malware.
Epic Games was said to be unhappy with how Google handled the matter, which happened due to the developer's decision to bypass the Google Play Store for the highly anticipated Android game. (…)"

50% of fake Fortnite apps on Android contain malware, spyware or adware - report
"Many of the Fortnite APKs and installers available online for Android have some sort of issue, according to a new report.
Top10vpn has tested 32 Fortnite Android apps, and found that over half of them contain some sort of spyware, malware, or adware.
These were just a few of the many results that pop up when you type "download Fortnite APK" in Google, or in the search bar for third-party Android app stores like Amazon's, APK Here, and Mobango. Of the 32 tested apps, eight had adware, seven asked for excessive permissions, and four were complete scams full of malware."

What I find absolutely baffling is the fact this man has not been removed by investors yet.

Corporate governance at Epic Games must be non-existent.

Sweeney calling Google "crazy" while on the other hand thinking about himself "I’m a Korean" really leads me to wonder.

I sort of see what he’s saying. I connect my various digital video purchasing services such as iTunes, Google Play, etc together through Movies Anywhere. Movies I purchase in one store are available in all apps, not just the one I purchased them in. It’s a great concept: https://moviesanywhere.com/

I would love a similar service for games. I own a number of digital titles across Xbox, Nintendo, Sony, Apple, Steam and GOG. Many of those games are cross-platform, but I’m limited to one device family to play many of them. I can’t, for example, play my Steam copy of Batman: Arkham Asylum on my PS5.

I don’t think it should be a single, universal store across all platforms. Let each store owner innovate and offer their own pricing.

Wasn't Steam kind of the defacto Game store that started it all, then every greedy gaming company like Epic decided they wanted in on the money and turned it into a complete mess with stores of their own.
They all failed and Steam became synonymous with PC gaming so much that the industry would refer to the PC platform as Steam which seems to have broken Sweeney’s mind leading him to speak in cognitive dissonance and ******** 24/7 and hatch some comic book supervillain plan to force every platform holder to have his awful Steam knockoff because keeping it exclusive to PC isn’t enough to satisfy his fragile ego.

The phrasing used by Sweeny is very manipulative: Sure, Apple might effectively have an indirect monopoly if you want to argue that an iOS user (aka iPad or iPhone user) is forced to only purchase software through the App Store. That is in fact the case.

But nobody is forcing you to buy Apple devices or forcing you to make purchases in the App Store, just as nobody is forced to go for a Samsung or Windows device and purchase through stores like the Google Play or any kind of other brand.

If Sweeny wins here then effectively no app or company can be allowed to have a proprietary "locked" software store for it's devices or operating system unless any other party can sell software through it, which is a ridiculous suggestion.

What Apple should be payed for its platform and services is obviously a discussion that should be had if app devs and consumers have complaints. But forcing Apple to change one of its core product philosophies (the "Walled garden") is completely unnecessary and anti-competitive.

With this reasoning, sites like YouTube or Netflix also need to be "opened up" for any advertiser or business who wants to do whatever they want with content and use whatever advertisers they want.

He doesn't care what's fair or best for consumers or smaller businesses. Sweeny just wants to take down a big competitor, that's all this is.

What a great idea, to have a single app store where everything is available. And then the same thing should happen with brick and mortar stores - we don’t need Walmart and Target and Home Depot, Best Buy, etc, when all the stuff could be jammed into a single store. Following this revolutionary shift, we’d of course want to do the same thing with restaurants, so you can get a Whopper and Big Mac at the same time, same place, followed by a Starbucks.

While we’re busy re-framing what we know as the retail shopping experience, we might as well take steps to create one single country with a single government, since that would be more efficient and give everyone better options for self-governance.

Sweeney is only doing this, making stupid suggestions, to keep the brand in the news, so I suppose I can’t fault him for trying.

Let's face it, Apple is using it's monopoly power to force developers to use their app store in order for them to install apps on user's phone(and have to pay a tax to do so). How Apple got away with this for so long is beyond me. Imagine if MS locked down Windows and Apple iTunes had to pay MS 30% for every music and app store transaction that occurred on MS windows. Woulda been unheard of. iPod may never existed and digital music downloads may be $1.50 per song vs. $0.99/each.

Bottom line, Mobile Phone OS is no different that desktop OS and the restriction imposed for owners of iPhones from being able to install apps outside app store is outrageous and can't last forever.
There is literally no difference between what Apple does with iOS/iPadOS/etc., being both the hardware designer and software creator of their devices, than Microsoft with the Xbox, Sony with Playstation, and Nintendo with the Switch. ALL of these platforms dictate what can be on their store fronts, and have the same style of “Tax” as the App Store to have developers, to sell their wares. Up until recently all of these platforms charged a 30% commission for the software and items purchased in their respective stores. ALL of these platforms charge a developer license fee. And let’s not forget that EPIC tried to bring a lawsuit to Steam for being monopolistic despite almost all of those games could be purchased through other means, but CHOSE to be on that service and pay the up to 30% commission because of all the conveniences the Steam Store provided. In reality the only difference between Apples products then an Xbox or Playstation, is in the proliferation of their products, with Apple having a lot more devices out in the wild then the other companies that make gaming consoles.

This would be an entirely different situation if Apple was using it’s influence to tell what android phone manufacturers, linux owners, or PC manufacturers what they can and can not do with their hardware and software (like what Microsoft did with IE). But being the ONLY manufacturer of these devices and the OS, there is an informed decision before purchase, there is a curated App Store, and that it’s developer platform comes with a Commission fee. Just like the Xbox. Just like the PlayStation. Just like the Switch.

Let's all move to Unity.

The difference is that phones have cameras, location tracker, and all these other sensors, contacts list, and other usage data that apps can request access to. PCs didn't have these. A sideloaded app can easily trick your mom and grandma to giving them access to these extremely private data.
Exactly this! Using a computer or an Xbox is a little different IMHO. Your phone is the most important computer/device that you rely on when you are mobile. You need it for so many other things than just a regular computer.

Imagine being out and stranded somewhere? Imagine all the information a nefarious crook can steal or use to immobilize you with. Being the phone is so important in everyday life (using at work, using for directions, using for sending money or accepting it) and can hold so much more of your personal/important data, I want it to be protected a lot more than my computer or Xbox at Home.

Some places need a better ‘walled garden’ than others. I have felt zero loss as a customer with the way it is setup now. I haven’t missed anything the way it is setup now. I’m sure Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft have to pay in all the stores that they rent space to have their products displayed. I’m sure they don’t get that retail space for free at Walmart or Target. It is no different than paying 30% fees to use the App Store to promote your product and to give you the tools to sell your product. If you don’t want to sell in their store and on their platform because you don’t like their rules, pull your app and sell it somewhere else.

Not every manufacturer of a product gets to sell their goods in Walmart. Especially if they are telling Walmart how little they should be paying Walmart for their product or placement of it. And how Walmart should be running their store. Hey Walmart, I don’t want to pay you for retail space in your store, and I don’t think I should be selling you my product at the price you want me to, and I also want you to start letting my customers use Apple Pay at your stores, so you can’t soak up all of my customers data. Give it to me for free. Not happening! So they go somewhere else to sell their product.

You can say this is greed from Apple, or you could also say trying to circumvent their store is a way for them to milk a little more money out of the customer and possibly having a terrible experience with whatever these developers have in mind to setup.

Epic only has interests for themselves. Not the customer. They know they have a huge following of ‘kids’ that they think makes them a powerful overlord, that will promote their agenda. Being 47, I remember the early computing days and the insanity there was with Windows’s malware and the nightmare that it caused. Having your computer locked up and not knowing how to fix it was a mess and still is, to a point. Etc etc etc. I don’t want this experience again with my phone, which is the most important information keeping device, and computer that is with me almost 24/7. No thanks.

The iPhone, for the most part has been extremely secure and hasn’t had any notable hacks that have debilitated their ecosystem. But that day can come, and will if you let moronic and greedy corporations tell you how you should run your store because it’s in their best interest, not the consumers.

I get so sick of hearing about all this crap and this is probably the only time I’ll ever comment about the sorry a$$ company that Epic is. They bleed money out of these kids with the most ignorant little ‘mini purchases’ I’ve ever seen in my life. Greed period.

The villains in movies, never thinks they are wrong in doing what they are doing or even the villain. They think they are right and justify what they do, or want to do. Power and greed has clouded Epic’s intentions for their ‘customers’. All they want is more money and more power. Just had to get it out my system. ? I back Apple 100% with this and nobody will ever change my mind.

I also own android devices and use them sporadically, but in completely different and limited trusting ways. I never put any incredibly important information into any of those devices. Just my two cents. <end of rant>

Would be correct if Apple actually had "monopoly power" in the market.
Comparing it to Windows which actually did have monopoly power (95% market share vs Apple at 20%).

Numbers are good for clarity...

Apple’s gotten away with it for one very simple and inescapable reason - it’s a better experience compared to the current paradigm on windows and yes, even macOS. Many people don’t actually hate walled gardens and for them, having everything in one central location is simply better in terms of convenience, ease of use and security.
