If there were multiple app markets or installation methods on iOS, there would be a distorting effect on prices. Price increases across the board would have to be implemented with greater care. Why this is considered a bad thing is beyond me, aside from the bad faith arguments advanced by Apple’s shareholders.
and absolutely zero security, which is not a "bad fairth" argument you are breaking security on the device by allowing that, just look at malware issues on android, Windows, and even macOS

Why can't I install on my iPad/iPhone what I want?
You absolutely can installed whatever you want, if you know how to.

Just like if you own a car and know how to install/replace parts (e.g. engine), go at it. Just don't expect the car manufacturer's help, just like you don't expect Apple to help you install whatever you want into a device you own. The car manufacturer or Apple has no obligation to help you.

Apple did not become a trillion dollar company by helping out it's customers when times are hard. Profits need to be maintained no matter what the cost. Could Apple soak up the difference in exchange rates, of course they can but would they? of course not. The situation in Ukraine has caused a knockon effect around the world and it is times like these that people look towards the multi corporations for help but instead of them helping people all they are seeing is the multi corporations increasing their prices.

Oil companies as well - for example.
Profits need to be maintained no matter what the cost.
Said every ceo for a publicly traded for profit consumer oriented company ever.

Surely we need a gallon of gas or a dozen eggs before a new iPhone. Didn’t see much help there. At least I can pay off a new iPhone.

Governments are supposed to provide welfare, not private companies. Private companies should be taxed appropriately to fund that.

His analogy isn't quite right... because the "tenants" in his example have the benefit of "clients" that have no where else to go... So I'm not sure its going to affect the App developers much, just the app users...

And when the apple car comes out, only apple can sell tires for it?
The apologists on MR insist that multinational tech corporations and their influence on societies happens in VR or something and don’t have any substantial impact on our economies or environment.

All while they’re each spending thousands on Apple products and services to every single year.

Fact remains that the ramifications of something like a 20% price hike on the AppStore are too big to let Apple decide alone.

The keyword here is “monopoly”.

But then on a side note, I wouldn’t really care much about what happens with pricing on the AppStore if companies like Apple actually paid all their taxes like the rest of us and didn’t move it to tax havens. But then your standard $0.99 app would probably cost several hundred dollars to compensate for their losses.

So many people here don”t get it. Apple is entitled to recover costs, they have zero say in the price set by the developer. What’s next? Minimum allowed price?. Although I understand the confusion as the EU operates as a quasi communist state.

Raising rent equates to increasing the current 30% commission, not forcing a price increase. In fact this is probably illegal under EU law as it is potentially a restriction of trade if the involuntary price increase leads to reduced sales. Class action incoming.

Apple has misguidedly applied a blunt instrument to fix their currency issue.
*tell me you’ve never been to Europe without telling me you’ve never been to Europe

weird how leftist used to be against monopolies and big business/govt taking advantage of people.
now days they're all for it, if it's a company or politician they like (or specifically don't like)
someone comes along and tries to offer an alternative and you guys turn into the most hateful bunch of man-children. lol

Tim Sweeney is like Kardashians; they do whatever they can to get back to the front page news even though no one wants to hear from them. The only difference here is that Kardashians do at least understand the basics of running a successful business - Timmy doesn't.
Yea, he totally doesn’t, it’s not like Epic has been around for decades or anything 🙄

The keyword here is “monopoly”.

Which does not apply in this case.

Sweeny would like people to believe he is leading some poor aggrieved business when what he really wants is to use Apple's services without compensating Apple.

Maybe a solution would be for Apple not to take a cut on subscriptions, but charge hosting and downloading fees for apps using the freemium subscription model; say $2 per d/l plus $1/month per total downloaded apps for maintaining access for their users. In addition to a per month hosting subscription fee. Consider it Apple's adoption of a monthly subscription fee to use its service plus a charge for items purchased by users.

People get mad a companies which take advantage of tax laws; much as individuals so as well, such as those who move out of their home country to another and need pay no taxes on income in either country. More ire should be directed to governments that devise such tax avoidance havens.

Well, that’s how it works for any other product or service be it MS Office, gym or something else. 🤷‍♀️ You either pay the new price or go away! No company will call you and ask “Hi! Is it ok if we increase our prices a little bit?”

completely disagree. When unprecedented situations occurr big corporations should look how to help out. What they should not be doing is basically saying 'Tough luck, here is a price increase'. Not everything should land at the feet of governments. The situation in Ukraine has created an unprecedented event, inflation keeps on increasing, interest rates keep on increasing, wages for the huge majority hve NOT increased and yet everywhere all the public see from companies is price rise after price rise after price rise and all they do is say 'sorry but it's due to inflation/interest rates/exchange rates, your going to have to put up with it'.

Companies are making huge profits but what is their advice to the public??, wear more clothing to keep warm, turn the thermostat down to save on heat, use candles instead of electric lights, walk to work/use a bicycle/use public transport to save using petrol/gas and so on and so on but they never offer advice that could potentially affect their profits.

Like I said, could Apple help during this time, yes they could but will they? no because profits must be maintained hence price increases for Europeans due to dollar to Euro exchange rate.

Disagree. For profit, consumer oriented corporations aren't in the business of giving their products away. That doesn't mean that one won't see special efforts by companies for charitable actions during times of special needs. Apple has been doing that for years.

Because they have given a helping hand, doesn't mean they should give their products away. I would be the first to criticize them, if the oil companies started the ball rolling and cut prices so I didn't have to pay $5 gallon for gas or eggs and milk weren't so high.

Nobody needs a new iphone or new android. If one needs a cell phone and price is a consideration, there are avenues to get less expensive models.

Sorry the Europeans are getting dinged by the exchange rate, it's the way it is at this time.

All that makes sense for stuff that is essential. The latest iPhone is not essential and is an optional, luxury purchase.

Why is he not just building is own smartphone and software and App Store. Stop complaining. It's apples business. Don't use it if you don't like it.

That is not how monopolies work. When you have such power over the market as Apple does (Along with Google/Android) you of course need to be regulated to avoid total takeover/lockdown.

I can't believe people think that for whatever that is a problem.

Apple is a power/money-hungry company who don't care about you, your values, or your ideals. They want your money. Full stop. Stop defending their greed over your freedom.

Apple doesn’t do anything to curtail my freedom.

Here's the thing - I don't think I am being taken advantage of by Apple.

If anything, it's the governments and the free markets who have failed to protect people from the practices of companies like Facebook, and Apple is the one actually offering us a choice and a say in the matter.
