Fortnite got more advertisement from this legal battle than they ever could have imagined...
I am sure their bigger user base are not on Apple ecosystem and they are trying to push them to other platforms where they don't need to pay the 30% cut.

So many angry Apple fanbois. Quite amusing how much the fanbois willfully and vehemently want to be ripped off by the richest company in the world. Guess what, if Epic wins, prices of apps will come down. And no, Apple won't go broke, nor will it close the app store, nor will it stop producing developer tools. All that will happen is that it won't make quite as much of an obscene rip off fortune off developers and users. It will still do just fine though. And it won't be just Apple, it will be a house of falling cards, bringing down prices on all the monopoly platform app stores. And a particularly good thing will be that the indie developers will be able to survive and flourish much easier, bringing a greater wealth of ideas and apps to us users.

The use of “fanbois” undermines any point one tries to make.

If epic wins, prices will not come down. Prices are already dirt cheap on the App Store. Most apps are free, and the rest are mostly priced too cheaply to allow continued development to be sustainable. Prior to the App Store, the average ”cheap” software package cost $30. Good luck selling much of anything for that price on the App Store.

wait apple collects 30 percent on microtransactions??

Yes, Apple demands to collect 30% on any revenues on digital items within an app downloaded from their Appstore, and prohibits linking to or even referencing a website or other non-IAP alternate way to purchase those items.

So for example Amazon can't sell books in the Kindle app, or even mention that books can be bought on their website in the kindle app, unless they give Apple 30% of the sale price.

Ignorance and fanboyism doesn't factor into FTC antitrust laws. Read FTC's strategic goal #2.

"2. Maintain competition to promote a marketplace free from anticompetitive mergers, business practices, or public policy outcomes"

When someone buys gas at a gas station, they're offered the option of paying cash without fees or credit with reasonable processing fee. Imagine if Apple operated a gas station, there would only be a 30% credit processing fee or told to take a hike if you inquire about cash option.

Why do folk like you always like to equate the 30% to a card processing fee?

It’s not. It has never been, nor will it be, a card processing fee.

Y’all been told this any number of times and yet you still persist in the fantasy that it’s a CC processing fee.

It’s a store fee for stocking, full payment management, global sales taxation processing, digital storage fees, and store fees. Along with a whole slew of ancillary stuff.

But it is NOT, I repeat, NOT a credit card processing fee.

I know this “CC processing fee” fiction y’all repeat plays into your chosen narrative, but you do yourself zero favors and you nullify your argument as a result.

Good grief...

I think the CCP is just upset that the court didn’t force Apple to bring back Fortnite into the App Store... Oh well 😂

People should get a life and stop spending so much time play "video games"! Bicycle, fish, hike, read books, educate yourself, take online classes, etc. Video games are for losers and make societies weak.

To me, it's fairly clear that AAPL may lose up-to 1/3 of their (projected) MacBook Air / MacBook Pro Apple Si sales, because of it; I'm just guessing, but I believe Gamers are the primary reason AAPL developed these two low-end Macs.

Firstly, no-one has any idea if they will indeed be low end - for all we know the 14x could be faster than current i9's and the graphics could trump a 2080ti - unlikely, but no-one knows what to expect.

Secondly the market will be what it always has been for MacBook Airs and Pro's - Students and business people needing a lightweight portable and for the MBP, those who need to do more processor intensive stuff on the move.

iOS apps being able to run on these devices is certainly a bonus, but will be down to the developers if they take advantage of their apps being truly cross platform. In some cases it may not be a practical solution to use certain apps on a desktop e.g. Apps that require the accelerometer or things like logic remote for example

At the end of the day, high end gamers will still use high end machines - its a tiny piece of the pie.

What many also seem to forget is that iOS has parental controls that allow parents (you know those with the $$ to actually buy a high end phone or tablet) controlling what their offspring spends on what can only be worthless in-game assets in the eyes of the parents.

Allowing all sorts of ways to buy outside of the Apple controlled space and you erode that parental control heavily.

So no: Apple's rules have to be strict (I'd say should be even more strict) and there should NEVER be an option to circumvent it's store as that closed system is a guarantee for the parents to exercise the last bit of control they have over devices their kids run around with all day long.
It's not just the money, it's also what those developers do with devices that are packed to the brim with sensors such as GPS, microphones, cameras, lidar, ... that should worry not just the parents but everybody having such a potentially privacy intruding device.

As to EPIC: please don't forget eh controlling stake the Chinese govt has and the ongoing "war" between it and the current US government.

40% is not a controlling stake of a private US company. Lot of company have international investors, does that always have to be interpreted as terrible?

Does anybody have a Good Estimate as to how many High-End Gamers will NOT be considering ANY of the upcoming iPhone 12 models because of this situation ?
None? it’s not like high end gamers relish playing games oh a phone screen (or they wouldn’t be high end gamers).

Some are saying that Apple‘s 40% of the US market gives it unfair control of the US, so I could see why they’d make the assertion.

"Due to our planned violation of the App Store terms we agreed to, Apple is blocking Fortnite updates and new installs on the App Store"

There, fixed that for you.
And also: “We have thrown in for free messing up the macOS users even though is not in an AppStore nor related to the iOS App Store in anyway. No bad deed shall come isolated on its own. Peace.”

Epic has come back to the courts hoping for some relief I see, this was in the Wall Street Journal on 9/5/2020:

The creator of “Fortnite” is taking another stab at getting a judge to bring the popular game back to Apple Inc.’s devices, this time disclosing that roughly a third of players access it through the tech giant’s App Store.

Epic Games Inc. late Friday filed a preliminary injunction against Apple, reiterating arguments made in a federal lawsuit last month when it accused the tech giant of monopolistic behavior after pulling “Fortnite” from the App Store. The closely held software developer also sued Google for removing the game from its Google Play store the same day.

Apple and Google made that move after Epic introduced an in-game payment system that would skirt the 30% fee certain developers are required to pay the companies for in-app purchases.

Epic said that more than 116 million registered “Fortnite” players have accessed the survival-shooter game through a device running Apple’s iOS operating system, making it the game’s largest platform. Of those players, Epic said 63% only play “Fortnite” this way. The game has 350 million registered players overall, according to Epic.

“Apple has driven a stake in the ‘Fortnite’ community,” Epic said in its filing."

Looks like full all the bluster and boldness the hit to their gaming has been bigger than they anticipated. I feel no pity for them given their approach and shenanigans. Had they gone other routes I could have more feeling for them.

I know many are saying Apple is outrageous and just making the game more expensive due to the fee they charge, but do we really believe the cost to the player goes down? I think not. They lowered cost in their store, but I am sure that was to make point....they will go for revenue like every other capitalist.

All the while, I was more than willing to believe that iOS is such a small part of their business that it didn’t matter. If this is true and not Epic Games fudging the numbers, then this would have been a very interesting strategy on their part. If 63% of the 116 million users are only playing Fortnite via iOS devices, then their latest season MUST be a financial dud as those folks are locked out of the new Season and it’s lucrative content. We should see an impact on the financials they release for the quarter if it’s true, so they can’t fudge the numbers for long.
