Chips is part of the innovation. Which drives what the OS can do, and how the cameras can work, and how all software written for it can perform and operate. The button itself isn't an innovation.

Linux has been free for a long time, and it's still not the popular OS for desktop use. There is plenty of development for Linux. Yet still not the most popular of OS's for desktop . That still belongs to Microsoft Windows. And correct me if I am wrong but they still charge for it. By your reasoning, Linux would cease to exist if Microsoft just gave away the OS.

It is not necessarily the price of something. It's what it does, how it works, and if it is worth the investment, etc.

IT IS. They already admitted to that. And Balmer famously stated the iPhone was going no where. THEY BLEW IT.

There was competition. Two companies survived, the rest more or less failed in that space. Or adapted to using Android, and or a derivative of it. You need to understand that point. Without that, the context of what you're saying is incomplete. And leads one to think either or both had something to do with being the only 2 in the west.
China could have their devices/OS available to the world "IF" they played ball. They want to spy. The rest of the world doesn't want spy's in every room. We would happily accept their lower price, high quality devices otherwise.

Yes, and people make money off of it. And the government would very much like Tik-Tok to divest itself from China and become a US owned company.
But the company is selling it as innovation plus a wee lens increase and they get away with it because of a few factors like only two choices in the west
Users who you language such as we are under attack from various different parties

Not anymore buddy
Because china has proved that the only way for a company to compete with iOS and android is by what they are doing because no other part of the world has done it.

Again it’s alleged that spying is going on ok
It was alleged of WOMD?

Again revision history what balmer implied is he was blind sided by the iPhone when it came out in 2007 but that doesn’t explain why when Microsoft launched a touchscreen line of mobiles in 2010 that no developer would build apps for it & ding ding ding because of its low market share so there was no point in developers investing money into that OS to get little returns
Hence the problem in the west
Unlike in china

And one of the reasons for that is if it’s an American company it’s for easier to turn the screw on them from the highest levels of government unlike a company from china

heartening in that there are so few. given the depth of industry knowledge and experience this is where you would expect the most complaints. and there are few...

like you, i seek out a closed environment because it largely just works. got tired of fiddling old Windows PCs for people who installed malware from email links or software they downloaded and didnt realise...

iOS is a good compromise between letting you add and extend function without most of the risk...
;)
Never in all my years have anyone I know ever has ever gotten or installed malware on their devices

Out of all of Apple's products. You can identify which ones were not successful. Or ones that faded away after being successful. Because none of us or Apple or any company can predict what will or will not "work". You can't be assured of any profit. All you can do is put out enough products that you do well enough to make a profit. So you can try again on something new, and of course. Improve upon existing successful products.

The complaining over how much Apple charges to operate on the AppStore. 30% etc. Has NO IDEA what it costs Apple to run the store. How much of that 30% is saving a startup developer so they can distribute something for free. Or how much of it goes into OTHER areas of Apple's business. When they have shareholders meetings and release their financials. You see exactly what was made where. Losses and gains quarter to quarter year to year. When you see the big number go UP. Many assume, well "Apple is making its fat greedy profits once again". While not looking to see where that money came from. Some areas are shrinking, some areas are growing. Mac Pro sales I'm sure are NOT growing. But, it maybe made up for by Portables or from combinations of speakers/watches/AppStore sales etc.

They could be making more money overseas and less in the US or vice versa. It's how we can even get a Vision Pro. Taking a shot at making something revolutionary that COULD very well FAIL. But, they are funded by other area well enough to take the chance on it. Like they took a chance on making a car. They may very well have failed, but it was funded by areas they made profits in. And who knows. Maybe one day they will come back to it with new eyes and ideas and have the ability to try again if they are still profitable enough to fund such a project.
Nobody is buying the Vision Pro because you look like a goon wearing one that’s why

People will buy iPhones regardless because they have a user base that use’s language like we are under attack by epic or whoever so that means that every year they can just put little changes into the iPhone

Whereas other companies don’t have the luxury of doing that this is why its different

Because the OS was bundled in the product... is there a standard procedure to remove the os?
but but but it's your device to do what you want.

so surely now you have the go ahead to do that, you can find a way to ditch the supplied OS... :)

i dont like how my Hisense C1 projector has a SPDIF port but refuses to output audio to that port as well as bluetooth or inbuilt speaker. I've reached out to them why they dont enable this feature like almost every other tv maker...

damn, guess i am going to have to write and install my own OS for it.

i think Hisense should make a system setting that lets me choose my operating system....

and my microwave. it dont like the way the knob adds cooking time in 30 second increments.
i want it in seconds. they should enable a setting to let me install another OS to it.

or my car... the text isnt big enough when driving. needs a nicer font.
they should let me tweak the interface how i want...

the simple answer if you dont like the device as it is, but something else that meets your needs better ;)

geez you need to talk to people more.

there was a nice little link to a Happy New Year fireworks animation a few years back.
Everyone at a uni loved it. clicked on the link. added a virus that required full system reinstall.

PCs are notorious for these things. you know that.
do you not use email? Never seen a phishing one?

there's not a single IT professional who would agree with your statement.

People have replaced the firmware of 3D printers, vacuum robots, ... so maybe a new firmware will be available for your microwave!

I don’t give my email out to unscrupulous companies without doing research
And if I do get a dodgy looking email I hit delete
If it’s too good to be true then don’t click on the link
Never had malware
And family members who own android devices don’t get viruses because they don’t do dodgy things (hint hint)

Your mobile or PC don’t just get viruses or malware it’s based on the individual’s actions

This has also been my experience.

I did have one family member get phished two years ago, but it had nothing to do with malware or installing the wrong thing.

As someone who did tech support on a college campus in the early 2000s, I can assure you that you don’t have to be “just clicking on sketchy links” to get hosed.

Android uses that sideloading are 80% more likely to get malware than those who don’t. There’s significantly more malware on Android that iOS. Those two facts are very closely related.

People posting on MacRumors need to remember that most of the ~2 billion iOS users are not sophisticated users who post on tech forums and know what API calls are. They’re grandmothers and busy parents and kids. Forcing Apple to open up is exposing all of them to negative consequences because you can’t be bothered to buy a device that meets your needs.

you miss the point, you dont even have to give your email out to dodgy companies.

the virus email went around the uni by one person getting it and forwarding it to all their work collegues.
But you know that too. Most businesses now scan attachments. For good reason.

How odd that someone so keep on loading any software they like, which you can easily on Android devices, havent had an issue because loading anything it key to getting viruses and malware. LOL.

I've seen way to many people get viruses on devices because a friend forwarded something, a child went to a dodgy site or they believed a site was trustworthy when it wasnt.

Even apps like Temu cause people headaches trying to stop the constant emails and offers because they innocently downloaded the app and gave away their email. Not a virus but so persistent to get out of their claws it can feel like it.

Then there's legit software that just doesnt want to let you go. Oddly, most anti virus stuff is hardest.
I've even got a couple of Mac software items that insist on loading upon reboot that I need to track down and remove. Ones some PDF viewer I must have tried...

So I wouldnt be bragging too much about being above a virus infection or tech inconvenience.
That's just arrogance ;)

Some forget Apple started iOS with a clean slate.
They wanted this to be a consumer device that just worked.
Without so many computer legacy issues.
Hence the walled garden.
Jobs even had to be convinced to open it up to app dev and wanted web apps instead.
Lucky for us, he saw the light on local apps and the billions it generated for a new industry.

PCs and Macs exist in a different software world.
The horse bolted long ago on installing controlled software.

At least signing software lets users be somewhat confident of the legit status.

Totally agree with you the vast majority of phone users are not tech heads.
And we need to temper our knowledge and desires with what they expect and need for protection.

I refuse to believe Apple need to open iOS up when it works for 99.99% of users and Android exists for those who want to install anything.

Perhaps we just start a GoFundMe to buy them an Android device?
Solve all of our problems... ;)

yes you are right a lot of mobile users are not tech nerds that is why they get viruses and malware on their devices
Because the click on something they shouldn’t or watch

So who is making Apple open up iOS
Is it individuals that are doing it
And if they are how are they doing it.

Complete bollocks.

These same people use computers all day long, including Macs, and have for years and things are fine.

Stop scare mongering.

No apologies necessary, but appreciate it.

We all have strong feelings about this stuff - and in retrospect the last line of mine was probably a bit much as well.

The last few cases of malware I got was legitimate websites serving malicious ads, and a legitimate site for a product I paid for was hacked and I got a hacked download.

Just because you are extremely safe doesn't mean you are prevented from getting malware.

Yeah you are
Because as said
The only way you get a virus or malware is if you do something silly or an individual does something silly then you get things like that
However it’s no coincidence that my advice is followed and not one person has had issues

Your device doesn’t just get viruses or malware because of no reason they just don’t randomly appear on your device
Where it be a windows PC
Or an android phone and that is simply not true.

Well I question more how you know this. Malware isn’t something that breaks your computer. It’s often something that is collecting information from you to either sell or abuse in other ways. It’s not the 90s with funny viruses or destructive Trojans.

Because my computer usage has adapted over many many years using various different devices and I’ve never had a problem and neither has individuals I know who own android devices.

Because it is scaremongering to suggest just because you use android or windows
Then you will more than likely encounter a virus or malware

Well, here’s an example. Notice how they specifically called out the brand of smartphone affected by this.

I don’t personally know of anyone either, but my local news cycle was filled with reports like this for quite a few months.

I have plenty more links to share if you wish.

Exactly that’s my point if a company is offering a to good to be true price
Then I would question it.

It’s the same as in my country apparently there is sim swap fraud
Where individuals call up and get your sim from stop working and bingo they can then get into your banking details
The article makes it sound like the individual can just get your number and call up.
However when you dig into the articles it tells you that the people who have been scammed have setup accounts on unscrupulous websites
Just like is mentioned in your article and then giving that website your information.

now this is just my opinion that since the smartphone has become really popular individuals are buying these devices or all age groups and not fully understanding certain things on it.

Point being - there are instances when a platform being too open is not really in the best interest of the end user.

You can either say “just be more careful” or opt for a mobile platform which is more secure and less prone to such things happening. Which in this case would be iOS.

What option would be left if iOS were to offer sideloading. How is that any better for this group of users who don’t need to sideload? It’s just an added risk for them with no upside whatsoever.

There are some benefits of the walled garden which simply do not get enough credit, IMO.

I don’t have a problem with payment links

Hey "buddy"... seems you know an awful lot about certain types of content (hint hint)... and are happy to throw around insinuations ;)

You seriously cant have been in IT long it you have never had malware or a virus.
Honestly. Within 30 seconds of you booting a new computer and connecting online there are devices seeking you out to exploit weaknesses. Software you buy or OS programs have weaknesses. Look at the regular maintenance updates that flow out for Zero Day exploits.

And all this happens no matter how careful you are.

And to admit you dont use any anti virus protection? Not even free?
More likely you dont KNOW you have dodgy bits of software on your PCs.

It's also a rather bold claim that you Android using family members dont have anything infecting them.
You arent monitoring and they can easily install something sent to them.
