Only parts I couldn't reach we're the upper and lower left hand corners. But you don't have to get to those corners very often

Yea like the back button in the top left corner; I don't use that very often. </sarcasm>

Agree with you there

Nope, I was able to get the note to rest on my hand easily and my thumb reach I'd say 90% of the screen. Only parts I couldn't reach we're the upper and lower left hand corners. But you don't have to get to those corners very often

I agree that being able to reach every point on the screen isn't necessary, but I'm still surprised with your ability to easily reach so much of the screen (do you have superhuman dexterity?). I'll concede that you're the one actually holding the phone though, so you'd know better than I would. I just don't think I'd prefer a screen that large.

Good find. Although, stating how good Apple's potential screen is by comparing it to that particular phone may not be doing it any favors. ;) all joking aside, interesting thread.

I agree, higher PPI (just a slight), on-cell tech, and different backlights make em incomparable without the new screen.

But that aside, this is comparing screen size and ratio, which I now fully endorse! :D Can't wait to try it first hand!

Looks totally workable to me.

I tried picking up this super huge android phone at the store the other day.

It was so big I'd need custom pants.

Don't buy custom pants.

if you buy custom pants, you will need custom shorts.

if you buy custom shorts, people will want to put their hands in your pockets.

when people put hands in your pockets, people think you are in a gang.

.....

Quick!

Someone with access to both the XPERIA Play and an iPhone 4S do photograph comparison of the top 10 apps!!

I agree with you there. WebOS gestures were the best...

I think that a gesture would imply that 2 fingers are involved, in this case it's no longer a 1hand operation.

I'm not asking for a phone that large (even though I'd love it), I'm saying that a 4.3" screen is the sweet spot. My point was that if I could hold a 5.3" screened phone in one hand, anything smaller is doable.

Based on the 58mm width everyone is reporting, it will be slightly wider than the current 53mm it currently is.

And based on the pics shown by OP, it will look great and I cannot wait.:D

Dolpin Web browser you can draw something like a < and it will take you back a screen. You can easily do that with your thumb

Yes but that would add a layer of complication to iOS in itself. One could argue that shapes could've been used in Mac OSX as opposed to the swiping gesture using different # of fingers, but I think it's just simpler in implementation and faster (debatable if faster depending on the symbol).

Then it's not truly a one handed device. :p

Wasn't focusing on if it was complicated. Only that you could do something with one finger

Ya the discussion was about one handed use. The Galaxy Nexus has an elegant solution to the unreachable back button - the back button on the bottom of the screen which works for pretty much every app.

One handed use aside, it's true that multitouch gestures are sorely lacking from the iPhone. Two finger swipe to the right to go back a page in the browser, how hard can it be?

I do love that little button...truly a universal back button

A simple gesture based deal would do wonders here. Not sure why Apple has held off with gestures on the iPhone. It's one of the tweaks I cannot live without.

Apple has made it a point in their design to value obviousness above all else. A gesture is not obvious.

except for the ipad or trackpad because that is somehow obvious right?

iPad has a home button, back buttons, etc.
You can operate OS X without gestures if you wish. ( dashboard button, mission control button, etc.) I think it's the F keys (F3, F4, etc)

They have never made gestures essential to the operation of their products. And they won't b/c gestures aren't obvious.

Although the obviousness principle applies more to the post pc devices. Everyone knows how to use PCs now.

If apple can add gestures to the iphone as an alternative to always using the home button (like the ipad), I would welcome it

Well then why has Apple been so insistent on 4:3 for iPhone AND iPad so far? Why is 16:9 all of a sudden better?

iPhone is 3:2, but either way, Apple must be feeling slightly embarrassed that they have the smallest high end smart phone on the planet, to this is their way of just getting their toe in the door of the 4" crowd without upsetting all the girls out there.
