In the past, we've worked with Apple as beta testers of the Exchange features which, if you do something other than FB and Twitter with your phone, are actually kinda important. I had what I thought was a reasonable expectation of doing the same this time.

Right.... So go back to whomever was put in charge of the testing process and they should be able to set you up. Reasonable expectations exist when someone presents a situation, not what happened a year ago. Wish you the best.

Actually, I did present a situation - I stated that it would have been nice for Apple to call out that Win iTunes wasn't an option for loading the beta OS. I'm fine with that decision, just would have appreciated having had the information before joining the program.

The "Beta" is meant for Developers to begin testing their apps and developing newer ones to be ready in time for the official release of 4.0. It's not meant for the average Joe to "beta test" the latest OS, hence why only "paid" developers have access to it.

If he paid the $99, then he has every right in the world to have his 4.0 beta installed and working on his phone, even if he's not a developer.

I can confirm that you can easily update with a Mac, I took my phone to work and had no issues.

Seems either Apple removed the ability to update on a Non-Mac or it's just a bug.

HOw can I get4.0 legally. No trying to get banned just asking. Please don't ban me. I want to get it legally I have. 3g but still wanna try some stuff out. I have a pc though.

Pay $99 to become a registered iPhone developer for one year. Go to developer.apple.com for details. You will need a Macintosh. And this lets you develop iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad software, put it onto the app store, or put it on up to 100 (or is it 200) devices of your choice. Note that iPhone OS 4.0 is a beta version. There will be bugs in it, including truly horrible bugs. Things can go wrong when you install it.

But why would you get banned for asking how to get iPhone OS 4.0 legally? If you asked how to get it illegally, that would be different.

No he doesn't! The $99 is not for anybody to beta test 4.0. It's FOR DEVELOPERS; developers have to have a Mac to develop apps. What part is hard to understand about that?

QFT. You guys need to stop acting like upgrading to 4.0 is going to make you the cool guy on the block. If you aren't developing there is no point ESPECIALLY if you expect to have 3.1.3 app support.

My phone is bricked too.
Error 13 is that you are actually not registered with a dev, so.

Does anyone know how to downgrade? :p

Guys,

It is possible, with much faffing around I have now done it under Windows.

The problem is that it won't install under Windows, error 13 is not to do with not being registered correctly.

I'm not sure if posting the info will break the forum rules, so check out 9to5mac where I have posted something which will point you in the right direction.

Once again, completely unresponsive to the original point - A simple caveat on the developer site explaining the situation with windows would have been appreciated.

Peace brother - FWIW I still think there's validity to having community input on the beta OS builds from as wide an audience as possible. Especially those of us focused on the Enterprise aspects where the iPhone acts more as client then server.

BTW - I did load it using a friends mac at work and then restored my settings from my laptop. So far, so good.

I agree. Don't forget that the people who are not developers are paying money to Apple because they can't wait for the new OS, therefore increasing Apple's profitability.

How they want to spend their money is up to them.

No, error 13, as established countless times in this thread, is that you are on a PC. Update on a Mac and you should be fine.

Walmart still lets you buy golf clubs, even if you suck at golf, or have never even tried it. They also don't care if you go throw all your golf clubs in a lake.

Apple is just out to make money. If you pay $99, you are instantly entitled to all of the perks of having a dev account, including beta testing 4.0. You don't need to be good at developing, or even develop.
