After being rudely pulled from slumber at 12:02am by a rather energetic and persistent 7.5 earthquake it's now 10:00am and I'm on my 3rd Indonesian Mandeling/Guatemala SHB blend, double roasted, double strength, full cream latte in a tall glass. Thick, creamy, warming and soothingly delicious.

That sounds rather good, I'm having a afternoon Rwandan FP.

I hope you enjoyed your coffee.

Actually, I have slept through earthquakes (I'd have failed the Princess & the Pea test, - rather comprehensively - I'm afraid), and sat through them, too.

Well, a coffee is richly merited, and three, even more so.

Two coffees this early morning; one swiftly consumed at home (Ethiopian, and yes, Yirgacheffe and hot), standing while the taxi reminded me that it was awaiting me; the other - a welcome double espresso consumed even more swiftly - and yes, - still standing - in the Victorian railway station.

Both welcome. Both very necessary.

A confession to make; I arrived early in the capital - having arranged to meet a colleague for coffee. The elegant 18th century pub I had suggested as a render-vous had not opened, nearby coffee shops had those tall, narrow, bloody stools - the ones designed by the sort of cool people who think everyone is an effortlessly slinky six footer who can perch elegantly on them, one leg languidly swinging; not this European lady.......(I'll climb or clamber under protest for beer, but not otherwise)....and, thus, with reluctance, we were obliged to seek refuge in a nearby Starbuck's - which at least did have decent seats, good service, and lots of space between tables.......

Starbucks....spacious seating...hmmm, how very American of you!

Sorry, I like my comfort.

Comfortable seating - with plenty of space between tables - I am misanthropic enough, introverted enough, and reserved enough - to like this. Especially if this social activity has been scheduled to place before noon......

Starbucks was better than the tiny, squashed alternatives - and time was a constraint. I had to be at place X by Time Y and coffee had to be sufficiently close for me to be able to make it without being more than two or three minutes late...

Needs must, and all that; any port in a storm and so on.....

Hehehe, oh I understand. I usually pick a corner but with my back to the wall. I like privacy, but I also like to be able to keep an eye on my surroundings.

It's a slippery slope.
Starbucks today, McDonald's tomorrow!

Starbucks is always my preference among the large coffee chains.

Now I know that @Scepticalscribe and @mobilehaathi also use this 'port in a storm', I feel my choice is vindicated.

Hehe, to be honest, the handful of times that I've patronized Starbucks in the last few years I've only gotten one of those caffeinated lime drinks. The last time I drank a Starbucks coffee I had a really nasty acidic stomach for the rest of the day.

Is there a particular drink that you like at Starbucks?

Vindicated? Not so much.

Going to that place, at least here in the States, is an act of mortal desperation.

o_O

;)
I think Starbucks in the US is a 'cheaper' and 'nastier' experience than in the UK. I know it's a US chain, but in the UK, they seem to have higher standards of decor, hygiene, everything.

I was quite disappointed when I visited Starbucks in New York, and DC a few years ago.

I, for one, don't worry about "the experience" (hygiene, decor, etc.) since the coffee, or at least the espresso, is a non-potable liquid. A nifty keen decor doesn't change that state of affairs.

:(:p

Mineral water; smoothies, double espresso - either in its purist form, or, as a macchiato.

Now, I cannot say that I "like" any of the drinks, but, you know, needs must.

In common with @mobilehaathi, I, too, like to sit in corners with a back to a wall.

Today, I was time constrained; the guy I was to meet - a former academic colleague I rate highly (we had cancelled a coffee scheduled for later - he attended one of the meetings I attended), wears glasses and usually runs late.

Thus, I sat facing the window - very unusual for me - as this business of two of us wearing spectacles and blundering about while I was pressed for time, and wished to discuss (what else? current affairs, thoughts, ideas) stuff in a compressed 40 minutes would not have appealed, and facing the window, I was able to signal him as he came through the door.
[doublepost=1479248746][/doublepost]Actually, clean decor, and bathrooms (rest rooms to our transatlantic cousins) do mean something to me.

It doesn't make up for poor coffee, but ubercool hipster places set my teeth on edge, whereas Starbuck's merely has me rolling my eyes.

Just picked up some fresh beans.

In order to confirm beyond all doubt my lack of palate and connoisseur status, I'll say that the coffees I like from Starbucks are their filter coffee, lattés and at this time of year, their gingerbread lattés. I find their cappucino acceptable.

I accept my pleb status in this forum (and I don't care :p)

I'll also say that for a large coffee shop chain, I think they do what they do very well.

Sigh.

Well, at least you do not attempt to argue the impossible - which is that they make good coffee. (Because they don't).

Their coffee is usually pretty awful (and I'll accept that it is possibly considerably worse in the US than in Europe, because in Europe, Starbuck's are operating in a world and in cultures which are genuine coffee cultures, and therefore, cultures that know the difference between coffee dross and coffee excellence. They wouldn't survive if their coffees were unspeakably vile).

However, if it meets your needs, and you like it, fair enough.

While - as on Tuesday - I will admit to having a double espresso macchiato - I will also admit that an unusual amount of (brown) sugar was added to this beverage.
