oh boy ... what a game!! absolutely wonderful work by the turks!

been supporting Croatia for a long time and can't wait to play against Turkey next .. Come on Croatia!

Turkey - Czech Republik was full of spectacle.. Expecially the end.. It might get tricky for Turkey now they don't have a real keeper for their next match..

So, now I'll be rooting for a 2-1 Austria-Germany and a 2-0 Poland-Croatia. I believe that will bring us to the "coefficient from the qualifying competitions for the 2006 FIFA World Cup and 2006-08 UEFA European Football Championship (points obtained divided by the number of matches played)" phase of tiebreaking (see section 7.07).

That's a lot of words.:D

and it would mean austria is out

on the other side if austria wins against germany this game will count more the title would... everybody/the media around here is so pumped about it, it's like having a second final in the tournament

The Netherlands is going to introduce some bench players tonight against Romania - but with the intention to win! And I have a feeling they will do their best to win, because these players are very motivated to show Van Basten what they're worth. (And they are no "B" players either!)

I'm looking forward to this game, even though we're already though.

The French media don't see it as "resting" they see it as a conspiracy to get us knocked out!:p

Hehe, I imagine they do. But unless Van Basten is lying, he made it very clear they want to win. Partly because he doesn't want to break the winning mood. It's a psychological thing.

Players that will rest either have a yellow card, or are vulnerable to injuries.

I think Italy and France should stop the whining, because it's their own fault after all.

And why should the Netherlands want Italy and France to get out of the tournament? They ripped these teams apart with 3 and 4 goals, so another semi-final against one of them should be in their best interest ;)

They're implying that the Netherlands deliberately lose their game against Romania, so that Italy and France are both eliminated from the tournament.
I've not read any such implication. Certainly not in the French press, nor in the Romanian press.

[Correction]
Pițurca has indeed suggested that it might be in Holland's interest to eliminate both France and Italy.

Still, that's not whinning.

Really? It's all over the news I read. Well, doesn't really matter. Just because you didn't hear about it, doesn't mean it didn't happen, does it?

Teams will look at their best interest and play accordingly.
it has occurred before and it will again that matches will finish "as expected" (remember the famous argentina-peru at WC'78 [6-0 to eliminate Brazil] or germany-austria at WC'82 [1-0 to eliminate algeria] or denmark-sweden at the last euros [2-2 to eliminate italy]?).

it doesn't mean necessarily that the result is actually 'fixed' in the sense that players were bought, but if the score goes in a direction that favors everyone, that obviously there is "less motivation" to change things. ;)

in the case of holland, they have nothing to play for, so although i am sure they won't 'try' to loose, they will rest some players, and avoid risking injuries or yellow cards.
And if the Romanians score first, i doubt they will go all-out to try to equalize.
Nobody likes to lose, but their goal right now is the tournament, not the game. And rightly so.
(it's not by chance that all the bookies have Rumania favourite for the game: motivation -or lack thereof-goes a long way)

On the other hand, since they will just go in to 'keep the momentum' with no pressure on, the dutch might just treat us to some wonderful football and an easy win.

Well, it's all in German, so I just translate this one quote of Domenech:
That's not whinning but a matter of fact. He's not the only one who thinks that România will beat The Netherlands, the majority of bookmakers do too.

Beside there's a big difference between having to be 'very optimistic' about the chances of The Netherlands beating România, compared to actually believing that Holland would just lose in order to eliminate both France and Italy.

Teams will look at their best interest and play accordingly.
I think The Netherlands will want to win, I have no doubt about that. I'm sure that every single one of their players will want to win.

But, România's desire to win will be greater.

The only complaint that is legit, if sterile now, is the idiocy of how the groups were sorted.

If you have to guarantee the host a spot in the final 16, you should make sure that:
1. you award hosting to a nation that would have likely qualified anyway.
2. you do NOT give TWO guaranteed slots for hosts, especially if they suck like austria and switzerland (easily the two weakest teams in the whole lot)
3. if you cannot do 1. and 2., as a minimum you should not rig the groups to try allow the two home teams an easy way through. seeding and grouping should be based on purely quality and balancing, not politics.

Seeing the reaction of players from both the Netherlands and Romania, I think it's quite clear that there was a sarcastic undertone in this quote.

And I wouldn't call it a matter of fact. Poland had to win, too, with Croatia only using a B-team, and they didn't succeed.

Well, perhaps the word "whine" was a bit harsh, but the fact remains, that it's their own fault after all and talking about how the other game could ruin their chances is just bad style IMHO. They should better concentrate on their own match.
