Good. Apple is wrong to ban one of the most widely used and accepted technology on the web TODAY.

If you don't like Flash, you can uninstall it. But why not have the freedom to choose?!

American companies have the right to be wrong.

you have the freedom to choose the device/ the OS/ whether to jailbreak or not etc. Nobody is coming to know at your door and make you buy or install anything

So you accept whatever Apple sells, good or bad? Of course I can go Android, (which obviously many people will), but that is not the point. I have a mac computer, so I'd like to use the most mac compatible mobile product. Why does Apple deny their paying customers freedom of choice? It stinks. It stinks bad...

I only know one thing....watching youtube videos on my mac is a ****ing joke!!! fffffFFFFFFFFFFSSSSSSSSSSSS Jailbreaks and HAckintosh is the future...I give a **** about this apple rules.

You know you have to hit the play button for the video to work.

seriously?? thats apple's right! how is there any ground to this investigation? they have no case, apple with NEVER EVER EVER EVER use flash on their iDevices (thank god). and if the EU doesn't like that, then they can ban iDevices, im sure the europeans will be thrilled. i like my iPad battery to last 10 hours, not 2, thank you very much. and yay im the first post!

LOL. Is it Microsoft's right to bundle IE with Windows and exclude other browsers? Look at how that turned out.

No one is forcing you to use flash. All some people are asking is to have the option of viewing flash content on their devices. Who are you to deny what others want on their devices, paid by their hard earned money?

All these kinds of regulations are a form of a shakedown racket. Either the threat of a regulation is used to elicit payoffs, or the act of regulation means that every election after that the politicians can come calling on Apple for money with the implied threat that they will turn the screws tighter if Apple doesn't pay up.

The nature of government is very much like that of the mafia. They claim its for "your protection" but really the group that will do violence to you if you don't pay is the government itself.

I am sure you felt the same way when the government went after Microsoft.

Thank you.

Flash was not originally designed to run on mobile devices like smartphones, so I understand the current lack of interest, but if, no, *when* it is redesigned to run on them efficiently, how will the anti-Flash crowd rationally explain its resistance?

I use it frequently on PC's and Macs (in Firefox) and don't have issues. But that's just me.

Apple occasionally denies its customers the "freedom to choose." Blu-ray? No. Matte screen on the iMac? No. Of course, you can go to other vendors, but then you can't use OS X. At least without breaking the license agreement. Nor can you use iOS, without jailbreaking.

The antipathy against Flash and Blu-Ray in the Apple community is strange - and pretty much unique to Apple users, which suggests at least some lack of objectivity.

I just don't get this. Denied the freedom to choose?! I have absolute freedom to choose. I can choose not to buy a device if I think it should do something that it doesn't do!

Every company makes choices about what options to offer as part of its service. Apple has made choices to include or exclude certain options based on its understanding of its martket and and the priorities, both tactical and strategic, that it wishes to focus on. If you don't like those choices then you are absolutely free to go and buy someone else's product.

Apple, for example, does not give me the option to buy a Mac with an AMD processor. I can't even install one if I want to. Does that constitute denying my freedom to choose or does it just mean that is what they offer?

Can we move on from this 'Apple should let us decide' crap? They do let us decide! We can decide to buy or not to buy what they offer us. It stuns me how silly these things can get, it really does.

On the other side of the coin, why aren't you upset with android that they are not more mac compatible? You look at the iphone and that it's not flash compatible, why not look at android and be upset that it isn't more mac compatible. Then you don't have to buy the iphone.

Nobody had a problem when the EU was going after Microsoft. In fact people here were praising the EU.

Big difference - MS were and still are in a monopoly position. Monopoly is bad for consumers. Apple isn't a monopoly by any stretch of the imagination. You're comparing two things that aren't at all alike.

Well, there are several reasons as to why Apple excluded flash from their iPhone. In one word: performance. Flash does several things, such as dropping the battery life, lagging the OS, and heating the darn thing up like a stove.

With your logic we'd all still have floppy disks and be on system 3 without a hard drive.

Flawed argument. When Apple dropped floppy disks, there were a number of available and better technologies on the market. ZIP drives being one. USB and the internet were breaking big and fast.

Right now, YouTube, Hulu, and other content companies are sticking with Flash and holding off on HTML5 for many reasons. Mostly, it's not ready and will not be widely compatible among various platforms for some time (if completely at all). Flash is here TODAY!

Here's a reality slap courtesy YouTube:

What's the monopoly on?

Apple is not about freedom or choice, just look at how many people want a blu-ray drive but are not even given the option to have one.

No its not as simple as that. This is a very closed-minded argument. There is always room for debate. If enough customers demand something, then they might get what they want. And you don't have to be a supporter of flash to see this.

There's a difference between "Customers Demand Something" and any governmental agency that force a company to do so.... nuances.

The best a customer has is the fact to NOT BUY something. Lot of people that just buy stuff because they can, probably don't even realize that anymore. It could sound close-mind to you, but it IS actually that simple.

When a company sells no product, it's the proof the product is bad and not welcomed by users. Then, they will listen users and make what the users want. If they can afford to live without listening the users, good for them...

I personally haven't buy the iPad. Why? Not for the flash... just because in my consumer point of view, it lacks the front camera to be able to do Skype (and now FaceTime). I'm sure Apple can live without my money... I will simply buy it when I will find the product good enough for me.... and not because millions of people bought it... period.

There's no need of any governmental agency actions for that. Do we need the CE to force Apple to include a front camera in the iPad? No... so what would it be different with the Flash?

So, I say it again (and actually just repeat what Steve said by himself): if you don't like it... don't buy it.

Hah, nice flip.

The other thing... everyone always seems to forget about all the great things the iPhone can do. Why is it always about how there's no flash, or that the antenna has issues. Besides those two things, what else is there?

Well, there are several reasons as to why Apple excluded flash from their iPhone. In one word: performance. Flash does several things, such as dropping the battery life, lagging the OS, and heating the darn thing up like a stove.

Flash 10.1 addresses all these issues. Steve Jobs doesn't want you to know about it though...

Lets be fair here...

Adobe needs to be investigated for being anticompetitive by not selling their own smartphone! I think Adobe is the one with the problem here!

On the other side of the coin, why aren't you upset with android that they are not more mac compatible? You look at the iphone and that it's not flash compatible, why not look at android and be upset that it isn't more mac compatible. Then you don't have to buy the iphone.

Give it some time they will investigate android when it gets popular.

I doubt Apple would let them be Mac compatible. Anyway android is cloud based or at least thats what google wants it to be. You sync your photos videos from your phone to Picasa and you can connect iCal to googles calender and have everything sync to your phone.

You can also drag and drop files/music from the PC (Mac or Windows) to the flash card. think of your phone as a hard drive.

Good. Someone needs to stand up to them. However, since iOS is the AOL of 2002, then I don't think it really matters. Apple has lost the fight against Android, and will be a marginal player in the mobile field, so as others have said it really does not matter.

All the matter is the winner in the mobile OS field, Android, has access to Flash.
Stand up to them for what? If you say Android is going to be the winner, than why punish Apple for making their own decisions if they're not the majority winner?

I don't think that the EC issue is with the browser plug-in, rather the terms of native app creation.

Still doesn't matter, Apple has the right to determine what tools developers can use to develop applications for their devices just as Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo does for their consoles.

The issue at stake here, is the fact that it is the user that owns the hardware. NOT APPLE! This is why jail-breaking is now legal because in fact you own the hardware and have the right to do with it as you wish.

What could end up happening is that the EC could force apple to allow users the option of installing flash ... just like they have on every other major platform.

You own the hardware but you do not own the software that runs on it, you only own a license to it. The only thing EC can do is tell Apple to open their hardware to other OS. Apple can not be forced to adopt competitor's software on their hardware. They can be forced to open their APIs to all competitors but they can't be forced to INCLUDE them.

As they say... the trend is your friend. The trend for iOS is down and up for Android. Sure Apple is having healthy sales now, just like AOL and their walled garden did ten years ago. In a few years time, iOS will be a marginal player in the field.

What trends? Sales, of course since Android is being used on all kinds of phones and all kinds of networks with all kinds of versions. Sales do not mean anything, Google doesn't make money off them.

There are over 100 million iOS devices on the market right now, that's a billion dollar industry already. Android market may catch up but it doesn't mean anything because it's two different markets that developers will take advantage of, it's more money to them.

If you took your time, you might have missed the first spot but you might have also realised that having the ability to display Flash doesn't mean that you would always have to. It's about choice. Apple Inc doesn't give us that and that's why we should welcome an investigation into the matter.

Besides, there are well-designed Flash applications and windows; and there are worse ones. Flash, if done well is actually a fantastic tool to create visually pleasing and user-friendly interfaces.

Even if you don't like it, as long as we have the choice, development will react and provide solutions to avoid Flash. All web browsers have plugins that allows you to avoid Flash content (such as advertisements that Macrumors has its main revenue from). Apple's mobile devices would enjoy the same.

You must either stop drinking or reading tabloids!

Apple does not have to do anything users want, it's up to Apple how they want to succeed or fail. If they think flash trancoded to iOS applications are bad, they have the right to decide that. They'll lose a lot of Flash developers and guess what, that's a loss to Apple in every way and they're willing to take it. You do not get a choice in how Apple should do their business. You are a consumer of Apple product, not citizen in Apple's business.

I heard a rumor that when turned off, smart phones will play Queen at low volumes. You have to listen closely.

"Flash! He drain everyone of us!"

LOL

Ok, that said, I see Apple's point of view on this. But I'm starting to disagree with Apple on this. Yes you can say you have a choice of choosing another phone or jail breaking the iphone. But users have a right to desire certain feature be supported/allowed officially by apple.

I think Apple should allow it but tell users they don't recommend it. When trouble shooting.

Users always have the right to "desire" whatever they want, those rights have nothing to do with what Apple can or cannot do.

No its not as simple as that. This is a very closed-minded argument. There is always room for debate. If enough customers demand something, then they might get what they want. And you don't have to be a supporter of flash to see this.

Companies do not have to do whatever their customers "demand". It's their right to say NO. People are whining because Apple has the balls to say NO to their customers.

MAKE FLASH A FRIGGIN' SLIDER BUTTON IN THE SAFARI PREFS FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!!

I can turn off JavaScript, Pop Up Block and Fraud Warning already!!! Why not add Flash to that list???? And while we are at it, make it OFF as Default!

That should make EVERYONE happy....

If you don't want it, LEAVE IT OFF!
If you do want it, SLIDE IT ON!

simple.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Javascript, popups and fraud warnings are all under Apple's total control meaning that every line of code is visible to Apple. That's why Apple can add those sliders, because they know every line of code and javascript is fully open which Apple can take advantage to make it secure and optimized on their devices.

That's not true for Flash, Apple does not have total control of Flash. Not to mention there are always security issues in Flash and Apple need to manually update the Flash often or so to protect their devices.

Apple has to spend money and time to maintain the plugin. There's a reason there's no plugins in Safari right now on iPhone. Why should Apple be forced to allow Flash when they aren't allowing any other plugins.

It's not simple as that.

The EC is very attuned to monopolistic practices. They went after MS a few years ago.

Somehow, they see the flash thing in that light. Apple is a walled community, often under siege by those who want to get in, and so there will always be these issues.

Wait until iPhones and other Apple mobile products are available on every network, available to far more people than they are now. Apple will be subject to more and more scrutiny as they gather more and more power and influence.

And? Apple did not force their way to get the power and influence, people are choosing to buy Apple products, not forced at gunpoint. It's a bit different from MS forcing vendors to have Windows or IE only.

Cue thousands of people returning their phones. Wouldn't do Apple much good if the guys at the stores had to say "Oh yeah, Flash will screw up your phone. But we put in a slider to turn it off."
