There is nothing that needs to be proved. I can only hope that Apple prevails (it probably will.)
Yes, Apple needs to prove that Lightning is better than USB if they want to keep selling iOS in the EU.

I don't think Apple needs to prove lightning port is better. But we will see. We each have our opinions. Just another day, another battle for Apple.
The EU banned lead. It will ban Lightning if it is waste.

Lead, is a problem and we all know that. Let's see them ban lightning. How long do you think it will take them to do this?
Lightning creates more e-waste.

If the EU wants to kill it, they can do it quickly.

Prove that Lightning will replace USB.
Nobody can predict the future and those who want a usb-c connector on their devices should be able to buy one. Just keep the government out of this.

It does not seem that you can prove that lightning e-waste is more than usb-c or other e-waste. Except maybe by virtue that the lightning port is present on hundreds of millions of phones and by eliminating the lightning port will cause those lightning cables to be thrown away. Seems the EU will willingly cause this massive e-waste.

USB-C is already replacing Lightning.

People have to buy more junk because of the incompatibility.

Some people have to buy more junk. I buy less junk because I have some back-up cables. But "junk" is nothing new to windows based machines for example, always have to have cables and adapters. There is always going to be junk.

There must be less junk.

Lightning is already dead.

Not according to the 100s of millions of phones that already use it. Usb-c is a solution to a problem Most don’t have.
Apple will stop making Lightning devices. It is better to stop creating junk.

I just chucked away 8....yes EIGHT bin bags full of redundant cables and power supplies from gadgets dating back 12 years. It's mainly plastic and will all go to landfill. There is nothing I can do to recycle any of it.
There is gold, copper etc in those cables. Anybody into recycling metal will gladly accept your old cables.
Even without the gold contacts, the copper is BIG money for them as it's more efficient to use your old cable than buy more ore for those making new cables ... (and copper ore prices are high).

This is the EU, I don't know where you're located but where I live (in the EU - Belgium to be more precise), it's not allowed to put old electronics and their cables in the fraction of waste that goes to a landfill. You have to turn it in separately in a recycling park (there's one or more in every town) or the one sellign you a new device _has_ to accept your old device for free to recycle it.
So, turning in any amount of e-waste is free of charge as long as you're an end-user. We all actually pay for that recycling when we buy new gear (it's a small tax that's added to any sale of gear that would end up there.) Moreover the value of the materials after the recycling is high (gold, copper, etc.) so the companies getting the "waste" see it as valuable enough to want to get it straight from you as well and even offer to carry it out of your home if you let them (no matter how heavy, how difficult, they're glad to get it).

In fact it's so valuable that e.g. the railroads or people building new homes often have to deal with thieves stealing their deployed and/or in use copper cables [even morons that get themselves electrocuted while stealing it].
So there's no reason this would ever go to a landfill unless the end-user doesn't care at all about either the (local) laws prohibiting this nor about the environment itself.

That's right. Instead Apple wants to ship computers that have a (USB-C) port you can't plug your iPhone in (comes with USB-A), and instead of giving you the adapter, sell it to you.
Good for the EU to ensure this never happens again.
Imagine if every company created its own version of the power outlet...
Ever heard of a simple cable on sale at any apple store which has USB C port on one side and lightning on another?

they even come in different lenghts ;)

Oh Europe how cute you are to think one person has all the say! I don't know how many power, RCA-3.5mm, printer USB cables, Micro-USB, USB-2, Ethernet, HDMI, Optical cables I have lying around.

Regardless of what one thinks of this law, I find the Apple statement hilarious.

We want to ensure that any new legislation will not result in the shipment of any unnecessary cables or external adaptors with every device
• Ever heard of the headphone jack removal? Also, you don't want external adaptors… what about those USB-C only Macs?
Or render obsolete the devices and accessories used by many millions of Europeans and hundreds of millions of Apple customers worldwide. This would result in an unprecedented volume of electronic waste and greatly inconvenience users
• Could you tell us more about that 30 pin connector removal please?
is better for innovation
• Lightning dates back to 2012, right? It's not like you're in a hurry to create a new port every year.

The Lightning cables will go in the garbage before USB-C cables anyway.
