Usb-c as a connector is inferior to the lightning cable and will have to be thrown away for that reason. I think what this will boil down to is dongles and adapters.
Apple will have to prove to the EU that Lightning is superior and that keeping it for some time will generate less waste.

Just buy a cable that supports everything.

It is like HDMI.
Those cables will be the most expensive, and there's no reason to do so if your computer cannot support, for example, Thunderbolt. That means that you'll definitely see all kinds of cables with all kinds of capabilities, and you won't be able to make any assumptions about what some cable you find lying around can do, at least not without some helpful markings, which many cables have.

Plus, you don't always get a choice. If you buy a new USB-C USB 3.2 gen 2 hard drive (Good lord the USB-IF really needs to hire a new marketing guy...), it won't be coming with a Thunderbolt cable. There's just no way around having a pile of USB-C cables with varying capabilities.

Yep -- and even if your computer *does* support Thunderbolt, why would you drop $50 on a TB3 two meter cable you're just using with a travel charger or powerbank or other less intensive purpose?

You’re not doing any different. This entire topic is subjective of what the EU will do. Only consists of opinions.
It does not consist of opinions. For all we know, Lightning is now waste. It is up to Apple to prove it is not.

That would be sold as a Thunderbolt cable, not a USB-C cable.

So if you just buy TB3 and top USB-C cables, there should be a bolt to tell them apart.

So we're back to having multiple cables for different purposes.

Exactly.
You don't have different accessories.

You don't buy more cables than you need.

You can also use your TB3 cables as USB-C.

You could always buy only TB3 cables if you have the money.

There's no replacement in sight for this connector.

Lightning is expected to die.

....
Your post is an opinion.

Apple doesn't have to prove Lightning is not a waste, just that it’s better in the long run than usb-c. (Which it is, IMO)

Yes, Apple needs to prove that Lightning is not waste because that is the EU's understanding and they WILL kill it.

“Superior” is subjective.
kind of true, but wouldn't Apple have to at least justify features lightning can do that USB-C cannot (if there are any cant think of any...)
then even if they could wouldnt they have to justify why they themselves use USB-C for "Superior"pro products like the iPad pro but not the "Inferior" lesser ios devices?

all that said considering the EU was originally ruling on this kind of stuff when micro-USB was the standard, i think the most likely result Apple will ignore any laws pay fines until they naturally migrate the product line that is slowly happening anyway and thats assuming laws get on the books rather than the EU bickering back and forth like they have been doing for the last decade like with micro usb

No they won't. At some point in the future, maybe there will be a standards body where everybody agrees, but the EU will not force Apple's hand. But this is the crux of it, you believe the EU can force Apple's hand, while I believe not. Opinions at play here.

Lightning is a better connector (imo) and Apple can enhance the functionality. In the vein of your thoughts, I do think if the EU tomorrow said, you couldn't sell another phone with lightning, Apple would probably give them the corporate middle finger and deal with it until they are ready. Or supply free dongles.

Please stop defending your argument and listen. As we already covered in this discussion, Thunderbolt cables are much more expensive than most other types. It does not make sense to buy those cables if you don't need them, which means that there inevitably will be many types of USB-C cables out there, and many of them are inadequately marked.

Reread the rest of the conversation if you still think your argument makes sense.

It is not an opinion. Apple is just a big company. The EU is a sovereign superstate.

You can try which of your "USB-C" cables work for a particular application. All your Lightning stuff will go in the trash before USB-C is obsolete.

If Apple will make it better than USB4 they have to show it to the EU.

This will take years to get sorted out. What you and I are bantering about is an opinion about what could happen and who has authority to do what and what will happen. Apple is not (at least in my opinion) going to change this years production to another port type. Given lighting for many is just a better option as is other port types for some others.

They have already waited for years. Now it will take months. This is not Brexit.

The EU already banned the Mac Pro before.

We’ll see. I predict years. They aren’t banning the iPhone, they’ll piss too many people off. Not to mention the loss in revenue. (IMO)
The EU is not afraid of bothering people. If they think it is the proper action, it will take months.

What loss in revenue? The EU does not collect taxes (and Apple avoids almost all of it anyway).

So now you are speaking for EU? This will take more than months.

What loss in revenue. How about VAT and taxes for the countries that sell iphones? Are you saying consumers don't pay taxes when they purchase an iphone?

What do you know about the EU to affirm that it will take more than months?

The countries will just collect taxes on Android sales instead.

Wasn’t this law mooted as far back as 2015 or 2014? Since then, Apple has not only kept lightning on the iPhone, but even expanded it to other devices like the AirPods, Apple TV remote and their wireless trackpad and mouse.

By the time this even becomes law, the world will probably be ready to move on to the next standard, or maybe Apple has dropped the charging port altogether even.

More to do with politics than technology.
Just more neo-socialist whip cracking to keep the drones in line.
The UK hasn't been democratic for decades.

How do you work that out? That's just mumbo-jumbo.

Facts:

FeatureLightningUSB-C
Max Wattage12w100w (Including USB-PD designed to end multiple laptop power cables, thus reducing cables)
Data Transmission480Mbps10Gbps (More than 20x faster)
ConnectionReversible single endedReversible double ended
Multiple Port SupportSingle device / PowerMultiple data / audio / video / power / etc.... (Including 8K video at 60Hz, plus backwards compatible with legacy standards including VGA / DVI / HDMI / USB 2.0/3.0 / etc....
ProprietaryMust be MFi certifiedNo MFi certification and therefore lower costs thus providing a catalyst to innovation.
SizeLightning wins this one. It's marginally smaller than USB-C (8 pins)It's slightly bigger than Lightning (9 pins)

If you still think Lightning is superior, read the facts again until you think otherwise.

One is flipping a few bits, the other is disenfranchising potentially 10s of millions of people.

Apple has great design and great hardware. Lightning should be standardized.

Read my table. Why standardise old, poor technology?

The only loss will be to Apple with significant fines.

And if you believe the EU can't force Apple to pay, think again: https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/17/apple-eu-in-court-over-14-billion-dollar-tax-charge.html

They famously did it with Microsoft in the IE anti-trust case. The EU market is hugely valuable for Apple and the EU commission has huge clout over any corporation. This protects consumers and it's what differentiates what I believe to be a progressive society versus a purely capitalist one which only has the corporation and shareholders at heart.

I've said it many times before. Apple has one of the most magnificent marketing machines in the world and it's basically corporate propaganda to one end. Profit. Don't get me wrong, I love the products and I too am caught up, but Apple isn't the "white heavenly light" they make themselves out to be. They want one thing. Your money; And while they make a great product, they sometimes need a bit of a kick in the nuts to keep them in line.

Lightning as a connector is better from everything I’ve read. That doesn’t mean Apple can’t up the “specs” for the same form factor.

Apple may be great at marketing, but i still don’t want usb-c on my iPhone. I vote against it and I’m not alone.

Additionally, how long has that saga with the taxes being dragged on? Years now. Which I said is how long this will drag on for.

This isn’t as complex as taxes, so it won’t drag on long. Say goodbye to lightning :)

It’s been emotional!
