But each protocol change requires new cables. 20 gig, 40 gig, how much power 50w or 100w, usb 3 or tb 3, etc its really a confusing tangle. And aren’t some incompatible even if they fit? Like if its a TB3 cable, but the chipset on the computer is only usb 3? Is it 3? 3.1? 3.2? 3.2x2?The port itself hasn’t changed since its inception. Don’t confuse USB protocols with the port. The port has gained new versions of the USB protocol, as well as some other protocols, but the port itself is the same. That’s USB-C’s strength, the ability to evolve as industry needs change.
Those aged “wasted resources” are going to sit in your shoe cartons whether they stay with lightning or go to usb c...I have about 3 shoe cartons full of cables from all different kind of devices, that will never be used again, but came with the product. Multiply that by probably a billion people and you have a lot of wasted resources.
Funny how Apple wasn't so concerned for the environment when they shifted from 30-pin to Lightning. Just switch to USB-C and be done with it.
That was the idea and everyone did that. Except one manufacturer that ironically promoted the port as the total solution in desktops and their high end tablet, yet sticks with a propreitary connector on their phones and other tablets.Um, does everyone understand that computer makers already do this with data ports?
USB is an example of a consortium which creates a standard for everyone to adopt. When the standard is revised/improved, everyone adopts the new standard.
I'm surprised you're the first person to mention this. I plug my iphones multiple times a day and they stay tight and snug. My macbooks, which I only plug in 2-3 times per week, that have USB C (esp the 12" rMBP that only has one port - thanks Apple!) are super loose now and I have tried multiple cables. The port just wears out much faster than lightning.USB-C port/connector becomes loose and mushy in a year but lighting port is firm and tight.
What a waste of law making energy. Im guessing the European Parliament has nothing better to do if they are making laws like this.
Then what’s your explanation for the massive turnover in Android devices? To be fair, not having the latest OS does not make a device obsolete. It’s not like a phone stops working because it doesn’t have Android 10. In fact, some people want to stay on older versions because they believe that updates are designed to slow down their phone.
More than 1 billion Apple devices have shipped using a Lightning connector in addition to an entire ecosystem of accessory and device manufacturers who use Lightning to serve our collective customers. We want to ensure that any new legislation will not result in the shipment of any unnecessary cables or external adaptors with every device, or render obsolete the devices and accessories used by many millions of Europeans and hundreds of millions of Apple customers worldwide. This would result in an unprecedented volume of electronic waste and greatly inconvenience users. To be forced to disrupt this huge market of customers will have consequences far beyond the stated aims of the Commission.
This is a VERY bad idea. How do we ever move beyond USB C if the entire industry has to move at the same time?? USB C isn't the best port that will ever be invented.
Nothing happened to those products. You've heard about Amazon, EBay, Newegg, Walmart, etc.?
Imagine if every company created its own version of the power outlet...
Apple should put Lightning to rest already and move to USB-C. They already have on iPads and Macs, why is the phone the odd one out? Enough already, Apple! I won't even mind having to buy new cables because it'll probably be the last time.
