Umm the iPhone 11 Pros come with a Lightning to USB-C cable in the box, along with an 18W quick charger that is USB-C. The 11 doesn’t, but that’s because it’s their “budget” phone. The newest iPad Pro come with the same 18W charger and a USB-C to USB-C cable.

I think you need your memory refreshed. Apple first introduced USB-C on Mac in 2015, on the MacBook (a non-pro computer). That means from 2015-2019 (4 years), regular people had to buy an adapter to be able to plug their iPhone to their computers.
Most of them still have to because like you pointed out, only the iPhone Pros come with USB-C cable. The argument that the regular iPhone 11 doesn't come with USB-C because it's a "budget phone" reinforces my argument that the EU needs this law. Why is Apple selling "budget" Macs (base MacBook Air for example) with USB-C but then decides that "budget" phones can't be plugged out of the box to their computers?
Stop justifying gross late stage capitalism.

Then apple should kick progress in the ass and create a superior connector, a flush, sealed data/power interface, with magnetic clasp, capable of & future-proofable for further advances in fast charging & high speed data transfers. I mean if fiber is off the table, then take this:

smart-connector-apple-ipad-pro-iphone-2017-caracteristicas-tecnicas.jpg

...spend the budget of a TV show episode on it and iterate the hell out of it. Then license it to everyone on earth for a penny a pop.

... good?

The lightening connector is inferior to the USB-C connector, and the iPad Pro’s have already transitioned so... 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Do you really see Apple wanting to bundle in a wireless charger in with every iPhone?

That would be the best if apples answer was no port at all :) Id laugh so hard

presumably more cables being produced and ultimately ending up in landfills, as without a standard people will need different chargers for different devices?

For instance, I use just one charger for my iPhone and iPad since their both lightning. If I had an Android phone I would need to carry to different chargers. I don’t know how much waste that actually produces, but I understand wanting to streamline things.

Personally, I’m fine with lightning, but if the switch is going to happen eventually, Apple might as well just pull off the bandaid, unless they really are just bidding time until they go totally port-less.

yay for portless

Not at all a fan of this EU move. Generally like Lightening better than USB - so easy to plug in. USB seems frail, but it has passed some impressive durability lifetime tests so that likely just a perception issue. Still one worries about breaking the inner tab. Never jam it in is my motto. However, key issue with lightening is the flexible components that connect with the tab are inside the device. When (not if has been my experience for high-volume use) those components start to wear, the connection is hopeless. Same happens with USB, but it just means a new cable is needed. Not going to affect most users, but some iPads are in enviros where the plug gets inserted a lot each day (e.g. to confirm connection to a secure input system). Those will have failed lightening ports which means a new iPad rather than a new cable.

You are right, politicians love to control people since they think that people are too stupid to make decisions for themselves. It gives them power to extract money from the people being controlled and the companies they are controlling, a win-win for the politicians, a lose-lose for liberty.

People are too stupid to make decisions themselves. That’s why we have laws and regulations. And building codes. And specs. And a functional society.

Just move to usb-c. And call it a day. USB-pd already supports upto 100 W of charging, Macs already come with thunderbolt 3 (usb-c), and the iPad Pro comes with usb-c. So what’s the purpose of not integrating usb-c on the iPhone? Other than of course to make money with their proprietary usb to lightning cables that break easily.

If the rumors are accurate and Apple eliminates the charging port completely in 2021, will all other smart phone makers have to eliminate their ports? This is a "solution" in search of a problem.

Good for the short term, bad for the long term.

Wrong way round.

We're more than capable of having unified standards through coalitions - see Bluetooth.

Excellent move by the EU. Absolutely scandalous how much waste there is in tech and how wrong-headed consumers are about it all.

This is the sort of half effort that makes me disappointed in politicians. If two standards is waste - than two totally different phone lines is crazy waste. And there are, what 20? They should just make an EU phone by law that can only be used in the EU. Every ten years they can have a committee to revise and make changes to update to what other countries might be doing. The incredible waste from so many phone options is destroying the world. Don't stop at using the law for standardizing interfaces. Standardize everything by law!

Come on Apple. Nobody wants Lightning except you, since you are cashing in on the royalties and exclusivity. We want standard-compliant connectors. I am losing track of all the crappy cables I have to carry around. I already moved everything to USB-C, the only stuff that is still different is Lightning...

Yes, we all would like USB-C, but when it's successor comes out, adoption will be slow because of all the government red tape put in place.

You mean like how industry is usually great at adopting new superior protocols *looks at all the computers with USB-A ports and monitors with DVI connectors*?

By the way, the successor is already there and guess which connector it is using. And USB-C is there to stay for another decade or so, since it is the most forward-thinking connector ever designed.

I honestly agree. I think Apple should change the lightning port to a USB-C like the iPad Pro. The lightning port had its use, it worked well, but its time to move on.

What about the millions of products that shipped with the 30 pin connector Tim? What happened to those products? Apple doesn’t even sell the 30 pin to lightning adapters anymore.

Nothing happened to those products. You've heard about Amazon, EBay, Newegg, Walmart, etc.?

After reading this carefully:

The proposed charging ports for portable devices include Micro-USB, USB-C, and the Lightning connector.

This whole article seems to say that manufacturer should use one _of several_ standardised ports. For example Micro-USB, USB-C, and Lightning. So if I understand this right, you would be in trouble if you wanted a port other than these three (like Apple reviving the 30 pin adapter, or Samsung using USB that isn't Micro-USB or USB-C), but you would be free to choose any of these three.

It's funny to see how Apple doesn't like it when USB-C is forced onto them when Apple has been forcing USB-C onto their DongleBook Pro customers for years.

But I don't see how USB-C being used on all phones would be a bad thing. One charging cable for everyone. If you forgot yours, chances are someone can lend you theirs and it will always be compatible. And you can now use a standard USB-C to USB-C cable to sync your phone to your computer. Also, USB-C accessories could become a standardized thing for all phones. And USB-C headphones. Now if you buy Lightning headphones they will not work with anything other than an iPhone, making them kind of pointless.

Great Apple, now is your time to switch to USB-C and it gives your the perfect excuse when all the users come crying about the new port you can blame it on regulatory pressure.

And then the EU will back off and the industry won't be locked into including a USB-C port on their devices forever.

Everyone voting for USB Type C (aka USB-C) seem to forget what "USB" stands for... "Universal", and it's been everything but that.

USB-A
USB-B
Micro-USB
etc, etc...

Apple sees this and provided they're customers with ONE port/connector for many years across many devices, and then another ONE since transitioning to Lightning.

Until USB is truly universal for everyone, it won't be the ultimate connector. There's too much money to be made by the industry changing connectors. Yes, there will be something new after USB-C.

We should be thankful for Apple's wisdom in how they handled this.

I hope they vote for it and to enforce it. To not enforce it, but vote for it would be nothing but a joke. Lightning & other Apple-Crap connectors need to die already.

Yeah, maybe Apple's comment of "bad for the environment" should be juxtaposed with a landfill shot of all the 30 pin cords they rendered obsolete.

Nobody in the mobile phone business gets many points for environmentalism, but singling out Apple for daring to change the connector twice in 20 years is a bit ridiculous.

Apple stuck with the same 30 pin connector on all of its mobile devices for 10 years - then they stuck with lightning for 5-6 years (and counting) - plus, for most of that time, their power adapters have had standard USB-A sockets rather than captive cables. I've frequently used Apple PSUs to charge other devices and none of my "old" adapters are headed for landfill anytime soon.

The EU rules on this have been misguided and broken by focussing on the connector on the phone rather than the design of the PSU. Just require chargers to have interchangeable cables (pretty much universal now anyway, Apple were one of the first to do this).

Better: ban the bundling of power supplies with new phones, to encourage people to re-use old ones and/or buy universal ones that can be re-used in the future.

Whatever works to get rid of proprietary connectivity, I'm for it.

Work together, dang it.

Apple is gonna troll everyone when they go portless, though. They have the self-proclaimed "courage".

It'll be interesting to see the wireless charging dongle for your car, etc. start appearing in the market, (if not there already, I haven't looked).

Apple LOVES to jump ahead of the world and then sell you what you need to connect to it. At a premium, no less.
