It's not technically an outdoor camera.
Eufy offer outdoor cameras and I’ve got 2. Overall for the price I think they’re decent but they can be buggy. My 2 have been intermittently missing activity this week, yet the exact same activities show up in HomeKit secure video.Anker / Eufy has shown that they can make an indoor HomeKit Secure Video camera and sell it for under $40. ($38 on Amazon in the US as of this post.)
Are these outdoor housings really that expensive?
I may be wrong but I don't think you can do video over thread, it needs WiFi.Nothing about thread.
1080p is plenty for the distance the floodlight can illuminate, most likely. This whole backup concept when you're recording directly to datacenters in all corners of the country is borderline useless. Apple will likely up the resolution in the future, not sure if this will be futureproof for that. But, I'm dropping my Eufy solution that has a "2k" backup in a heartbeat for this. What good is a direct secure connection if the resolution is too poor the be useful? They could still encrypt the backups. Make the low-resolution 'live feed' work as it's currently implemented, but add a higher-resolution capture for the backups. 1080p backups are borderline useless.
Getting rid of Eufy for this. Their implementation has way too many points of failure and the requirement of that stupid base unit is just dumb. This was so they could use RF cameras instead of wifi to get around Apple's requirements.I'll stick with Eufy.
Yes, and that is a bummer. On their site they recommend replacing an existing exterior light with this camera so that you have the wiring available. That is going to be a barrier to many people to adopt this.I think looking at the specs correctly... this thing runs on AC power?
1080p is not sufficient. You can’t capture a license plate, a packing label, or read an ID or name tag of someone walking around the house.1080p is plenty for the distance the floodlight can illuminate, most likely. It's an indoor/outdoor camera. Why of course it is. The Circle View has a better dust ingress rating than this Eve camera, and only one notch below the Eve in water ingress rating. Just because the Circle View has a power cord, that doesn't make it "not an outdoor camera".
Opaqueness can also scatter the light so it's more consistent, which is likely what is being done here.
How long have 1080p security cameras been in use? Pretty sure they've been sufficient. 4k is a nice to have but then, what you're really asking for here would cost a hell of a lot more than you think it would.1080p is not sufficient. What does something having been used have to do with being sufficient? Low resolution video evidence has been a problem for decades, it wasn’t sufficient it was merely available. 4K cameras don’t cost much anymore. And storage is cheap. You're going to have to take it up with the lighting industry. There are thousands of "opaque" light bulbs. They cause refraction to scatter light rather than let it pass through directly.Sorry to be pedantic in this thread, but that's NOT what opaque means (at least in English). You've mistaken translucent for opaque, which is what the original writer has also done.

This is a floodlight camera, intended to be pointed downward, I'm not sure what distance you think that requires that you won't be able to read a license plate at 1080p. It's sufficient, and those 1080p cameras in the past were "sufficient". Security cameras are permanent installs. Why would you ever install one that uses batteries? They need to 'just work' for years until the one time you need them.
You don't need any subscription but Apple's own storage plan. It's quite expensive for needing a subscription as well to be fully exploited.
Yep, they spelled "translucent" wrong. That must be an inefficient light, since "opaque" means little or no light can pass through it.
Yep, saw that and thought, uh, my EufyCam went online in the last days of The Before Times, a couple years ago - does that not count?Pretty sure I have two eufycam’s that are outside and have HomeKit secure video…
Your justification for it not being good is that it isn’t intended to be good? This is a floodlight camera, intended to be pointed downward, I'm not sure what distance you think that requires that you won't be able to read a license plate at 1080p. It's sufficient, and those 1080p cameras in the past were "sufficient". If you want professional security, you're not going to buy it in a box at best buy and have it set up in minutes.
If you want a homekit camera that does more than 1080p, you have two choices...and they both suck. It's more likely you will have no video at all than a useful 2k backup.
As far as costs go, you can either have a smart camera or you can have a good camera. If you want both immediately, think around $500 if anyone makes it. If I was expecting an active shooter to be picked up by my camera 700 feet down the road, I'd go for something like Ubiquiti. But if I want motion detection, a flood light, and smart home integration, no options out there work without customization or way more money. I just checked my current 1080p camera and I can read the license plate across the street in my neighbor's driveway, which is plenty for my property.
It sounds like this product isn't for you, but it's certainly "sufficient".
