Side-loading is something that is not allowed by default by the OS. There are no default restrictions for installing this game on macOS. If the app is signed/verified by Apple and not flagged, it's not side-loading. Side-loading would be jumping through security hoops and ignoring Apple's warnings not to install the questionable app.
I thought this, too. But when I googled it, apparently if a store EXISTS, but a customer does not use that store, then it could be considered side-loading. If the Mac App Store didn’t exist, it wouldn’t be side-loading… it’d just be loading. But, because it DOES exist, it’s side-loading. Even if the actual actions required to side-load are relatively simple compared to, say, and Xbox or an iPhone.

Doesn't Microsoft also constantly upgrade their DX APIs?

IMHO, developer goes where there's money to be made.
Yes, but older versions are still working and gaming is pretty much still X86. This means 20 year old games usually work fine on windows while they’re not playable on macOS anymore.
developers can’t be expected to adopt to every API change for decades.

If you buy a game for PC you can be pretty sure you can use it for a long time. If you buy it for macOS, it might be obsolete in a month. I bought great games in the Mac App Store (!) that were not supported anymore not even a year later when apple transitioned from 32 bit to 64 bit only.

So in other words you wouldn't recommend Eve Online?

Nah.

It’s one of those games you have to join a community and build an alliance. It takes a long time and you can become exposed to lunatics and scammers.

Proceed with caution. The MMO has always been a mess and it is even worse these days because scammers have discovered better financial and psychological vulnerabilities.

I played Eve for years and really got into it. Those PvP tournaments were amazing. My friend and I were high sec ice miners selling to pos. In between our mining bouts we’d explore low sec space and take on pirates here and there. Eventually we left for World of Warcraft but I’ll never forget those massive Band of Brothers and Goonswarm wars. I miss the collaboration of Eve. Wow was too much instant gratification and repetition. I tried Eve recently and was sad to see they got rid of high sec ice. :(.

These games are extremely addictive and I gave both way too many years of my life. Now I’m married and find reading books and spending time with people in person to be far more of a valuable use of time. I dont necessarily condemn those years as there are far worse things to do with one‘s time. Wow was a great way to spend time with my then very remote girlfriend whom I am now married to. :)
