not sure what nilsec is, i think you mean nullsec... null is actually an english word for none/zero. *shakes head* lol... the sec means security, so nullsec = zerosecurity.

anyways, in eve there is lots and lots of ways to make isk (eve currency) or you can pay 19$ and buy a plex and sell it for in game currency and buying a plex in game pays for the subscription.

depending on what you do, you can make anywhere from 0 to 150 million isk per hour (some people make even more than that), and a plex is around 820 mil right now... the eve market resembles real life markets, it fluctuates as time passes... a year or so plex was only 500 mil. so if you make 150 million per hour, you can pay for your sub in 5 hours of playtime.

in eve, there is highsec, lowsec and nullsec. in highsec you are safer than anywhere else in eve, however can still be killed... depending on what you do once again, you might never be shot dead if you stay in highsec ( i have a 2 year old alt which never has been shot down since it stays in highsec ).

in high sec there is trade hubs, there is 4 big hubs and one of them is the biggest called Jita... if you stay in a jita station, you never have to exist the station and simply trade all day (like play the auction house in wow). this can lead to more than 150 mil per hour easily. if you run your own big corporation you'd make billions per hour.

solo afk mining in high sec gets you about 6-11 mil an hour... doing level 4 missions (questing) gets you more than that. if you want to do incursions (which are similar to raids) you could be making more than 100 mil in a short amount of time, i'm not sure how much but everyone in eve says it's a lot.

in eve, there is ships that cost literally less than 10k isk, 10k isk is how much you get in a level 1 mission... and there is ships that cost 100 billion, which are titans fully decked out.

however titans have a hard time shooting down small ships, every type of ship has its role... so a bigger ship doesn't mean its any better than the cheapest ship in the game. eve players consider ship types as classes in other games.

insurance doesn't do much, if you buy/craft a 200 mil ship, insurance will only cover like 20 mil or something ridiculous. so if you suck at making some isk, what most people do is make 1 account which mines and another account for pvp... they spend their mining isk for the cost of their pvp account.

you don't ever have to go to nullsec if you don't want to, but its where you'll make the most money except for trading.

the reason there is a 15$ fee is because there is no micro transactions whatsoever besides clothing for your character, no one cares about that since you currently only see the portrait of a character. also the expansions used to come twice a year (warcraft expansion costs 50-60$) but eve gave two for free a year, plus eve improves graphics on a regular basis. now eve gets 10 small expansions a year... for only 15$ a month or 820 mil isk.

if you pay annually, eve is only 10$ a month. in elite dangerous, you will have to pay for expansions, the devs already mentioned this.

the reason other mmo's are "free to play" is because you need to pay for mounts, gear, more bag/bank slots, more character slots, xp potions and the list goes on, when you play a 'free to play' game, you realize it isn't free and costs more than a monthly sub if you want to experience the best content and also be the best.

so your anti 15$ a month dilemma is rather kind of sad in my opinion. maybe you don't see the benefit because elite and star citizen don't have fees, but you will pay for expansions and 1 ship in star citizen can cost more than 100$ currently. you also have to realize those 2 games really aren't mmo's and lack a lot of mmo features.

so that's the argument. i myself find elite dangerous as a cool singleplayer game and no man's sky, however i prefer mmo genre, i like to play with others. once AI gets smart enough to replicate a human, i might go back to those games.

Yea, "nullsec", lol. Thanks for your perspective! :)

As someone said, you've basically described a "lifestyle" more than a game. Trading bores me and I don't see it as an end and a continually fulfilling activity. It's sounds like much time must be devoted to supporting your 200m ship. Don't get the wrong impression, I'm not selling ED over Eve in this regard. I'm questioning ED too. The key is how casual are these games? How long will I stick with ED? Unknown.

So far, it seems that I can jump into ED, have some fun, in 4 months I will break even regarding the purchase ($60), and then get the rest of the year free. ;)

I pretty much skipped funding for that game when he went full retard on his comments about the Mac. Really dude, Macs have been fine since they went Intel.

Watched an early trailer, seemed to be really setting down a marker as a "pro-PC" game, almost as a political statement.

Still, it looks amazing, particularly the Imagine trailer. The ships look amazing, the in-craft images look amazing, the in-craft views look amazing, the on-foot images look amazing.. Makes me deeply suspicious the gameplay will be very shallow :) Seriously though, it's hard to get a handle on what the game will actually be like, when you see on-foot combat, on-planet excursions, on-station etc.

I forget, are you dabbling with ED?

how exactly do you calculate your times "worth"? are you saying 60/15 = 4 months?

you think a month worth of entertainment is only worth 15$? are you some kind of ethiopian? lol, you're on a mac forum and you think 15$ a month is borderline rip off for a whole month of entertainment.

you seriously have a odd brain, a movie is 10$ 2 hours, tv is 80$+ if you want all channels +hbo, mobile phone is 80$+, restaurant is 20$-60$ for 30min. a sports ticket is anywhere between 20$-100$+ for 2.5 hours, a concert is usually around 35-60$ unless its some rip off pop band 2 hours... like what the hell dude seriously? and the list goes on.

singleplayer games which last 8 hours or so go anywhere from 39$-69$

i question your sanity.

I've subscribed to several MMOs, even continue to today, with two subscriptions currently. Last thing I need is another. If my subscription comment really upsets you, just go about your business and ignore me. You're not secretly irritated I'm not in love with Eve are you? :p Everything is relative. I pay game subscriptions when I think something is worth it, but I don't like them, and I have a right not to like them if I don't want to, whether you think I should like them or not, even if you think they are the greatest bargain in the world, lol.

Not yet, waiting on the Mac version. I do have a Warthog HOTAS control set on order so I'm ready to go! :)

Playing the X3 games to bide the time until ED Mac comes out - the X3 games were recently updated (after 8 years hiatus!) so I'm giving them a go again.

As has been stated, ED does function more like a coop or solo game, than a 1000 players on one server, MMO.
